An Eddie Taylor bank proposition

Have you seen this shot, you bank the eight back into the same hole that the cue ball is in. In 1990 Bugs was trying to get people to bet 500 he could make it in 5 tries.

Unfortunately no one took the bet and I never got to see it made.

Edit the eight was froze on the rail in the six position and it was round and not oval like my horrible drawing!

That shot is similar to the bank in the following video, also a good proposition shot:

NV B.94 - Cross-side double-kiss bank of frozen ball

Enjoy,

The shot requires a little outside english. :

Bob, after watching this shot many times, and doing it as well, isn't it mostly low and just a bit of inside english, rather than outside? The inside english shortens the angle, and I can't imagine outside english keeping a sharp enough angle to pocket the ball.

All the best,
WW

It's the outside spin that pockets the ball, by spinning it a little off the rail back toward the shooter. That's why a spot of chalk on the contact point is a good cheat.

(About the Vernon Elliott cross-side bank shot....)

I have never played it or seen it played with inside. You are trying for an effective cut angle of well over 90 degrees. I think right side spin would make the shot impossible, with the unlikely exception of a masse shot.

A similar shot, but one that doesn't require the balls to be nicely gritty, is to move the object ball down the rail until it is a few inches from the far corner pocket. Then you bank the ball cross-corner as in one pocket.

Here are some diagrams:

But Bob, right side spin on the shot you show is outside english, not inside english. Right side, or outside english, should make this shot impossible, by your description.

I suspect we are talking about different shots.

For the Eddie Taylor cross-side where I'm hitting the ball pretty full and it looks like a guaranteed kiss, I play the shot hard with no side spin. Inside probably would not hurt but it is not needed.

For the Vernon Elliott "impossible" cross-side with the object ball on the other side of the side pocket, you need a relatively thin hit and as much outside as you can get. The reason that most players will be unable to make Vernon's shot even after seeing someone shot it is that they need to use maximum side -- very near miscue territory -- which most pool players rarely do.

Yep in regards to eddies shot that’s how he showed it to me back in 2004...along with a couple others. When you do learn it on a table you can gin it pretty well.

That shot can be modified just a tad to be double kissed and moved to the opposite cross corners for one pocket......it’s a pretty solid shot with good cb control as the follow helps it stick to the long rail
