You guys have a serious reading problem. So, for the second time, I didn’t say I’d be as good as him in 5 years, I said given enough time.

Not like I’m gonna start believing I can’t achieve pro-level because of bitter old men.

If you make "pro" in 5 years, what then?
You still won't be able to beat anybody but the scrubs.
What's the point?
Put in another 5 or 10 years of dedication and get to the next level?
Good enough to compete against everyone but tournament winners?
Still no money there, and no glory.
I think you are looking at this all wrong from day 60 .
If you play the game for enjoyment , it will never be wrong, if you play for anything else, it will never be right.
Just my opinion.

So your shtick is to come onto a forum, ask people a specific question as if you want an honest opinion, argue with them when they don't tell you the answer you wanted to hear, and then call them haters and bitter old men?

Classy...

If you come here only to point and laugh, then no, I don’t want your opinion. It’s what one stroke has been doing, and it doesn’t contribute to the conversation.

Do you think it does?

I’ll take the constructive criticism, but telling me I most likely have high school education at most or whatever is not coming into a conversation with a well-meaning opinion

If you don't want the answer don't ask the question ,, if there's one pro who got there in 5 yrs , I would like to know who that is ,,,,

So, I recently started playing the incredible game that is pocket billiards (july) and quickly developped a great interest forthe game.

I am not aiming for anything lower than pro and was wondering what would be a realistic target to aim for? The pro who owns the pool hall where I play became one after 4 years, so I'm figuring it is very much possible to do, but then he told me it was before there were rating systems in place and so he was ranked as such arbitrarily.

After asking another one who became one just this year, it took him just a little over 5 years.

So, everything points toward it being very much possible, albeit very hard and not without a lot of hard practive and lots of tournaments.

Since I started, I have been playing/practicing about 30-35 hours a week on average.

What's your take on this? Am I looking at this the wrong way? Input from others is always interesting to hear.

Sam

I only read this post
Who were the 2 pros you talked with ?

Sylvain Grenier and Fred Lapointe. You might have seen Sylvain at Turning Stone if you watched the stream.

Sorry I don't know those guys .
You will need to play with good players and play everyday.
5 years it could happen .
The thing is if you work a normal job it will be very hard .
The money in pro pool really is not worth all the time and effort it takes .
Take it from me I play a pretty good level of pool .

I like your ambition. Keep it up and don't worry about the negative criticism. Did Bill Gates or Steve Jobs ask a forum if they could become wealthy and successful in the future? No, they just kept working hard.

Same goes for SVB, Efren, Earl, they all kept working, instead of asking people if they are capable of achieving something. Once you have strong will, dedication, and patience, anything is possible.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah the money in pool is pretty bad. I should have mentioned on the initial post that my goal was along the lines of playing at a pro level rather than making a living out of it.

You want to play at a pro level in 5 years? It can probably be done, in the sense that a very talented individual can concievably reach a very high level in such a short time.

Do you want to make a living playing pool? Then, that is different. The odds of that happening is probably close to those of becoming an astronaut or top theoritcal physicist, probably even worse. How many successful professionals exist in the US and Canada combined (people who actually makes a decent living). How many pool players in the two countries? Do the math. Genetics and hard work will be necessary, but non sufficient to reach the goal. You'll also need lots of luck and the support from people close to you, keeping you alive and fed for the time you won't be earning a dime. You'll likely have to play round the clock for such a rapid development to be feasible. And you'll need mentors and sparring partners at the pro level. Good luck, you are going to need it.

The point was in a round about way was to point out the only person that should even consider pool as a profession is someone who has no other skills to make money on or has grown up in the game and again have no other skills ,,

The others I mentioned grew up with a pool stick in thier hand ,they were well on thier way at 13 not 23 , 5 yrs from now you will be 28 by then John will have 5 more yrs of playing world class pool and your hopping to trade matches with him ,,
The odds of that are millions to 1 whether you want to hear that or not

I would bet the majority of the current pros got to pro caliber within 5 years of picking up a stick and getting the pool bug. 3 that immediately come to mind and have been discussed here a lot are Corey, Schmidt, Mcready. Now, they did not get to their best in 5 yrs, but they got most of the way there, and certainly to pro shooting ability.

To the OP.....

If you dedicate yourself like you posted, don't waste your time. Make sure your training is regimented and follows a structure. Every minute of training matters
Get through these books over three years and you will be outstanding. The videos are excellent too.

Look up Ralph Eckert, and also check billiard app.

How long do you think "realistically" think it would take you to hit Morra's level?

You're gonna need a good 25 years of hard pool experience to play that level. That's what John has. By then you will be 48 and past your prime.

Like someone said before, that kid has been hitting balls since he could walk. You are starting waaaay too late to hit that level.

So does that mean that every pro athlete in all sports have to come out of their mothers belly with there destiny??? That doesn't make any sense at all. Talent and dedication that's what it takes to have a chance, one doesn't have to have a cue in one hand and there mouth on their mothers tit to make it happen
