I cannot tell a lie. The thought crossed my mind, as well. :embarrassed2:
I didn't see the match, but looking at who's in Darren's bracket on the B-side of the chart, it's not quite as tough as the A side. So Darren losing to Karl could be a good thing for Darren at this stage of the tournament. Maybe the two of them hope to meet in the finals.
I wonder if any savers have been made by any of the remaining 32 players. I don't see anything wrong with savers, personally. :smile:

Are you shocked that a pro beaten another pro 11-1? I'm really surprised that people who play pool still doesn't realize this, if the skill is close-enough, anybody can beat anybody with any given score, it doesn't mean anything specific. Thats pool, it has so many factors other than playing and skills.
Let me tell you a story from the old days, Back the early 90s in reno there was a big tournament, a very good match that I watched was between Nick varner and Grady Mathews, there Nick beaten Grady 9-0 and sent him home, one month later exactly at another big tournamnt in Vegas they drew each other again where Grady beaten Nick Varner 9-0. the same exact score but a different winner, can you see from this story what I'm trying to tell you here. pool is almost like poker.

It happens A LOT. Wouldn't be a bit surpised if DAZ actually did most of the work and several of the games that would have been on his side of the string were given away as two-ball tap ins. I just watched an old U.S. Open match on YouTube last night (CJ Wiley v. Earl) where CJ won something like 11-4...actual balls made count was almost 2-1 Earl, but he choked or got out of position on the 7 about 4 times in the match. It happens all the time. I'm much more impressed when a local talent or unknown who goes hill-hill or stays within two racks of a world beater. It's a great game and the final score line isn't as important as the win.
Funny, I almost watched that match last night too, but chose svb/ wang can 10b instead.
Don't blame you...that was one of my favorite blow outs (I've got it saved in iTunes), rare to see SVB on full tilt...a 21 year old Chinese kid who has no idea he's supposed to lose that match, he just calmly smokes the best player in the world!

but the odds of possibly the single best player alive on earth getting rocked 11-1???
not saying there was funny business, but its fishy, and its certainly not meant to be an assasination on one's character although people here seem to often take it that way
its also interesting to me how so many people are quick to disregard dumping theories when pool players the world over have been doing this forever at all levels across the globe, hell the UK snooker players with the legal betting over there have turned it into a frickin artform

the blowouts look more real to me
The blowouts look more certain to be real to me than the closer scores. If I were going to dump a match I'd make it pretty close, granted not coming down to the last ball! Maybe a two or three game loss though, not almost a whitewash.
When I started playing pool there was a player that had my number. I crushed the same people he lost to, sometimes the same night. I couldn't beat him. Could be something like that going on although I wouldn't think it with a player of Appleton's experience.
Not seeing the match I don't know how close the play actually was. Might have been like others have mentioned, Appleton pocketed a lot of balls but didn't close the games out. Football games are like that sometimes, a team is way ahead on all the stats but the one that counts, the score.
I'll have to have a lot more than the score to go on before I start wondering if this was a dump. Sometimes it just ain't your day!
