Advice on a gambling situation...

I don't know if he had a lapse in judgment, or you missed a point he may have been making.

Again, from the perspective of the room owner, he may be thinking, WTF, I'm here long enough, I wanna go home. It would be nice if somebody asked me ahead of time if I minded them starting so late. Fu#% em, I deserve some consideration myself.

I don't know why some of you guys automatically assume the owner thinks his time is still only worth table time after hours.

Maybe going home to sleep was worth more to him than you could pay period. Maybe he felt he was being taken advantage of.

Fair enough. I just need to communicate more clearly I guess. It really pissed me off the way it went down. I guess my point is that I had a history of paying him, I wish he would have given me the chance to do it again...and if I didn't, he could say something. Lots of good advice and it's nice to hear from room owners and what his perspective may have been.

Doesn't strike me as a gambling issue (the set is fine) or a money issue
(the amount of money charged for staying late is fine). It's a simple courtesy issue.
So, you don't need to change the set, the timeframe, or the amount paid.

I think courtesy issues are best dealt with by just talking directly to someone.

You could try some passive way to get back at him, and hope he takes the hint,
or you could just say "You know, it was kinda rude how you just took a cut
without any agreement ahead of time. It's a fair cut but that wasn't your money
to just take without asking. I was decent to you last time, why did you
treat me like a chump?"

it would've been really interesting what he would've done if the match was finished on time.

or if the other guy had won and wanted the full amount.

As far as being "taken advantage of," the room owner was in control of everything the entire time- the money, the table, the room. He could have kicked them out, he could have taken out $50 or $300.

As far as being put out and needing some "consideration," in the first match-up he was staying late already for the card game-- the pool game didn't affect his time or sleep in any way. In the second match-up, he could have said, at any time, "We're going to have to make an arrangement for after hours."

Without any agreement or discussion beforehand, the room owner stole the money that they trusted in his care- and then said so.

That method reminds me of punks at the local liquor store- they grab candy off the counter and look at the shop owner square in the eyes and say, "I'm taking this."

Does your opponent know that you have been throwing a hundred to the owner? What happens if he wins one? I can fully understand the owner taking it out to make sure he didn't get screwed, but, he shouldn't have done that. Especially after you treated him good the first time. Same as with the rules of the game, make sure everyone knows how things are supposed to go down before you start. Then you won't have any problems afterwards.

As far as being upset about what the owner did, forget about it. Don't let worrying about that affect your game at all. Just chalk it up to "experience" in the communication department.

yup, i remember when you learned to gamble on the rail, not the internet......

Bad form

It would have rubbed me the wrong way also...

When he took the $100 on his own, you should have smiled and said, "cool, I was gonna give you $200. Thanks!", and walked away...

Just come play me a set next time at my home room and ill cover the fees win or lose..ha ha really that's a kinda tough one. I would just tell the guy u r playing that yall finish before time or continue. I'm a generous tipper but never tip anyone that asks for it. And I tip at the drive thru.

I played a guy in my home room about 2 months ago. We played a race 8 one pocket for $1K a man. We posted the money with the owner. We started about 9:00 PM and finished about 3:00 AM. The place usually closes at 2:00 AM but they had a big poker game going in the back and there were quite a few people still in the place. I won. The owner came over and paid me the $2K. I immediately handed him $100 just for holding the money and staying open an hour late; even though he would have been there anyway for the poker.

So I play the same guy again the same way about 3 weeks ago but this time only for $800 a man. We start and finish around the same times and I win again. This time, the poker game is not going on and he is staying open an extra hour for us. I have full intentions on giving him $100 again. But this time, he walks up to the table and hands me the money. I say, "Is this $1,600"? He says, "No. It's $1,500. I'm keeping a $100 for my time". I immediately said "OK, I planned on doing that anyway". But, it really rubbed me the wrong way that he would just take it without asking or having an upfront agreement. He enjoys watching the action and sat there all night sweating it.

The reason I bring this up is that I may play the same guy again tonight and he will want to post with the owner again. I don't mind giving him a jelly roll if he stays open but I still harbor a little resentment over the way he acted last time. What to do???

It is not just staying open, there is a responsibility in holding the money. You are getting off cheap IMO. Granted he should have waited until you offered, but he does have something coming.

Off the top pool room

Hes a story for u about pool rooms that do that kind of thing..........in 1972 chester trulove owned a pool room in okc.......called truloves billiards.............all the action was there...right of i-40 on western ave.......ra was there grady hitchcock. Shooting at the ghost etc. Everyone was betting high...matlock playing detroit danny 900 a game on bar box.etc. Then one day chester decides he will take 10% of the top of all action and if you dont pay ur barred! Wow.....60 days later no pool hall...all players and action gone.....only short stops and locals and no action..........my name is sparky.....just ask its all true me and dick lane on the rail...........

Screw the owner.
Find a different pool room to play at, start earlier, and if you and the guy are pretty square on the cash, put it on the light.
If the owner gets nasty because he heard about it, next time there is a poker game in the back, call the cops and stick it up his A$$.

You don't TAKE money from me.
I GIVE you money if you deserve it.
You take it, you are F@#$ED!

Saw this scenario unfold when a new guy started working at a pool room, who basically EXPECTED a % of all action he witnessed, even if he wasn't staying open.
Yeah. No one gambles there at night anymore.

Itz da money bay-bee !

I don't gamble often, and when I do I go small.
That said :

1- It's YOUR homeroom
2- You posted w/him ,... he held it. No problems!
3- YOU walked out 700 heavy !!!
4- Tell yerself :" Itz da money bay-bee,............ itz da money baybee," over & over again.
:D:wink:

Without any agreement or discussion beforehand, the room owner stole the money that they trusted in his care- and then said so.

But there was an agreement made ahead of time. It was put in writing! It was written on the front door under the heading "Business Hours".

Now I'm not saying taking a cut like that was right, I'm saying maybe he did it because he was pissed off. God knows I've fumed a few times at customers various antics.

Trust me, it sucks being tied to the place constantly even during normal business hours.

If you love pool, don't open a pool room. Odds are you will fall out of love quicker than you think.

Also, just because he decided to stay late the night before to play poker and out of the goodness of his heart, allowed tables too continue to play, doesn't mean customers are supposed to feel they are entitled to that automatically at their discretion any night they want. Just saying.... :)

Your post got me thinking about some of the stupid stuff I have seen in the pool room...about 10 years ago, I had closed for the night (so it must of been about 4 AM ish) and was restocking the coolers for the next day. As always, I had 6-8 players hanging around "BS'ing"...when some "woofing" starts between two of them. They ask me to let them play ONE GAME (one pocket) for $500...OK (I used to be a pool player..LOL). So the game takes place...it gets over pretty fast 12-15 minutes (I did not punch them in). I hand the $1000 to the winner and he asked "Do I owe you anything"? I tell him, yea just give me $2 (predicated on our standard hourly rate at the time). He says "TWO DOLLARS...WE ONLY PLAYED ONE GAME".... So I told him to take the $2 and stick it up his ass! But that is a "pool player" for you...complete moron!

He asked you if he owed you anything after winning $500 and you said $2 and he beefed about that ?
You should have then said, "Youre right, my mistake. Now its $20 !" What a worm, lol.
