American World Straight Pool Champion 2009?

Who cares if they participate or not. Either you're the person who likes to help (and can) or you're not. If you're not, STFU you prob wouldn't help regardless.... so stop fronting. I doubt someone's posts determine if you help--- like you're the AZB Godfather or some sh**.

storke...Nothing against JS or SR (I like and respect them both), but I have yet to see a post where John has contributed anything about stroke, pattern play, or anything about playing or learning to play. Max has posted here before...not much, but he has posted. Compare apples to apples. If you don't want to participate, fine...but don't spoil it for those of us that do!

John gives insight to things that others are curious about. Not everyone cares about what kind of tip is on his cue or about his stroke.

i think the title could say want to be a pro why.not a top pro.

the top pros like archer, mika, busty, efren, ralf etc have made alot of money in their career and live a very envied life whether most want to admit it or not.
i think to play just normal pro speed and not win tourneys not be marketable etc is kinda a waste of time.

one top player i know very well gets 112,000 a year before he hits a ball.
ive seen many comment on here about how they would never want to be him.

lets see he gets 112,000 a year and has for many years. he has girls launch on him every tourney he goes too.
he does nothing but ,travel, wear what he wants, plays golf, signs autographs and even plays pool once in a while.

now before we all go yeah but thats only one guy.

when you say the top pros ,i dont know any top pro that is broke and if he is thats not because he doesnt make good money playing pool. its because he loses it in casinos or is just and idiot at managing his money.

furthermore i know many broke pro golfers, bowlers, etc .

believe me life is short . if the average life span was 200 years i would quit pool.

since life is so short i would much rather make what i make, and have my life than have a career that i dont like and make twice as much.
im sure the top pros agree with me that why they keep at it.

until someone is a top pro at any game and see all the perks that go with that ,i think its hard to say i would never want to go that route.to each his own though.

for some its a way to ease the pain . they say to themselves or other people 'i would never want to be a pro anyway.its because they have tried to become a great player their whole life and couldnt ,so instead they say i didnt want to be a pro anyway.

i wanted to be a pro baseball player.
im not big enough or strong enough and knew it.
instead of saying to myself i never wanted that ,i said hell yes i wanted that but was never going to be able to pull it off.

anyway im not directing what im saying at anyone. im just saying when we talk about not wanting to be a broke top pro ,lets try to remember they are far from broke and wouldnt trade lives with 99.9 percent of people anywhere.

He's also humble enough to admit his weakness and strong enough to admit his strengths without being cocky while doing so.

thanks everybody for the nice words.

i understand some on here hate me and rightfully so.

i am opinionated about pool related stuff.

after 20 years of what ive been through most would be too.

anyway ive been harsh a couple times and im sorry.

at the end of the day and my career i will be able to look in the mirror and say.
i dont owe people money, dont do drugs ,pay my taxes and treated people fair.

and if somebody remembers that i played good and was a good person thats fine by me.

as far as not coming on here and not giving free advice etc problem is im and cant type fast.

i have giving many free lessons in person and dvds .

anyway thanks for the kind words later folks.

I like Mr. Eberle but I don't like the way Mr. Lee continues to make jabs at Mr. Schmidt. Every since Mr. Lee got a little hot under the collar about Mr. Schmidt's opinion about instructors in another thread awhile back, it seems all I see is jabs anymore.

I'm not saying this to knock Mr. Eberle, I'm saying this to point some things out. JS has over 600 posts and of those posts he's given insight to the pro pool world, experiences in playing against other pros and certain tournaments. I've seen posts from him giving forum members a pat on the back for a job well done when they post that they ran 42 balls. The list goes on and on when it comes to John being a productive member of this forum.

Max has 14 posts. One is promoting his book, a few are about silly games where he would play for millions or play the president for the presidency, 3 were from selling cues or equipment and one was asking for a backer/sponsor for the US Open. If you want to compare apples to apples then don't compare JS to ME because there are approximately 600 different reasons why one is an apple and the other is an orange.

Corvette...and EVERYBODY ELSE...In post #25, I said I had just spoken with Max, and he's all for us forming a 'backer group', to help him get to the tournament, and is perfectly willing to share his winnings! This is settled, and now we can get on with raising the $$$! So far, it looks like we have about $450 committed...almost 1/3 of the way there!

I'm not really into the group thing. Just to humor me though, what are the payouts and proposed split? Nothing personal to anyone involved, I just don't back people that often and when I do it's purely from a business standpoint and backing people generally isn't a smart business decision. I just basically look at the money odds/player in question vs. amount of money outlayed (entry + costs).

Wow

STFU for me stating my view. Until now i have enjoyed your post and thought of you as a intelligent individual. That comment you made is way overboard. When its all said and done, I belive I have as much right as you do to post my views. Let me make it clear I have nothing but best wishes for Max. I was just stating my stance on the issue, nor was I trying to ruin it for the rest of you. As for me fronting please explain.....If I'm not mistaken my money is mine to support or not whomever I like.

I would be interested in John's post history prior to Purdy's assistance.

Guaranteed I would post here lots if the site had enabled me to play in the US Open (does anybody know what I mean;)?), moreso win it.

That said, lets take it off this thread. Let's have a Poll!

Spidey said it best.

You know up until post number 41 as I just read this thread I would like to compliment everyone who has contributed to this thread...It is very rare that you get a group of people on the internet that have a difference of opinion such as what there has been here, and everybody been logical and respectful of everyone else's views. Max good luck to you in getting to the event. completely off track i know but thanks everyone for acting like rational people having a discussion instead of turning it into a pissing match of who is right or wrong, its been enjoyable to read.

Wasn't even directed at you personally (sorry in advance if you thought that). I think it was directed at the lot of people complaining about his participation. You're 100% right - your money is yours and you can do what you want with it.

I just think one can help him or not - but don't stick it in his face how one would IF this and that.

Many pros avoid this site like the plague because of people internet-bashing them like nitwits -- meanwhile, they can't run 2 balls. So to piss on a pro because they don't post here while this hasn't been the friendliest environment for them in the past is queer -- as they say here "IMO". Proof of that is this very thread.

I honestly only read Scott Lee's post referring to someone talking about Max's posts... I didn't "call-out" Storke personally. It was meant for Lou, Storke, and everyone else who says they'd be inclined to help if it weren't for the lack of posts. The guy's a pro asking for help. Help, or... don't help. But, to ram about their participation when we've done nothing but chew them up and shit'm out in the past is really insane.

Sorry guys... you know I don't normally post rammy shit--- but my fingers divorced my mind for a few minutes. Sorry. I hope someone reads my posts in a few years when the few pros left get tired of fading the hate and there aren't any left.

JS started posting in Dec 2005 and nine months later in Sept 2006 he started the thread asking for a backer in the US Open. The post count in that 9 months is approx 75.

JS has endured some brutal stuff on here over the yrs. Its gotten better than what it was when he first started posting here but he still sweats a lot of BS.

Again, I like Mr. Eberle. He's a very nice young man who stands a great chance of doing quite well in this tournament and I hope he is able to get what he needs in order to go play in this event. I couldn't care less about his participation and only brought it up to show Mr. Lee how I believe his statement about JS was incorrect.

ok , glad you said lou. i didn't know where you were going with that. so then i agree with ya. also from what i see i have no use for LOU.he is here not to benefit anyone but to throw darts at them.i said max may have avoided this forum due to the abussive people on here. can't we all just get along .

So........almost 24 hours since this thread started. Any word from Max Eberle himself? Did you get enough money yet?

John Schmidt

......
I've seen posts from him giving forum members a pat on the back for a job well done when they post that they ran 42 balls. ......

I've also seen him do that a number of times, and I think it meant a lot to the 42 (or whatever) ball runner to get encouragement like that out of the blue from a world champion. John Schmidt is number one in my book.

Sponsorhip Details..

Got to love the internet!
I just spent over an hour personally thanking everyone who offered to help out or who helped clarify things.

Then it all got erased when I preview post for some reason... nice. I can't bear sit that long again so here is the short version.

Thank you to everyone who has offered to help and had something positive to say!

Ideally I'm looking for a sponsor for obvious reasons yet would be very happy to have a backer or multiple backers.

Total: $2,700 (give or take, could be less...)

Entry Fee: $565 ($650 after Aug. 15th)
Hotel: $700.35
Airfare: $483 to $628 at the moment.
Misc (food, taxis, clothes etc.) $800

For a sponsor I would promote them in various ways to be discussed.

What would be fair for a backer/s? You tell me...

I'll throw in a free copy of Zen Pool, a personalized signed photo, and a private lesson sometime down the road...

Thank you!
Truly,
Max

A sponsorship is probably the way to go with this if you can find it. Not to burst your bubble, but purely from a backing standpoint a 50/50 split is the absolute best you are gonna do.

Assuming the win pays the $14,000 that was mentioned and assuming you want the maximum backer/player split (50%). Then that would mean a win would yield $11,300 or $5650 each. That would mean a backer would have to view you as only a 2 to 1 dog to make it worth backing. Unless the field includes me, Spider, Disco, and Watchez, I doubt it would be worth it purely from a business decision. Then again, if people want to help you out then that is great.

In any case, I've only heard good things about Max and good luck to all of those that get involved.

Some suggestions on reducing the total ...

The Day's Inn is within walking distance and is $400 for Sunday to Sunday, tax included. (The Day's Inn is not the Sheraton, but it does have a Fuddrucker's next door.) American Airlines is offering LAX/EWR for $459 fees and taxes included. It is very likely that you could arrange a ride with someone who is attending or playing -- SJM comes to mind. That would save you a bunch on getting there. You could play in the qualifier at Comet, which starts on Saturday the 22nd at noon. That would save $500 or so, if you win it. (The savings from staying at the DI would pay for the extra nights and the entry to the qualifier.)

Good luck, maybe I'll see you in the qualifier. If you do go on Friday, the 21st, and return on Sunday, the 30th, I could give you a ride both ways (preferably to JFK).

This Day's Inn near this pool room is maybe THE worst I have ever stayed at. There were unsavory-looking people hanging outside and in the hallway throughout the night, but the scary thing was the inch-and-a-half gap at the bottom of the door to our room.

The carpet was moist to the touch, making you want to never take off your shoes, and the bed linen looked dirty. They also had black bugs flying around, maybe gnats or fruit flies. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Talk about a nightmare that gets worse and worse. The Day's Inn near Comet is a dump with a capital "D." You'd be better off sleeping in a car that locks.
