Advice for this 9-ball shot?

Good thread. This is one of those shots that if either ball was over a little, it wouldn't really be a problem, but where it is really sucks. The cut in the side is possible. But, then you have to avoid the scratch in the corner too.

Playing safe is always an option here, and possibly even the "right" thing to do. I tend to look at it a little differently though. I'm on the 9, have a chance to win the game, I sure as can be don't want to be playing safe with it! If I do, and he makes the ball, I'll be kicking myself for not going for it myself. I'm going all out for the cross corner bank. No question about it. If I miss the bank, well, I guess I better start practicing that and similar shots. You miss is, you deserve to lose. Giving him a bank when I was too scared to shoot one, and then watching him drain it just makes me sick inside and really kills the confidence factor.

Sometimes on a very similar shot, you can really juice up the outside english and hit the ball a lot fuller. The english will throw the ob to the correct line. Then, with a smooth slow follow shot, you can avoid the scratch. This particular set up, that option is not there.

I agree Neil....my first thought after seeing the layout was WTF? Bank the ball in the corner?

Problem with the cut is as diagramed its a scratch in the corner.

That cut in the side is a "CLIP" shot........Clip shots are awesome and probably my favorite type of shot thats not something crazy.

Cool thing about them is the CB's trajectory and travel is not affected nearly as much on these type of shots b/c your just feathering edges and the CB basically retains almost all its momentum, giving only a small quantity of it to the OB........that and its hard to swing them left or right with english without rail contact.

When you got open lanes to go up and down and side to side Clip shots are great.....if you have to aviod something thats in close proximity to that tangent then its going to be pretty difficult unless you jack up....but then try and control a clip that fine jacked up with english lol. Good luck with that.

bank on everyone,

The safest shot to shoot on this is to hit the 9 ball with controlled speed right before the diamond on the side. Cue the cueball a little bit above center. The 9 Ball should float down to the end rail near teh first diamond past the corner and the rock should rest right past the side near the diamond.

If yoru opponent cuts the 9 ball in from there then tell him or her congrats because it was a hell of shot!!

Oh forgot to ask is this on a bar table or 8' or 9'?? This type of safe is a little more delicate on a bar box

I'm going with Tate's options. Of the three he diagrammed I like one and two the best because both leave a lot of separation between the two balls. His first options is the easier one to execute.

The choice to bank the ball cross corner is gutsy and has cost me more games in the long run. When the cheese is on the line I'm waiting for a higher percentage shot. Even a 60-40 percentage shot is not good enough for me. Not too many shots can get much worse than where you're at now. Patience.

I hope you like them because those are a couple that you showed me!

If the balls are set up just like that in the diagram then just cut it right in the side. A lot of left spin will throw that right in.

Thats the shot, hit it thin, light and with a lot of left and trow it it. That changes the tagent line from the scratch.

Anouther possability is jack up about 30 degrees hit 1 tip below center, using center ball and will give it a small jump and change the tagent line again to avoid the scratch.

back cut into the side pocket looking at the diagram. You have to hit it thin, but if the ball is just as it is in the diagram, thin cut will make the ball and avoid the scratch. Hit it too full and you miss and maybe scratch. My 2 cents.
