Well yet another room closed "Commack Billiard Emporium" what the F is going on here.

This Nonsense has to stop, whats next they gonna strart closing STARBUCKS, probably not for a long time since its a trendy place to go have over priced coffee ! ! !

I was not supprised to hear that they had closed, they lasted alot longer than they should have. they werent in the black for a long time, but it was a good place to go for alot of years for some action!

Sux to see another one go down, I cant remember the last time I saw a "40 Table Room Just Opened in......". I sure hope I do. Mike Janis had a close one until the building owner decided that he didnt want alchol served at a sports bar-I believe that was the problem, Mike made a thread yesterday about it so if I'm wrong sorry.

I dont think Starbucks has to like it in a few more months, as people start cutting down on their spending the $5 cup of coffee might not be so popular anymore. I read a few articles that Sbux is starting a $1 cup of regular coffee in some test market areas, they wouldnt be doing that if they liked the future, Suppose that someone is making say $500/week and goes to Starbucks 5 days a week on her way to work, like a secatary might do thats $25/week which works out to be 5% of her pre tax income for coffee??? while gas is $4.00/gallon, this will catch up to people and they will start to think twice about the $5 coffee, Starbucks is just lagging behind reality. Why am I talking about coffee on a pool board?, sorry-must be the meds or lack of meds. I'm going to Starbucks, bye for now. :)

There's another room in Springfield Oregon closing I saw on Craigslist.

if there's any pool rooms in any area look for them to close in the near future. i would imagine that a city of .5 M can hold a room or 2, but lesser populated areas will be held to bars. they've got to get income. the better is rooms with great food (although great tits might work too - good for the image that won't/can't change)

or a starbucks pool room for the 'fresh' people maybe ;)

They are falling and quickly. I just got word Sunday that Mcgoos 11 in Tulsa is closing as well. A nice room and a bold plan that just didn't work out. Jim has done a lot for the game and a good guy. I feel badly for him.

Poolrooms with nothing but pool can't make it with the high rents anymore. If you have an old building you own free and clear you have a chance to make it. All you are going to see stay in business are the sportsbars (and not the huge ones either) that have more barstools than pool tables.
As far as new places opening up, you have to be crazy to try. It would be like opening up a whorehouse and trying to run it by hand. One in ten will make it. There are just too many other things to do now.

PC's, PC games, home video games have taken most of the new blood that pool needed. Johnnyt

To add to the list, Market Square Billiards & Sportsbar in Springfield, Ma. has closed the doors in the last couple months. Seems they were there forever, 30 years that I know of. They had at least 20 APA teams of their own and they held the state APA regionals and qualifiers there every year, teams, singles 9ball etc..etc..The state came in and demanded they install a sprinkler system, and done by a state certified engineer and contractor. In an area that large I think they were looking at 100k+, they locked the doors instead.

while I am on the road I quit stopping in Truth or consequences ( New Mexico ) for a cup of coffee in Mcdonalds cause coffee was priced $1.70.

Commack, Long Island? If so, that's a bummer- my brother lives there (my mom is in Kings Park)- I'm coming home for a visit at the end of May and I was hoping I could head over to a local pool hall and shoot a few games with my dad and brother.:(

I don't know this for a fact but I would venture to guess that Long Island doesn't have very many JUST poolrooms left with the price of rent there. Johnnyt

There are two pool rooms in my town. A) One has like 40 tables. Some 9' diamonds, smart tables, and the rest antique tables that have been restored. All with simonis 860 tournament blue. Music is good-not too load.

B)The other room has 4 9' gc that have to be 20 years old. Of thoes only one plays good. The cloth is some knock off that doesn't last. You can actually see the slate in a spot near the rail. Rest of the tables are valley bar boxes, also really old. Also crappy felt. Music is death metal--screaming, yelling garbage.

I don't know if these closing pool halls are more simialr to a or b. But I am guessing that b in my town isn't going to be around a whole lot longer.

Yes, Magoo's 2 is closing unfortunately. But Magoos is going to remain open, and most of the Diamond Pro-Ams are being moved to the main Magoos room. I think they are selling off some of the 9 footers.

In St. Louis:

BCA instructor and ESPN Commentator Mark Wilson just decided to close his room. I believe he just got burned out. Hard to work 60 hours a week, EVERY week just to break even or make $5/ hour. He had a room featured in "Inside Pool" magazine where the balls were polished and cleaned multiple times a day. Every table brushed after a player finished and vaccumed several times a day. He tried to cater to people that wanted quality equipment. Guess not enough people want quality anymore. I by no means know about every room but this was about number 6 or 7 in St Louis to close in the past 18 mos.

Silver lining for me is that Mark is back in my room giving lessons now. He is one of those guys that loves the game so much it makes YOU happy. Really disappoints me that his room didnt make it.

We have lost 3-4 in the last (2) Years in Phoenix Metro Area, that were all more Pool Rooms than Bars. All three Six Shooters are gone.

we lost Baker's in Tampa a few months back. Was the oldest room in the state... and planet 9ball was down for awhile but is back. also just got big o's billiards that opened in the last year... plenty of pool here.

A new Ricochets is opening near my shop. Mixed feelings because I had been thinking that it would be a great place to put a few nine foot tables myself but having a place to play would sure be nice. I pass by several times a week to see how they are coming along. It is painful, like watching a pot waiting for water to boil! I sure wish they had waited until they were almost ready to open to put up a sign.

Problem Pool is out of vogue with today youth is they have Instant Gratification Video Games

Plus many of our rooms have gone down because Bad Management, New Anti Smoking Laws, and people have other thing to do.

A trip to the pool room is no longer a family outing, for mom, dad, and the kids.
