allen hopkins billiard payouts 2012

Ams

In golf if you win 600 or more you loose your am. status. We have people who work 40+hrs. jobs who are real am. playing guys that play pool for a living not playing pro events so they can play real am. and wonder why tourn. struggle.Used to be if you played in a tourn. with 350 entry you were a pro.If your playing to make money dont get in am. tourns.

I use to be in the camp that wondered about the SBE payouts. As the years have gone by, i've realized that payouts are secondary to the main question which is will I have alot of fun at this event? After talking to people who have been and reading AZ, its clear to me that the answer is yes.

I no longer begrudge any man's right to make some money providing me with entertainment. Life is too short to sweat this type of money. That's why I work after all, pool is just fun and games.

More power to the Hopkins crew, here's hoping they thrive and improve the SBE. Ill be there in 2014 hopefully!

a fun time

When I first read the OP's post, I was somewhat in agreement; however, after reading on about the magnitude of the event and the work that goes into it, I realize what many have said.....$34,000 doesn't seem like much money at all in that context; this is an event for people to go have fun and enjoy pool and all that goes with it...like a pool fan's convention. if you will...

Also the factor of the low entry fees comes into play.....If you are a pool player trying to make a living on the tournament prize money, you are probably looking in the wrong place.....

Expo

I will be going again this year. I have a room for the 4 days and am splitting with a buddy of mine and the room will cost me $200 after split. The warm up and open event is costing me $130. I spend close to that on the joss tour in a weekend and have little chance of cashing but enjoy the competition. Givin that the entry gives me a weekend pass is a bonus. No quarters come out of anyones pockets unless they are on the practice or challenge tables. This event is just a great time, filled with a whole lot of pool, and a great bunch of people. Anyone who hasn't been, should go at least once before casting their opinion.

To Allen and his crew, thank you for all that you do to bring this event to us year after year. I hope you make more this year than you have in the past.

so was thinking of going to this tourny and was checking out payouts, and all I can say is wow!
SENIOR EVENT.... 365players @ 75.00 = 27,375.00
1-4th ..6,500
5-8... 2,800
9-16th. 2,000
17-32.. 5,600
total payouts= 16,900.00
difference........ 10,475.00

OPEN EVENT...... 979 players @ 75= 73,425.00
1-8th...14,800
9-16....7,200
17-32..11,200
33-64..16,000
total payouts= 49,200
difference.......24,225.00

money made on both= 34,700.00

think you pay quarters too, not sure?

now before you guys bbq me for this thread, I know promoter has to make some money, not opposed to that at all. lot of work and energy! this talley is only for 2 events, i am just opposed to making your whole year on 1 event. plus, i dont know about if tables are open or not? just seems like a lot to take to me. plus, there is no added money, just money taken out. it's a big event, and well supported it looks like, but 5,000 for 1st with that big a fiel seems weird. a guy who wins this event would have to play awsome! just some thoughts, let the bbqing begin! lol

If it's that easy why don't you run the exact same pool tournament and get rich?

Didn't anyone pay attention to DennyS' post? Take 1000 players at $50 ea equals $50,000. If the OP's figures are correct, SBE paid out $49,200. Do the same math for the Seniors and Super Seniors and you can see SBE pays out nearly 100% of the $50 entry fee. Twenty five dollars for the use of a table for four days for free? Entry into the best cue and billiards accessory show on the East Coast for free? Sorry OP. You are way off base.

Yes, Allen makes money on this event. Hope he makes lots of it every year it's open. Best pool tournament on the East Coast bar none! No wonder the game of pool is dying. Players can not recognize a gem right in front of their eyes! Really, really sad.

You are a thousand % right on both points... the payouts are criminal and you will be BBQ'ed for sayin so. If Barry Behrman did this they'de linch him

But I am willing to bet that all of the winners will be paid in full on the day they are scheduled to be paid. Allen Hopkins will not give any excuses or ask anyone to wait. BTW, maybe he could help Behrman out with the US Open. The player will know theyare gong to get paid.
\
\I will double down on that bet. I bet all of the worker and the owbers of thevenue will also be paid on time in full

You get paid immediately after the event whether your an amateur or pro...Allen does it right. Also remember that your entry fee includes entry into the expo for the whole weekend and I think I was told into the pro event also? I don't care about the payouts as much as the single elimination. There are some MONSTER players in this tournament that you can get matched up against that should be or are Pro that the average amateur who works a full time job aint gonna beat lol You WILL have a great time and thats what's important. It's f%$^%^& pool nirvana! The first time your there it's almost to much to take..like sensory over load lol

and yes the wednesday warm up is by far the best deal. Win three matches and you make 400..but again it is open to everyone. So I've seen players like Johny Archer and shane V. playing in it lol but you get in the right bracket and you can make a nice payday. I miss the mini tournaments they used to have all weekend. Me and a friend used to team up and split everything we made and made a nice little profit from those tournaments.

If it's that easy why don't you run the exact same pool tournament and get rich?

I don't believe I stated it was easy sir, nor did I say I wanted to run a tournament. you should reread my post because obviously you missed some things. lol

90% of the replies must be people who are on allen's public relations payroll... lol just kidding. first off, I wasn't or didn't say anything bad about the tourny or the event. I even stated that the promoter needs to make money, and that it was indeed a lot of work. I think almost all of you missed that part of my statement. I just stated the thing that I can see with my own eyes with regards to what's taken in vs whats paid out. only allen knows what he makes on the event after everything is done. he collects $ for vendor booths, spectator passes, etc and whatever else is involved. the hotel gets more then 1,000 people there for what, 4 or 5 days. I'm sure that is taken in account in negotiations with venue, and would probably garner a discount in some things. also, this area of the country in march or april is not exactly there season because weather is still cold. so as far as all this goes, only allen knows what he makes, and he does put a lot of work in it no doubt. I stated that the 1st time lol.

as far as I go, I work full time like everybody here, and I have never been to this tourny, from what everybody says here, it does sound like fun. so just because I question the numbers, ( I did so in a respectful way too, or tried too ) don't just berate me for it. there are a few that did, and if I offended you, sorry for that, just wanted to hear some thoughts on this matter. most of you were very informative and thanks for your imput.

the economy being what it is today, and working construction like I do, you do need to weigh out the costs with going vs what is paid out. If it was local for me, I would be there for sure. I'm not rich, nor have a big disposable income like some. also, making an income from pool has never been my intention. pool $ is fun $.if I can break even for costs and have fun, I'm happy.

so, thanks for the comments to most, hope this clarifies things a little, wasn't bashing allen or his staff. the tournament does sound like a lot of fun too. hopefully I can find a way to go. best regards to all

$35 to get into the expo for 4 days. $75 gets you into the expo for 4 days and it is really only $40 towards the tournament entry. When you consider the amount of work done for this entire event I don't see why there is a problem. How many people are working there? Referees, ticket sellers, cost of renting the space, cost of trophies, etc, etc.
I look forward to this event every year. The price is reasonable. The experience is wonderful.

Don't forget he brings in $1,100 per single vender booth. Maybe 200 of them give or take right?

All in all, he puts on a great show. $75 to win $5,000 is a great deal and the other money goes towards payouts for various pros. I'm ok with all of it. Also, this is what Allen does, he should profit.

"The sign post ahead reads The Twilight Zone."

Poolplayers always seem to be worried about the money someone else is making

It's a strange world, many people complain about pool players not making money, however, if one works really hard to make money they complain because they're making money. "The sign post ahead reads The Twilight Zone."

I would venture a guess and say that at the end of the whole Expo Allen does not make even $34,000. Not net at least. If he does...more power to him.
People are always whining about what's wrong with pool and here's a guy who busts his tail to put on an excellent show only to have people question the money payouts. What did you think? That he was doing this out of charity?

Lets do it for free and cover all expense

I guess Allen should pay all expenses ,all payouts and cater surf and turf for 30,000 people for 4 days.I am sure he will valet park every vehicle for no tips. When it is over he should sweep the floors.
Until you walked a mile in my shoes,,,,,,don't judge
Never begrudge a mans income.

The fact that so much of the pool community coming together in one place makes it worth every penny of the entry fee. Takes a lot of effort to do that and to be doing it for so long, well I hope it's been worthwhile for Mr. Hopkins. We all have to make a living. Everybody wants something for their own time but don't wanna pay for anyone else's.
