i know mike katsaras real good
mike came to baltimore about 10 years ago so we meet in the poolroom in dundalk at this time there was tons of action in baltimore we made some scores nothing to big but we had a great time every time we went out to play pool we both liked todrink than mike had showed me this piece of old newspaper from vegas either from the 70s or 80s where he had won a world championships on the bar table in lasvegas the man was a top tier pool player and gentelmen so where ever you are might mike i love you brother richie
I ran around with Mike for quite a while in 79, he is a great guy, oh yeah, don't piss him off cuz when he takes off those big glasses you better run like hell !

it was the miller light world tavern bar table tourney or whatever in 82'. the player standings can be viewed on charles ursitti's website. search history in the appropriate year. he won 25 thousand and was quick to buy a new caddy but the way i hear it he was broke three days later and had to sell it. only a pool player!!!!!!!

There is a Tom Karabatsos here in the Chicago area. Saw him just last week.
you are wrong. it is spelled katsarus in the player standings from that 82' tourney. it is spelled katsaros in a reference to him in an 89' issue of pool and billiard. its greek as can be. also aka detroit mike, aka nutsy-as referenced in bobby cottons wonderful expose of life on the road-confessions of a pool hustler. i also exchanged a couple of emails with freddy the beard who said they were calling him pittsburgh mike. but there were 2 pittsburgh mikes ive heard. freddy said he couldnt handle mikes 9-ball game but freddy barbecued him in banks-go figure right! mike has told me stories about playing varner, danny d, etc etc. he was a super strong player and told me he ran 100 balls in straight pool the first day anyone told him how to play-thats pretty incredible.

I think Mike was from Washington, PA. I am 52 years old now and I remember Mike would come to play 9-Ball ring games at Pinky's Pool Parlor in Turtle Creek, PA from mid-70's to early 80's. Other players in those ring games were Davey from Somerset, Face, Putt, Jim Spinelli, Beast, Smitty, Danny Altamore, Ernie the Jeweler, Jack Bailey, Don Steele and many others. There were times I would leave the pool room at say 10:00 p.m. and come back the next day at 2:00 p.m. and they would still be playing. Mike was a very respected player back then and almost always won in that ring game. He still must be playing fairly well even now as I see he finished in Top 32 in Open Amateur last year at Valley Forge. Not too shabby.

Tom Karabotsas! He owns pool rooms in the Chicago area. Also plays pretty good.
thats the one. im gonna try to get down with him later today. he finished 8th/12th or something like that @ valley forge in his bracket-said he dogged a 9 straight in for the set or it could have been better. still plays real good despite hardly playing-he'll only get up for the cheese. a road player will come through here once in a while and he retires em. if they come back they run out the door as soon as his name is mentioned. coming up on 70 too. must have been ridiculous back in his prime.

artist as one could be. He would play anybody that stepped up and he played fearlessly. He would shoot at a white flag and usually got out.
His style was fast and straight forward and exuded nothing but confidence.
The same night he won the tournament he went to the Serene Room
(A big action bar at the time) and matched up and over the next several
hours blew most of his tournament winnings. I was around him quite a bit
back then and I never saw him get out of line or tush hog anybody. He
was always a gentleman and I hope he is doing well. His name comes up
quite often when we're telling war stories
