APA rank & innings

As far as individual skill level goes, I agree with you. Regarding the team handicap (the 23 rule) it is punishment. It forces teams to forfeit matches in many instances. It practically forces teams to sandbag to keep their team intact.

No, what it forces teams to do is to construct a team that is balanced with both higher and lower skill levels. If you have too many medium to higher skill level players, you are bound to run into 23-rule problems.

It is part of the deal when you play APA, so team captains need to plan for this issue. Complaining about the 23-rule when you knew about it coming in makes little-to-no sense. Cheating because of it is even worse.

I agree with you completely; however, better players can get around this easily enough by playing Masters where there is no handicap.

make sure you get your Mini Slam patch for the B&R and 9 ball snap in the same night

Most nights on the team I captain, we don't even hit 23. A lot of new players and players who are well established and won't ever be a sl6 or sl7. We are in last place. The team I took to Vegas had to be careful about who we played to stay within 23. This wasn't a problem in Vegas even after we had someone raised while there. There is a lot of versatility to be had by carrying a couple of low handicaps. We didn't go very deep in the Vegas tourney, but we got there.

I encourage my players to play their best pool. I don't want anyone laying down or padiing innings. Most APA players aren't good enough to be able to consistently pad innings and dog shots to keep the handicap down and then bring the game. Bad habits always surface at the most inopportune time. I want my guys going for the kill every rack.

Maybe that is how your team works. My team just plays by the rules. We have been in the playoffs almost every time and we have won 3 times.

We play hard and practice. We beat all the sandbaggers and we stick by the 23 rule. We don't forfeit any matches.

You don't need a team full of 6's and 7's to win. It is not about being a SVB, it's only about winning the match. Use the handicap system to your advantage. Use some strategy when posting players. You don't need a 7 to play a 7.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

If you don't like the handicap system, join a masters league where there is none.

What's your problem.............

(I bet you're a 4)

Thanks for the input / advice / knowledge ..

whammo57, I never said to be THAT good.. but, I would like to CHALLENGE you, considering people stand in line for hours to shoot pool with somebody as GOOD as YOU :killingme: :killingme:

Not trying to run you off..............

No one stands in line to shoot pool with me.

I am not that good..... not as good as I want to be anyways.

I am better than most but not as good as some.

I play my best all the time.

I used to rail against the 23 rule and sometimes think how it sucks that I can't play unless our 3 shows up some nights, but then I just remember this is a slop league, half of the players, it seems, have aluminum cues, there is a blond over there that I need to talk to and my beer is getting warm.

On Thursdays I drive 24 miles one way to play in a Masters league. They are stacked with world beaters and I love it. They usually kick my ass though.

I should start my own league in the fall.

More condescending tone being put out through your keyboard. My wife is a 3. I guess she ought to just give up on pool, eh???

You may or may not realize it, but with the short sentence in parantheses in the above quoted part of your post, you just insulted every person of skill level 4 and under.

Tap tap! Well said Dub.

I think the key is to have 8 players on the roster that are balanced across SL ranges. With that being said, it is good to have a low to mid SL rankings to give better flexibility in posting. In nine-ball, I play as an 8; the rest of the team is one 6, three 4's, two 3's, and one 2. So our posting is pretty simple.

I also agree with the Master's league comment. I would probably play that league if I did not travel so much for business - actually I would probably try to play a Straight Pool league. Right now, we play double jeopardy on Monday's, so it is easy to play.

I just checked our 9 ball rankings - 10 teams / 76 players. Only 18% of the players are 6 and up. SL3-5 represents 68%.
SL 1 - 2
SL 2 - 8
SL 3 - 20
SL 4 - 17
SL 5 - 15
SL 6 - 8
SL 7 - 4
SL 8 - 1
SL 9 - 1

the point is many apa players intentionally dump to keep rosters legit which sucks.

this is not the case on my team. my team went to vegas many moons ago, we finally had strong 4's and 5's who were on the border moving up and down. unfortuanatley in vegas they moved 3 players up, so when we came back, we were screwed with to many 5's and 6's. what makes it worse is when your ranked in vegas you're that ranking for life. on our team some deserved to go up, but some didn't. and after vegas it didnt matter how much they stank up the place, they were set at that ranking. we're all good friends who hang out, enjoy the drinking and comraderie, and we've stuck together, it's been 5 years since vegas, and i've been on the fence since, break up the team of friends, or join a team with a bunch of cheating a-holes. so far i've decided to keep the friendships, but some faces have changed since then, people have moved on. and im wondering if it's time to make a change myself.

so basically this is a wanted ad, im a lifetime sl6 with major back problems whos played in vegas but really shoots like a 4, I want to go back to vegas for free, and am looking for 7 cheating a-holes in the nyc area who want a free vacation where we can meet even bigger sandbaggin a-holes from tiny towns all across america at the fabulous riviera in las vegas.

isn't it funny how the team that wins is normally from a tiny town of inbreds.

i dont hate the 23 point rule, as it's supposed to be an amateur fun league, like bowling or darts. its a great idea, as most forms of governent are on paper, unfortunately human beings suck.

if you do cheat and get to vegas, dont bother going to the tournament, cause im sure you'll run into a bigger badder sand bagger and have a horrible time. we played pool everyday at 8am, and were in the shitty tournament room for 3 days straight till like 1 am - 3 or 4 am

post originator, the fact that u post here, makes me believe you want to play your best. dont worry so much about your team ranking, just have fun, play pool, make friends if your're if you're lucky enough to get to vegas, enjoy it, go out, have fun, f8ck whores. and play some pool...

I don't think you should consider any post coming from just an SL-6 in 8-ball anything to get your heart rate up.

Freddie <~~~ Just a zero

APA...lol ( not a fan of that league )

Anyways, congratulations of your game!
Just have fun and always play your best.

why do so many people that are not fans of the apa feel so inclined to read about and comment negatively about the apa.

i would never intentionally read a thread about the health benefits of spinach, more less post any comments on such a thread were many spinach enthusiasts would be communicating.

I think the best thing about masters is the format. Regular 9 ball (rather than points version) and 8 ball in a race to 7 no handicap.
No one complains about sandbagging or giving up wieght, just pool.

For the same reason that people who are not fans of a (insert your fav) aiming system feel compelled to dis on it. Really sad..... :barf:

and how often can folks keep ........ :deadhorse:

apa

The apa sucks theres no doubt about it!! Its a money making machine that doesn't promote pool it justs kills pool. doesn't pay to get better and the league doesn't want you to get better because better players question things and the APA don't like players asking questions. And there national payout is paythetic 25000 for a team of 8 to win it all. Thats a joke!!!
