I finally got a chance to go down there last night. Same as always, ACTION! ACTION! ACTION! I walk in and see Shane battling Francisco and other tournament players (already eliminated) playing on other tables. Django beat Shane for 35,000p (under $1,000) 16-12 playing Ten Ball. Then Shane matched up with Ronnie Alcano, same game. I get hustled to bet on the side, so I take Shane for 4,000p (less than $100). He wins this one 16-11. They tell me Shane has been in action here every night. Our most fearless American player! He is playing all the big boys on their home turf.

Manny Paquiao comes in and immediately gets into a chess match with Corey! Yes, you heard me right, Corey and Manny P. playing CHESS! No punches are thrown and Manny wins. I find out that Manny blew 80,000p to an European player two nights ago, so we try to get Manny to play Dr. Jonni Fulcher for 100,000p but too many railbirds get in Manny's ear and he finally declines the game. Too bad, it's pocket change for Manny but MONEY to us! Manny starts practicing on "his" table that has had a reserved sign on it all night. He hits the balls good and has a nice filipino stroke. Last time I saw him play he was betting $10,000 a set with some mob guy from Japan. They played all night and Manny got the cheese. He could be a good pool player if he didn't spend so much time boxing.

I invited Manny to come to the pool tournament tomorrow and sit in the booth with us. He said he would try, so I have no big hopes. He loves pool but he would be mobbed in public. Even in the poolroom people are constantly asking him for his autograph or to pose for pictures. Super nice guy, always says yes. He has two well armed body guards hovering nearby at all times. Up close Manny is well muscled and a very trim athlete, maybe 5'7" or 8". You can see the ripples in his arms when he gets down to shoot. Not surprisingly, he does have a powerful stroke.

P.S. I also asked him about the recent Manny Paquiao Open held recently at Hard Times. Did he even know about it and he said yes he did. That made me feel a little better about the promoters. Yes, Efren was there as well, holding court and getting involved in all the action, taking a piece. He is right in the middle of things. Alex is a no show this year. I am told he is a full time poker player now, playing in all the big games nightly. He supposedly won 2,500,000p (about $55,000) in the last two weeks. But before that he was nearly broke. A gambler's life, c'est la vie!

Awesome Jay... Every time Francisco and Shane play, it could be a different score. It just comes down to the variables at that level. What a treat!

Good for him. He is definitely in the elite of the world. It doesn't matter if he wins or loses overall during this trip. He is the only guy that will even go there and play all comers.

got to be on the Scene

Thanks Jay, you really captured the flow of the action. I think people outside of the pool world have no concept of how it goes outside a major tournament and the Philippines has definitely made itself the world capitol of pool. The are the big boys and Pacman on the scene is fantastic. As Cuaba said I will definitely be there next year. My home base is Bangkok and its not too far to go.

Holy Cow Jay!!!!

This sounds like one crazy ass Hollywood movie,

U got Shane the lonely gunslinger going into a town and shooting it out with the locals, fearless.

The hottest boxer in the world first playing chess with a professional pool player, playing pool with a real life Japanese Yakuza. Can you imagine all the guys with guns under thier coats on both sides??

Then you guys trying to get him in the box with a world class physicist!!! Can you imagine that guy going back to work and telling his fellow scientists that oh yeah I went to the Philippines played in a tournament where I could have been a world champion and oh by the way I almost played Manny Pacquiao chess for money!!!!!

Then you got Efren mixing it up and Alex nowhere to be found but on the poker table loosing and winning his shirt like in the movie Rounders!!!!

I always love your posts Jay, this one really captured my imagination. I think I'm gonna try and print your post out in color and frame it. These are the kinds of stories that you tell your grandkids and they don't believe it.

Thanks a lot!

Brandon

Sad to hear that Alex is not playing pool much anymore. One of my favorite players ever.

I was thinking the same thing. I have always been fond of Alex Pagulayan. :)

I realize, though, that Alex has accomplished it all in pool. He has won the World Pool Championship, U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship, and many, many other titles.

Though I don't think he will leave pool permanently, I do think that maybe the lure of gambling in poker is comfortable. It sure is cheaper and easier to play poker than pool, and the opportunity to win BIG is much better in poker than pool. I wish that wasn't so, but it's true.

That said, you can take Alex out of the pool world, but I don't think you will EVER take the pool out of Alex's heart. He's a thoroughbred pool player, through and through, first and foremost. He'll be back!

Alex I'm pretty sure is still playing pool. I don't know the reason why the Puyat Boys (Efren, Bustamante and Pagulayan) are not in this tourney.

That is an interesting observation, one I had not thought of.

It might have something to do with the qualification rules set out by the WPA, but I'm not sure. Do they have to compete in a certain amount of WPA events to be qualified?

I seem to recall reading something on this forum that non-attendance at some events can affect one's eligibility for future events, but I may not be wording this correctly.

According to the news, the differences between Mr. Makabenta and Mr. Puyat have not been settled yet hence their absence. Mr. Mariano and Mr. Makabenta had some approved agreement before the tourney, the reason why his players played.
