And another old room dies

Wasn't there one near the Alexandria area that was upstairs?

I think you may be thinking of First Break in Sterling. That is upstairs.

I might have to go check out Frederick Champion's again. I just noticed they will be having a band there called "The Amish Outlaws" there. I got caught up on this cable TV show called "Amish Mafia." Keith and I were both entranced with them. LOL

Champions will have "The Amish Outlaws" there. Check 'em out ---> The Amish Outlaws.

And if you're looking for "easy" action......you can just go pick on their house pro. I heard he's only won a couple tournaments here and there throughout his career.......

My horse would say, "He can't beat me." :grin-square:

I would say, "Let's look around for some easier action first."

Reminds me quite a while back at the Carolina Open in Goldsboro one year, your horse jumped on Sylver Ochoa before he was very well known.

Remember that night? I think I bumped my head and dropped my wallet on that game. :p

That was a long, long night, as I recall. The 5-minute drive back to the hotel seemed like an eternity. :o

I've been trying to get the funding together to open a room in my area. Stories like this sadden and scare the doo do out of me.

BTW Lyn, I copied and pasted your ideas into my ongoing idea document for my future room. One major difference is I'm looking for a fairly large plot of land so that I can have a driving range there too. Come for the driving range, stay for the billiards.

Sorry to hear that World Class closed. I lived in the Boston area for about 5 years and played there the entire time. The place had changed a lot in the past 1-2 years. The room could have used a refreshing, but it was hard to say that further investment was worthwhile. I made a lot of friends there, but many were not coming any longer for various reasons. The losses of World Class and Country Club are significant for North Boston pool.

Thinking maybe of Lucy's ARL? Formerly a champions I believe?

You park in a small dirty parking garage downstairs, a staircase outside takes you the room above, which has a pit with 4 tables on the left, and the rest of the room off to the right. Bar next to the pit between them.

Still open, not a bad place to shoot but the tables needed leveling. Some really bad karaoke.

Dave had alot of world class events at Country Club.
It was quite a place !

Do you remember the little guy who took pictures at the AllAboutPool events?

I think I remember him being handicaped on his left side, like he once had a stroke.

His wife was always with him. If I did know his name at one time, I can't recall now.

I played in quite a few events and wondered if there is a stock pile of photos including my folder.

tyia for info.

I think Joe Tucker would know this photographer !!!

Twas probably a champions at one time I think. Most of the tables off to the right, in two lines?

Yup that's the one. Blue felt (at least lately) for all tables. Stage at the right end of the double-row of tables. Bar back a ways to the left of it.

I can't see going there when there's all the places in springfield and maybe FE in fairfax (which is slowly improving). But lucy's seemed like an ok place. Everyone's friendly.

Pool rooms are always closing, even in the best of times. The reasons are many. Locations and neighborhoods evolve, change, deteriorate, local competition from new entertainment options, owners and clientèle just lose interest. I don't concern myself with closing rooms.

What alarms me is how few new rooms have opened in the last decade. Take a hard look at that.

true enough - many times when one company shuts down, there are 3 more ready to take its place in the market. this has not been the case with pool related businesses in particular for a long time.

Not gonna lie, I'm at work and didn't have time to read the whole thread, but I'll try to later.

With that said, I think the absolute keys are:

1. Own the building/property outright.

2. Own the tables outright.

3. Have a big enough pool of players that at least cover the nut on utilities/any other bills AND upkeep of the equipment. If you're doing this venture for a profit, it might be tough. But, if you want to simply break even and maintain the equipment, I honestly think it's doable in many areas.

If you have that part licked, I think you could slowly add "services", such as a small grill, etc. for food and drink.

I think a room with security cameras that transmit the footage offsite (or at least thru a Wi-Fi connection.....in case someone tries to trash a camera) with as trustworthy clientele as possible would be ideal. Players pay their membership and have 24/7 access to the room, unless they're given proper notice (i.e. you're having the tables recovered for a few days, etc.)

Inform them that every nook and cranny in the room is being monitored with the above mentioned technology. Keep their credit card on file. If anything is damaged, it will be seen on camera and they'll be approached FIRST to give their side of the story, so that things can be worked out peacefully person-to-person. Or their credit card can be charged for the damages. I think any incidents with good clientele would occur rarely to never.

If they want to bring in one guest, they're allowed to do, with the rule being that again, they're being monitored and the member IS responsible financially for their guest's actions.

Now, I wouldn't be a d ick about it, but just sit a prospective member down and go over the rules. Explain your side of the situation and most people wouldn't mind. Emphasize that this is a room for SERIOUS pool players. You don't want to sound elitist. You just want to know that they truly love the game and you're giving serious players a nice environment away from the "real world".

BTW, I'm a libertarian that shudders at the thoughts of being monitored, lorded over by drones, etc. But, those things are without my choice. I digress......

......these people would have a choice. We want to do something very similar to this in our area, as we have a fairly tight-knit group of 8-10 trustworthy guys and we may soon be without a place to play.

Again, own as much of the afore mentioned things as you can and keep the overhead to a bare minimum WITH nice equipment.

Paul, that is my point. Rooms are closing and none are opening. Is pool dead? Has it become just a cult? Think of all of the people you know. How many actually give a rats patoot in the least about pool. I haven't had anyone in years tell me how they put themselves through college playing pool (). Anyway, at least in my part of the world I am really thinking it is dead. Just like bowling.

I was told by those in the know table resales and new are terrible!
what does this mean for the future prospects of pool rooms
i think video games are killing participant activities!
