Anyone ever have Vertigo?

I get it a few times a year. Sometimes I get "light" spells, slight dizzyness. Usually rest takes care of it. Other times I get a nasty one. Reminds me of being so drunk, the room is spinning so fast, I can't stand up and get physically sick.

Doctor told me to use 25 mg. of Meclizine when I feel a spell coming on. Seems to help abit.

I had the same thing and went to the ER because I couldn't stand up and thought it was a stroke. Turned out to be inner ear infection. My regular doc gave me meclazine in case I need it. Spring and fall my sinuses clog up and I get the wobbly feeling. One Meclazine and I'm fine.

The first one scared the living hell out of me I honestly thought I was dying. I awoke in bed early in the morning as usual, upon opening my eyes my brain felt like it was spinning inside my head. I tried to sit up but was unable to and then started to throw up from the spinning. I tried to get up to go the the bathroom and was not able to walk, then I stumbled into the wall and collapsed on the floor.
This happened to me last year. I know that feeling of panic. I woke up, and it felt like gravity was constantly changing directions. I felt like I was going to slide off the bed, and because of my attempt to avoid that, I actually did fall right off the side of the bed. I tried to stand up and immediately took a header into the wall. I tried to look in the mirror (my closet doors are full length mirrors), but my eyes were shifting back and forth, like an ice skater's head while they do those crazy fast spins. (If I wasn't scared out of my mind I would have grabbed my slow motion camera :) ).

I truly thought I was dying.

I was living alone at the time, so I called my mom, a retired RN, and she calmed me down. She sent my dad to pick me up and take me to the doctor. I literally crawled to my front door (which was surprisingly incredibly difficult), unlocked the door, and laid down right there on the floor, face down with my eyes closed, which didn't even help. My dad showed up about an hour later, basically carried me to the car, and drove me to the doctor's office. I was scared to death the entire time.

By the time we got there, it had mostly passed. I went in to see him anyway, but we never did figure out what caused it.

It was by far the most terrifying day of my life.

To the OP: It sounds like your vertigo isn't as acute as that episode, but I just wanted you to know that I feel for you and I know what you're going through. You are in my thoughts. I hope the doctors are able to find a solution for you. Keep us updated.

Get well soon!

My one vertigo attack happened while I was driving back to L.A. from Vegas. It was on a series of up and down, twisty sections of the highway. All of a sudden I was having trouble keeping my car in the lane and kept driving onto the shoulder of the road. Somehow I managed to get off at the next exit and pull into a MacDonalds and park my car. I wanted to just get out of the car, but when I did I was having trouble staying upright. I kept falling against the side of the car and using it to keep my balance.

Like so many guys, I was embarrassed to ask for help. A lady who parked near me saw that I was having some sort of problem and asked me if I needed help. I told her I don't know. She said she was a nurse and she would call an ambulance for me. I didn't argue because I had no idea what was going on. They came shortly after and picked me up and took me the Barstow Community Hospital. I was fortunate that one of the doctors recognized my symptoms and gave me some medication and told me to lay there and wait it out. I fell asleep and when I woke up it was gone. Just like that I felt fine again. I have no idea what caused it or if it will ever happen again. That was maybe 15 years ago and have had no re-occurrences since then, thank God.

I'm a little scared that my pool-playing days may be over...after just 18 months of learning and loving the game.

On Friday afternoon I got up from my desk and felt a little dizzy. By Friday evening it was difficult to walk. My wife performed the basic "Stroke" test and was able to rule out having a stroke (No, not the pool kind; the medical kind!).

My symptoms all sound like subjective, peripheral vertigo. It takes a lot of effort just to shower, shave and get dressed. Thank goodness I work from home and can be in my office today. I certainly wouldn't drive a car in this condition and haven't played any pool since Friday morning.

I've got a doctor appointment tomorrow. Hopefully I'll find out more and lay out a plan for recovery.

Anyone else ever have vertigo?

yes about 10 weeks ago I had it real bad, and i was scared shitless, then a few days later same thing. no lasting effects. a few weeks later the 3rd mild session of it, i aint been playing either, Blood pressure is fine I weigh 240-245 i'm 6'1" tall, a little heavier than normal.

anyway after the 3rd time-first and 2nd were the worst, I went to the doc and got a MRI on my brain with contrast and had my ear's checked and sinuses. everything was OK. Thats serious stuff, the last thing anyone needs is a stroke or anryusm,

go to the doc, I had a friend die of one at a young age.

I have congenital defects in my brain(like we didnt know that-LOL) but nothing thats risky or threatening to my health.

I had it bad

I think I mentioned in The Green Felt Jungle I had some very severe bouts with vertigo in 1989 or so, for three or four months I would fall down every time I tried to get up from laying on the sofa. doctors all kept giving me all kinds of wrong diagnoses and it was really, really scary. I think the vertigo was caused by severe stress, you might try eliminating as many stressors as you can, good luck.

I had it once, doctor prescribed some Meclizine and that fixed it. Very disturbing thing to have.

I find it interesting how many of the users including myself thought they were having a stroke when they had Vertigo. That was my exact thought when I had my first attack, utter panic, total disorientation so I assumed it was a stroke. Why I assumed that I have no idea... Meclizine was the medicine I took as well.

Thanks for all the commiseration and kind thoughts.

I too thought it might be a stroke. But my wife had already done some research about testing for stroke (worried about her parents). It's a pretty simple three-step test but you need to have a second person to judge your responses.

The first test is a big smile, like the Joker in Batman. What you're looking for is a symetrical smile, even on both sides, not higher on one side than the other. The next is just simple questions "what's your name? what's my name? Sing the first verse of The Star Spangled Banner," etc. just to test memory/comprehension. Then lift both arms over your head and touch hands at the top like a jumping-jack.

If a person cannot pass any of these three tests, call 911 immediately.

Oddly enough, although they were unrelated, I had a stroke when I was in my "vertigo period". My neurologist assured me that the two had nothing to do with each other, and I had a vertigo attack about a week out of the hospital, which was my last one that I can recall.

Also, after my stroke, I would have passed those 3 tests.

Yes I have had two attacks of Vertigo. My wife helped me get back into the bed and if I laid perfectly still I could control the spinning to some degree. I was completely disoriented but OK sort of. She had to go to work and I assured her I'd get to the docs or die trying. About 4 hours later I was able to drive to my doctors office about a mile away from home. He was stunned that I drove and gave me some prescription sea sick pills and called in a prescription for more. Two days later I was Ok and back to work. Approximately a month later I turned my head in an odd direction and BAM it hit me again. The second time was not as severe and I was back to work in a day. Vertigo is NO JOKE they do not know exactly what causes it but suspect it has to do with loose particles in the inner ear. Supposedly they affect your balance and causes the attacks of Vertigo. If you look online there are some different head positional movements that may or may not help. A friends Mom had it so bad she was hospitialized for over a month and they had to keep her alive with an IV and feeding tube, she could not hold any soild food down for over a month. I REALLY wish you all the best I wouldn't wish Vertigo on anyone. The good news is once it's gone you'll be fine but it is scary as hell the first time through. I suffered my incidents over five years ago and have never had any since so there is hope... GOOD LUCK!!!!

This is a great thread, thanks so much for this, Vertigo affects lots of people.

I had and have still today the same exact symtoms of everything you are desribing, if first happen to me when i was 25 now iam 45 and it still happens from time to time, i had found out with my condition that it has alot to do with sudden head or eye movement for me.

The first time this happen to me, i was certain i had a brain tumor, i was bowling and bent over to hit the reset button at the same time i twisted my head very fast to the right to see if anymore pins had fallen down and bam it hit me and scared the living shit out of me.

It has stricken me while i was sleeping a couple of time, after each time i had flip my body over from side to side way to fast, now i sleep almost straight up in my recliner everynite and
for over 2 years and it has never happen once while sleeping like that.

I cant lay my head flat down never because it will happen, .

I dont know hom many time i was weight training, laying on the bench and it attacked me, now thats some real scary shit benching heavy weights and this happening to you.

I was never a big fan of it happening while I was driving.

I'm amazed at how many AZ people that are affected by vertigo. I too am affected by bouts of vertigo. This started about 20 years ago and the first time was the worse for me.

This season brings on allergies which brings on the episodes for me. The funny thing is, I didn't have allergies until a few years ago. I now think that I've always had allergies but only recently have been affected by symptoms other than vertigo.

There is a cold that's going around that has given vertigo to several people that i know including a coworker and my next door neighbor.

I hope you get over this soon and that it's something as simple as what I have had. I know vertigo can be far worse than I have experienced.

i have also experienced this phenomina

high board at the pool, no problem
bungee jump, i'm ok with that
skydiving, the g force turns me on

but... climb a ladder 8' feet off the ground and this happens

I have had it about 3 times. The 1st time, and the worst, I simply lay down on the bed and suddenly I was holding on for dear life afraid I was I was going to be hurled into the wall. Finally it stopped--- until I tried to move. I got disoriented but since I knew what it was, as my wife had had a terrible case of it before, I wasn't panicked, just sick.

My wife's case was bad. I'll never forget when hers started. I was sitting at my desk and she was in the doorway to the master bedroom which was one step lower than my office. We were talking when all of a sudden she went horizontal and all I saw was her feet as she disappeared from sight! I ran into the bedroom and fortunately she had landed on the bed. That was the beginning of a very scary week. Since then we have learned how to manipulate each others head to get the crystals back in place.

Hey Richie, This IS one of the great threads in a while here and shows one of the wonderful things that this website has the ability to do. The AZ folks, for the most part, are a helpful open group of people that are willing to open up about ourselves to each other and lend support when needed!
