A Rare find (Sailor Cue & Case)

Sailor cues have been made by Frank "Sailor" Stellman of Racine Wi. I havn't talked to him in a month or so but last we talked he wasn't looking to make any more cues.
He's had some health issues and has problems standing for any length of time.

Frank has been an excellent player who loves straight pool and has devoted his life to pool. He was a teacher to Jeff Carter and Mark Wilson as well as many other people. He's considered a stern but excellent teacher by most of his students, and he is a genuine pool room character with many sayings that are unique to him.

I consider him a friend.
Jim: I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded good. He and Lee and Pete and "New York" were heading to Waukesha to check out a new pool hall. He said he has been working again. he's got 2 of my"Sailors" and a John Davis blank and insists that he wants to refinish the two and make me a cue with the blank.

He was down at Red Shoes about a month ago and will probably be back for the 14.1 qualifier at the end of May.

Someone just told me about this thread at the IBC tonight,
Nice pickup.

Thanks Dennis! Glad to hear Sailor is ok. I get concerned about him and need to call him more often.

Life is tenuous and needs attention so the love gets spread where it needs to go.

Give him a big... handshake for me if you see him. (hugs probably wouldn't work with Sailor :) )

Is this cue still for sale?.. well, yes and no. I bought it, I've got it and the case and I'll sell them. PM me if interested.

Hi Jim! Betcha that Sailor cue & case won't sell for less than the grand you paid FOUR YEARS AGO! LOL I can't believe you have all those Sailors. I never even saw them when I was at your house all those years ago with Chris Cass! Hope you're doing well!

Jim,

I don't knows if this was brought up, but the case looks like an original Jay Flowers. There might be a stamp under the handle.

Chris

edit - oops, just realized I said the same thing 3 years ago...

Hi Scott! I didn't have the Sailors then! It was a couple years after you were here that I got turned on to Sailors and now have what I believe to be the largest collection on the planet.. about 25 of them.

Chris.. the case is definitely an original Flowers... in beautiful condition. You're permitted to forget what you said 3 yrs ago :groucho:

he hit the nail on the head

I have a collection of Sailor cues.. 12 of them. They don't go for much money. Most sell on ebay for less than $500. The case is ok but with the guys name on it loses it's value as a playing case and it's not a collectors item.

You say it's ivory. What parts are ivory? Sailor used mostly plastic of different sorts. His trademark was the flared butt.... Sailor cues.. the cues with a flare!

The cue looks good but you don't mention if it has any defects or rolls straight?

Usually his cues just don't go for that much. PM sent.

You could pm dmgwalsh on az. He has a couple Sailors and is a friend of Sailors, as am I. Maybe he could help find a marketable price for the cue. I'm interested in buying it if we can find an agreeable price.

Regards, Jim
My mentor played with one, but they just don't bring in much money. A guy named little Joe from Eat Chicago Indiana turned me on to these, and he was on the road with Jeff Carter in the 80s. These cues have a small but faithfull following here in Chicago seeing they were maid just over t the Wisconsin Illinois border.

I just lucked into a 1x2 J.E.F Q Case as well. Was lucky to be on the WFS at the right time to snap it up. Now I think I can stop buying cases.

I'll probably be stuck a lot of $$ as they don't command much in the market. I bought mine because I like Sailor cues. I like the look and they play as good as any... imo. Plus, I like Sailor! He's old school pool... "no nonchalantin at the pool table"!!

I'll try posting some photo's...

I can't remember how! :sorry:

I have known Sailor for over 60 years. He is not a (real jerk) though he is
a bit different in some respects. Unfortunately he has mis-treated some customers through inattention, not through any deliberate attempt to cheat anyone. I have about 8 of his cues plus I bought one for each of my 3 sons.

Sailor is currently in the V.A. hospital in Waukegan, Il, and is not doing real well. He was a heck of a player in his day though he did not compete in many major tournaments.

The last two of his cues that I bought were cues that were commissioned for a good friend of mine and his son, at my direction, by my friends wife. The friend and son are both dead and the widow sold them to me for $100.00. I don't think I cheated her. They are in very poor shape. They are signed however and are not for sale.

Sailor

I agree completely with the post by Dave Nelson, Frank is no jerk and is a pleasure to hang out with. I met him through Dennis Walsh here at AZ and consider myself lucky for the experience. I spoke with him about a month ago at Red Shoes and he looked pretty good then, I am very sorry to hear he's back in the hospital. Wish him well and a speedy recovery.
