“The US in the 90s were the best in the world but in the last six or seven years the Europeans have got a lot better at safety play and are travelling and playing a lot now.

“In the last three or four years we’ve now become the best in the world"

The Europeans on paper have better players than the US and if you look at the major events, that proves it, so we’ve definitely levelled the playing field.

Not really sure what planet he's on since he got absolutely DESTROYED by Hatch in a ten ball race to 100 a year or so ago, as did Mika when he played Shane just a few months ago. Seems like the Euros aren't bad at the sprints, but they fall way short in the marathons. Standard.

So Appleton changed his grip, well Appleton grip this, the Americans are taking you and your sidekicks down. The Mosconi Cup will be where it belongs, in the Good Old US of A.

Appleton is referring to Lee Brett's "V". I know he and Lee were working together on that. I'm sure it helped him greatly, I know Lee helped me a ton while he was staying with me.

IMO the Phillipines and Taiwan must be wondering what kind of new drugs they are smoking in Europe. Neither the USA or Europe are the best in the world.

Yeah for sure. If Darren wants some more race to 100 action I'm sure guys like Yang or Alex P. are interested.

Appleton is a GOOFBALL let me tell u!! He has no shot with hatch or really anyone on the American team. Just watch and see what the American team does to them and then he can shut his mouth about how they r better players. If they r why dont he go and look at all the players stats and see who r the better players lmao!! Enough said! Mika and Ralph are GREAT players but the rest r just short stops!

appleton comments

i tell you what the europeans are so far behind as the being the top players. And if appleton wants to gamble with any american oon the mosconi team hes got action and in my opinion is the underdog, and if u bring the taiwanese or philipinos into this argument appletons comments make him sound like a fool. Tournaments don't show who the best players are, playing longer sets do!!

Try to show a little respect to your fellow pro... what a terrible post from a so-called top player..

Darren Appleton is World 10-ball Champion and US Open 9-ball Champion.

I agree, Roy. Put a cork in it, Ryan. Exuberance/patriotism is one thing; immaturity at the expense of your fellow pro is another.

The best thing that can possibly happen, is that the Europeans (and their fans) mouth off, meanwhile Team US (with the backing of their fans) quietly go about the business of defending their Mosconi Cup. No woofing, no posturing, no "elementary school playground" calling anyone out -- just a "here, let us show you who's the better team" exhibition.

Some advice for both Team USA and our fans, as I quote the great Teddy Roosevelt: "Speak softly and carry a big stick!"

The Europeans are tournament players while the Americans are gamblers.

Come on now Roy. Darren does gamble and quite a bit. Let's call a spade a spade.

You are spot on in this post. Darren is top shelf.

Darren Appleton is a champion that has succeeded on pool's biggest stages. As an ardent pool fan, his opinion is of interest to me, this one included. Maybe he's right. Tough call. Giving credit where credit is due to the Europeans, who are playing some great pool, the truth remains that in 2010:

1) Archer beat a strong international field into submission at Turning Stone.

2) Van Boening crushed Immonen in their high stakes ten ball race to 100 in NYC.

3) Hatch beat Appleton in their high stakes ten ball race to 100 in Las Vegas in May.

4) Van Boening and Pinegar met in the final at Valley Forge in a ten ball event in which most of Europe's elite played

5) At Derby City, Brumback won the bank pool, Frost won the one pocket and although Efren won the nine ball, Americans Rodney Morris and Jeremy Sossei were second and third.

Then again, the Europeans dominated at the World 14.1 Championships, with Ortmann and Immonen the two finalists and Appleton captured the US Open.

In short, the Americans are still fighting the good fight when they compete against Europe's best, and the fans who get to watch these matchups are the real winners. Oooh, Derby City just over a month away!

Pre-match woofing is common... and makes for good drama and ratings.

Look what it did for Ali (Cassius Clay).

One last thought... the cream will rise to the top.
