any of you ever wonder why you play this game anymore? do you ever play out of sheer boredom? I've hit kind of a "dry patch" lately and just have no desire to play this game...at all! it may just be cause nothing is going on around here, but the game has gotten really boring for me. anyone else feel the same way?

You're right... You have to find a reason to play the game. I don't think many in the game play for the sheer joy of hitting balls into pockets.

I play for the competition, myself. Something way down deep inside likes to beat somebody else at something. I like to be in competition to see how others handle the pressure. When playing against other weaker players, I try my best to show them the game as it should be played. When playing against stronger players, I want to improve to the point where they respect my game to play me hard.

Are you playing against other players? Or are you just practicing by yourself? Are you setting up challenges for yourself in practice? Or are you just trying to pocket balls.

All of these might be a factor in you losing interest in the game.

Duke,

I've just been "off" when it comes to practicing. I haven't taken the cover off my table in nearly 2 years.

I need to find others to play first. I only want to play people as strong as I know I can play, but finding someone here to play is difficult. my "practice" regimins are playing people almost as strong as me, but even that is boring the heck out of me. c'mon winter time! I HATE snow, but love the pool room activity in this city. I wish it was all year round!

Are you the strongest player in your town? If that's the fact then I would suggest going on the road. I don't mean for a living, I mean for about a week. Visit local towns near you and match up. If that doesn't bleed it back into you than I don't know what will. If you aren't the strongest player in town, then match up with a guy who is a ball better than you and play him even. You will donate for awhile but your game will grow a bit stronger. If you are the type that doesn't feel like donating to the good players from time to time than I guess you have to rely on tournies to play the more advanced players. That will get very boring and you will burn out. You feel like you have hit a plateau. Get about a 100 that you don't need and gamble some 10 to 20 dollar sets nine ball with a better player. Who knows? You just might win. If you beat the guy your not supposed to beat then move up. Eventually you will hit a stump and match up where your chances are slim to none and keep playing him until you can beat him. Might be a week, month, a year even......But you will feel the urge to keep playing, and beat that weasel who keeps robbing you everyday. :D I've lost quite a bit, But I've won my share too. I don't think I'll ever lose the love for this game. But I'm dedicated to keep getting better.

No, never.

There is always something to do. If I am playing by myself, I can try and set new high run records. If I miss a ball inexplicably, then there is something to work on.

I guess it all depends on what you want out of this game. I want to be the best I can, and I am certain that I can one day achieve pro speed.

I play because I love the game and I will continue playing because of that.

I have pretty much quit. I'll venture out once in a while but I can't really get excited about it anymore. The poolroom is full of nits and I even find myself acting like one. When it gets to that point I don't need to be there.

Sometimes my cue justs sits in my car for weeks untouched. I am still fascinated with pool and like to live it vicariously through the pros but have no desire to play right now.

Jeff,
My wife and I recently renovated our den/living room into a pool room. We're both enjoying the heck out of it (and watching a LOT less television). We play almost every night, usually a race to seven (eight-ball mostly). On nights where we start playing earlier, we will play a race to eleven.
I know how you and others feel though with the pool burn-out syndrome. I have the same affliction with my motorcycle riding. Maybe someday you'll get the fire burning again. In the meantime, I hope you have some other "irons in the fire".

that was beautiful:)

Some fall in love with pool because its a challenge for a lifetime, a mountain that cannot be climbed. Irving Crane often argued that it was a game that took two lifetimes to master.

Others fall in love with pool because it's a game that (unlike basketball, for example) can easily be played against their mother, father, son, daughter, or even grandfather.

Some fall in love with pool because of the social aspects of playing, enjoying the company of one's opponent while competing.

Others fall in love with pool because of the people they meet through the game, for the friends and acquaintances they make through the game.

Some fall in love with pool for the thrill of competing and the high that succeeding in competition brings.

Others fall in love with pool for the thrill of watching the very best players in the world competing.

Some fall in love with pool because striving for excellence over the green felt gives one a winning attitude in other pursuits in life.

Others fall in love with pool because a game of pool is never postponed due to bad weather.

I fell in love with pool for all of these reasons, and that's why I have never have and never will tire of or get bored with the game. At least in my case, pool just keeps giving and giving. Pool is a game for a lifetime. Think back to why you fell in love with the game in the first place and it may provide the key to regaining your love of the game.

I fell inlove with the game back in summer daycamp, I think I was 5 or 6 and they had a square table that had nets in each corner, with green and red rings (and one white one of course).

It wasn't exactly pool but I would think about all evening/night when I was at home until the next day when I could play again.

I wont get into too many details but my life has always been complicated, and pool in any form is a simple game (not simple to master of course) however, simple in the sense math is simple.

It follows a set of rules that never change, it is a constant, always familiar.

While my priorities are in other places, I don't believe a day goes by when it (pool) is not included in my thoughts if even briefly.

I have been there when pool seemed boring, it was usually when I would plateau with regards to my skill level and be close to breaking through to the next level.

If that is the case, then ride it out, or if you are to the point where you are half-assing your practice/games then take a break for a week or so and jump back in refreshed.

Sometimes it helps just knowing others have been there.

Normally if I hit a dry spell, or just dont feel like playing anymore. I wont even touch my cues or goto the pool hall for a week or more and then one day will just head to the pool hall and start to shoot again.

I Think its alot of just letting yourself re-charge.

I can't remember the last time i hit a ball.
I really can't.
I want to go out and play now a days, but just can't bring my self to do it.:(
I guess I'm scared :D .
I think the reason i quit playing that day was because i was missing too many balls i should never miss.

Any suggestions?

None till the state of pool changes, if there was a national handicap feeder system like golf pool would move forward.

personally i know damn right if i had a table at home i wouldn't enjoy playing at all, because that would mean playing alone,or against lesser players.

it might be cool if you have buddies around some nights, but those occasions wouldn't justify the investment.

i have gone thru a patch where i enjoy much less playing, but i know why

my first reason is that the local pool hall owner annoys me
(long story, but to sum it up:i spend a lot of time and money in this club, and because i'm the only "foreigner" in that hall,he thinks he's doing me a favor by asking better players to let me win from time to time,or he's even telling peoples off when i'm playing money games:mad: ,i thought about packing up and change club, but all the players are good and we get-on like a house on fire!)

so now i have reduced the frequency of play.

2nd reason is that i was not potting anything (i would even miss some ball in hand shots:o :o :o )and i couldn't know the reason, but that's been fixed recently
