Call me a jingoistic patriot but I'd be prepared to bet the English used the expression first. After all they were playing hockey out in the fields before anyone had even invented a Zamboni.

Just as long as some Fisher or other wins though I will be happy :-)

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it down or not this year. Usually I try and make it down for the finals if nothing else.

VB,
My wife will be there, accompanying one of the players. You should say hello (but BEHAVE YOURSELF).

And you are letting her brave the wilds of Darkest Southern unescorted?

(Perhaps she is bringing with a portable pit.)

Field hockey has been played all over the planet for thousands of years. But the first depiction of hockey being played on ice is described below:

Many of these games were developed for fields, though where conditions allowed they were also played on ice. 17th century Dutch paintings show townsfolk playing a hockey-like game on a frozen canal.

As for the phrase "hat trick" I think the Brits get the nod.

Hat trick

Meaning: The accomplishment of three successes or wins.
Example: Pam has pulled off a hat trick, three divorces, three big settlements.
Origin: "Hat trick" originated from the English game of Cricket. The term originally referred to a bowler retiring three consecutive batsman with three consecutive balls.
This is roughly equivalent to a pitcher in baseball striking out three consecutive batters using only three pitches to each! This was considered quite an accomplishment and was traditionally rewarded with a hat.

The term is now used for other sports, always referring to an accomplishment of three. A popular use today is three goals by a single player in one game of hockey or soccer.

Alternatively,

Comes from the days when it was common for men (and women for that manner) to wear hats to social events, and in Canada a hockey game is a social event. If a player scored three goals in one game, appreciative fans would throw their hats onto the ice.

But the first RULES of Cricket were written LONG before any ice hockey rules...like 2 centuries so the Brits have us again.

That's nice, but please note that hand-clapping is considered preferable to throwing rocks in most professional tournaments ;-0

Me and Chris should be there also.

Chris and I will go there one or two nights too, since he'll be back from Iraq. Oh BTW, I took off the tournament last night with the exception of Vic. Yeah he started off the finals with a two pack on me after winning the coin toss. Conmsidering it was a race to five I was on the bottom end to start it off. I almost came back but not quite. I thought it should be true double elimination instead of a race to five in the finals and since I was in the hot seat, but oh well, I don't get to make the rules.

I'll be there too....go figure. I look forward to meeting new people and visiting with the friends I've made there in the past. Vagabond, I'm glad you are going to make it to a tournament again. It's been awhile.

Kelly...aren't you going for your 4th win at Viejas? You should be part owner of the place by now!

AD,
Yes, my wife is off for 2 whole weeks; checking out things in Taiwan and San Diego. My services as escort were not requested, so I'm here working for a living. Life sucks, then you die.

Actually, I was thinking about bringing a squirt gun:D .

Is it a Meucci?

That's funny! A few months back I bought my ex boyfriend a Meucci for his b-day. He loved the way it looked but hated playing with it.

I thought about bringing some water gernades to :D . It's warm in Alpine.

This is exactly why I strongly discourage my wife from ever buying me anything Pool-related as a present. If she ever bought me a cue I'd be forced to shoot with it no matter how awful it played, or how pretty the airbrushed unicorn was.

Friends don't let friends buy Meuccis.

going for Sunday.

I should be driving down for final day action. Who wants some friendly action on the side?
