About Grady Mathews

Those books are out of print and didn't have that many copies printed to start with. It's a demand/availability issue. As long as the price holds up, you can recover most or all of what you pay for them.

It seems that the remaining stock of Grady's book, which was being sold through his room, is gone.

I was paying $14.95 dealer cost for a book. Been out of print and when the biggest supplier of the book sold out the price jumped a wee bit. Last I knew it was selling for $150 used. I gave a dozen copies away over the years!

I talked to a friend of a friend who had written a couple dozen how to books. Some sold better than others but most had a pretty steady market. He was getting old so he built a midsized warehouse behind his house and stocked it with his books. He said when he died that was what he was leaving for an inheritance instead of cash. Interesting concept, I think it worked. Some of his books were the best in the field.

Grady was one of the smartest, sharp witted and humorous players I have seen. Only met him once during a 90s Joss event at Country Club USA, but the whole day when we would run into to each other he would talk to me like we have been friends for decades, saying things in quiet tones just to me about what he was thinking of like we were sharing an inside joke.

That’s exactly how he was every day of his life.
He was good people.

Lots of pool and lots of Grady's sexual conquests...
I have the book. When I first received it, it was a fun read, but because of my background, I immediately noticed lots of spelling and punctuation boo-boos. I mentioned it to Grady, and he said he ran out of time before having to publish it. Nobody will probably notice those things except me, and actually, it kind of gives it a certain charm. Like he was in gambling, he did it all by himself, with no outside help. Gotta admire that. :)

I have a personally autographed copy. It's a great book for being written by a Professional Pool Player. Lots of great pool stories, and definitely Spicey as well. Grady was an American original.

Did you ever read Buddy's biograph written by W.W. Woody.....whewww....that one is a doozy. I would like to try and find another copy and attempt to read it again. I like Jay Helfert's books and Danny D's as well.

I have a copy of that, and wanted to send it off to get it made into a .pdf file with normal sized text. In its current form it is almost unreadable, even with readers on.

Didn't know the ramifications of having a new book made off of the old one, especially if I wasn't selling them. Haven't been able to find anyone who knows what WW or Buddy's thoughts were.

It would be really nice if someone could get the copyrights from the estates or copyrights holders to Grady’s book and Buddy’s book. I haven’t read either one. But an edited edition in decent paperback for less than $25 or $30 would get more copies sold. Publishing has never been easier. I admit I haven’t done it, but if the rights could be obtained and someone with any editing ability could clean them up it would be great. Don’t know if the rights could be acquired.

Let me summarize : If ifs ands and buts we're candies and nuts we would all have a great christmas.

I heard tell of a lady that was going to write a book about one of the great old time players. She got it written, polished to I suspect over 99% perfection. She got hung up on where to hang a comma or where not to, or something. One of those things, a great book that may never be published because of an endless search for perfection! Perhaps a search for perfection in other areas too, that I honestly don't know!

I remember they hung the last perfect person up on a cross. I don't think I have much worry in that area but can't be too careful! I stay well away from perfect. Take care of yourself and what's his name ma'am, and get that book out for all of our sakes!

Yeah, we are pool players - not literary critics. We just want the down and dirty story. Get those books out!
