Another Question For CJ Wiley

uh huh

This is as good a thread as any to ask this question. Why do the commentators feel the need to describe the simplest things
when doing Pool commentary as if they're speaking to a bunch of rank beginners when most if not all of the viewers are hard core Pool fans.

Now before you get on your high horse and tell me we're trying to attract new fans, (I think we're all aware of that) let me ask the question why
in the major sports that have much more complicated rules than Pool do they not feel the need to boringly explain the simplest things over and
over till it puts the viewers to sleep. Do others think this is helpful, really ? The major sports don't seem to think they have to do that to attract new
fans, then why in Pool ? It certainly doesn't seem to be helping. Yes I know major sports already have lots of fans, that's not the point, TY.

I mute the narrations 'cause I get tired of hearing the word "perfect"......

"The Game is my Optometrist"

I actually watched that game and it's pretty good. I especially like the solid colors.

It suprised me how big the pocket were, smaller than pool tables, but pretty forgiving. 8 Ball on anything other than tight equipment is too easy.

We play two 8 Ball tournaments a week on super tight tables. Lot's of good players and I give them a game going to 4. I can get away with that spot and win only because the table will punish poorly stuck balls.

You're right, changing rules doesn't matter. What does matter is taking the time to taylor fit the game to a particular sponsor. I can't believe this didn't come to me sooner, although timing is usually perfect, so I'm just excited to have "new eyes" for the game.

I've been watching the Chinese 8-ball event on stream the last couple of days and my feeling is that 8-ball is a perfect game as long as the pockets are tight enough for the level of those competing. In truth, 8-ball is also the only game than most amateurs know or care about, and its great simplicity (one has stripes, the other solids, and the eight can't be shot until your clear your set). It is nearly as simple as snooker, which my grandmother could easily understand into her late 80's (red color red color, etc. until the reds are gone).

As the Bonus Ball guys learned, changing the game is not the solution. How long the new game takes to learn doesn't matter.

Even when the pros play 8-ball, they usually don't count the 8 on the break, so they are not playing the game the amateurs know.

Bit by bit, pros have disenfranchised amateurs by changing the games and the rules to make the game less and less recognizable to amateurs.

That sounds interesting, although there's no game like the one I'm working on. It does have components of several games blended (not shaken and stirred) to get the most ideal situation in every game......for the competitors and the viewing audience.

We worked this game to completion like it was a complex mathematical equation.

Finally, after many years it has been solved. Now there's a lot of work to do, which is awesome for me, I haven't had any significant business challenges in over 5 years.

CJ, In all seriousness...You and I may not, (or may never be) on the best of terms !.. But, I hope you will admit, I have never wished you anything but the best of luck, in your efforts to promote the game/sport of pool !..What happened to your original plan, of approaching sponsorship, and TV exposure, by creating some type of pool reality show ?.. I think we both know, what a huge investment in time, and money that would take, even with the best of connections.

You say you advised the Bonus Ball group, that they were doing a lot of things wrong...I'm sorry, but to dig up our old 'inside joke' a 3rd grader could have seen that..I tried to talk Fast Lenny, and Scott, out of pursuing that "fiasco'', from the very git-go !..They were dazzled by the $$$$, (which soon dried up) which was understandable.. but I could see it was no good from its very inception !

Not trying to say I was a business genius to see that. The ONLY thing BB had going for it, was the 'home town, team concept' and they butchered that, by spending HUGE $$$ on a fancy facility, in the WORST city they could have built it in !.. If you were going to open a new 'Mom and Pop' burger joint, would you build it right next to 10 or 20 MacDonalds ?...There is simply to much else to do in Las Vegas,... 24/365 ! That was their first major blunder ! ...They still, in spite of pissing off all the other promoter's, had a chance to make it work, if they had not got hung up, on their ego driven game, and just played old fashioned 8 ball instead, and made it into a "home, against home" event !.. With big TV $$$, it could be very doable !

So here you are, trying to introduce, yet another 'new game' after seeing all the pitfalls Bonus Ball went through.. Sorry CJ, but I don't think that's the answer.. 'Joe six pack' and every CFO, or CEO, of a potential ''High $$$$ sponsor", KNOWS how to play 8-ball !..With some very minor tweaks (Last pocket or 1-15 in the side, etc.) it can be made into a VERY exciting 'Pro' game, while still being instantly recognizable, by everyone on the planet !.. Solids and Stripes...What could be simpler ?

I hope you will appreciate the time I put into this post, and whether you agree with me or not..At least acknowledge it, answer a few questions, and we can kick it around a little ! You are NOT a 3rd grader, and I respect your business 'sense' ! I will pull for you, whatever you decide to do, because, like you, I also have a passion to see pool somehow succeed !..I am just a little (or a lot) too ''long in the tooth", to try and implement it myself. :sorry:

Sincerely...Good Luck !

SJD"

PS..Its not impossible, we may have some VERY similar thoughts, on what you are calling, your "New Game"! ;)

just "lucky".....at least that's what Efren would tell you.

Thanks, bud, it's been a long time coming.

Nothing's changed with the reality show, I'm still under contract and keep a weekly dialogue flowing. My forte is producing, promoting, and yes, even playing in televised events. I can't put 9 Ball, 10 Ball or even 8 Ball on TV (even though I agree with you that 8 Ball is a great game), however this new game is formatted to be TV friendly.

I'm excited, there for a bit I was concerned that you might be right, and I was wasting precious time. However, that all changed recently, it appears that my time is impeccable, which is just "lucky".....at least that's what Efren would tell you. :)

Glad you have some good bar time today, I'm sure you have a nice buzzzz going.

I have question for you also CJ.

How many mirrors do you have in your house?

Well, 2 questions actually.

Do you ever get tired of Bragging/Talking about yourself?

Maybe you're right, I should let someone else do that - here's a post from John Barton's Facebook page today by a beautiful, young lady.

Speaking as someone who just really loves pocket billiards and would like to see it get the attention and respect the game and players deserve, I just would like to say that I appreciate ANYONE who is willing to put in the time, work, sacrifice to try and make this happen. And, with the kind of reputation and experience CJ Wiley has, he is definitely one of the people who can make this a reality... Now, that is not me bragging on him, that is simply a fact. A lot of people complain, and few try to do anything about it... And when someone DOES try to bring something new to the table, it's bombarded with criticism and negativity by the people who say they love the game... One thing is for certain, something needs to change in order to get pocket billiards the respect it deserves.
Thank you, CJ, for your enthusiasm and work that you've put forth towards bettering "the game." It's an inspiration to me and gives me hope for the future of a sport that I love

Bonus Ball is not dead yet is the word I got from Larry himself. The arena/studio is still there I have heard with a new business plan. We shall see how it pans out this time. :)

Fast Lendon, old buddy....Puhleeeeeeeeeze !... Lets us have a drink or three, and I will convince you that Bogus Ball, is deader, than dead !..And, it deserves to be !..I love ya, but please, for your sake, do not go down that road again !..BB ain't a bad game, and I'm sure I would have enjoyed playing it myself....But the odds of it ever making it into mainstream televised pool, are about 750,000 to 1.... (our favorite game, 'one pocket', is only about 200,000 to 1 ;)

SJD--I would also bet, there ain't enough money in the world, to get sweet Michaela Tabb, to come over here again ...All these window's are wide open !..Lets post...I know you will take my check.... See you at the Mezz tour this week-end :)

Oh boy,,,, I cannot figure out why people are hating on CJ.........

But maybe (probably) I am not the sharpest stick in the shed.

However, I think he is awesome and I love reading every one of his posts. I would absolutely buy any book written by him.

CJ,, keep on doing what you do,, I am a big fan of yours!

Well said, CJ.

Bonus 8-ball

Can we just use the current Bonus Ball teams and have them play BCAPool / CSI League format? On tight 9' tables? I'd watch that.

Freddie <~~~ and maybe so would league players

LOL!!!

You have such a way with words, honestly I will owe you dinner - you have given me support through logical, concise, unbiased posts. Now, in the last few days I feel like I've reached the top of the mountain and can see crystal clear - the view is amazing!!!

It's about perspective. I, like most people was blinded to what pool was really about - from the entertainment point of view.

It was a huge challenge to be able to see the forest for the trees.......there's a fascinating story behind what made my mind re-boot so I could see the game's true nature and how to maximize it's potential. I'll tell it in 2016, it wouldn't be appropriate now.

Aloha

2016? It should be good after simmering for a year!

Best,
Mike

Seriously??

Why all the hating?
I feel it's great that CJ is doing all he is to promote the sport. I played a lot of pool in my day, and a lot of pool around CJ at the big tourneys. He was always a gentleman, and an amazing rotation player. Now, I understand that some folks have issues from time to time, but wow, just.... get over it. (unless like, CJ banged your Mom or something.... that might be a little touchy. LOL) Life is too short to waste time hating. Don't we all want to see pool succeed on a HUGE level? Isn't pool the reason you are here on this forum?

Personally, I appreciate your effort CJ, and I wish you the best in all of your endeavors. Please, make pool relevant in the market again! I am pulling for you. (and anyone else properly promoting our great game!)

AND, if you must look in the mirror 200 times a day to do it.... so be it. LOL!

Good luck Sir,
Brandon Lee Spitler.

Best wishes my friend and play well in 2015

I have been ask "when are you writing a book" several times, and that day will come. First things first though, my boss (the Game) has a mission that's my top priority. There's no compensation, although the challenge has given me a new lease on life.

Best wishes my friend and play well in 2015, it could be the break though year for all of us. Someday we'll look back and say "wow, how were we stuck so long doing the same things over and over expecting different results?" - they say this a form of insanity, who knows, the important thing is to make the necessary changes.
