Archer v. Sigel: Who do you like?

Not a real match

Johnny Archer vs. Mike Sigel in a challenge match. It will be a race to 11. The game will be 9-ball.

The date is Friday, January 3, 2014, at 8 p.m., EASTERN STANDARD TIME.

The place will be at Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, Georgia.

It will be a great match from two legends.

Archer has the home-court advantage, but Sigel ain't going to lay down and play dead in this match. Should be a good one for sure!

I wish somebody would come with a two-shot/push-out format challenge match played by two players who know how the strategy works. That is something that may be interesting for those who have never seen that format. It would be an exhibition of shot-making skills instead of luck.

If I was a bookmaker, Johnny would be the favorite in this one.

Anyone who would bet on this match would be foolish. It's a promo for Sigel's new scheme, and it will be a close match to keep people watching and listening to the ads for the new league.

I didn't read where anybody was taking bets. ;)

I was just kind of getting a feel from AzBilliards forum members on who they think is the favorite.

Reading all the comments, it sure sounds like people are interested in betting.

You may have missed my point completely. Both guys want a close match, just as pro football hates blowouts because people change channels and miss the commercials.

This event is a promo for a pool league not a challenge match to prove anything.

You still haven't said who you like in this match.

If Archer were not involved with Sigel's new league, and this was a "real deal" match.. I'd like Archer by at 4 games, and I would prolly give three games for the cash, and fell I was stealing..

Given the unknowns here.. I STILL like Archer by 2, but won't bet on it.

Right after the IPT went bust....

Mike still has a gear if he can ever get out of neutral long enough to find it , otherwise its no contest
JA does not get beat at home

Someone I trust said that when he met up with Mike, he was hitting em' just like he did back when he was on top when playing on Simonis and modern equipment, that's why he didn't understand why Mike was pushing for nappy cloth on the IPT tables.

So Mike may still have a shot...

Playing at MBC is only a psychological advantage as Johnny mostly practices at home and not at MBC...

I wouldn't trust that fellow's opinion of Mike's play unless we was a terribly strong player himself. A lot of B level players can't tell the difference between someone like SVB and a regional champion.

?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!

Archer will outbreak Sigel all day long in 8 ball, so Sigel would be lucky to get 5 games in races to 8.

Sigel a favorite over Archer in BANKS???????

I know you like to be contrarian, Spider... But REALLY??? Sigel has never been known as a top banker, and Grady Matthews has often praised Archer's banking ability on older Accu-Stats videos..

Honestly, 14.1 is the only game Sigel has a chance in, and even in that, he will need 100% of his shotmaking ability from yesteryear, and that just ain't gonna happen.

Actually Mike was a great banker in his prime. He beat several bank pool players in the past. I know for certain he beat Tony Fargo even in banks for the cash. Based on your comments about Mike and other posts you made in the past, brings to me the conclusion that you're pretty hard to impress. We're talking Mike Sigel and you talk like he was some sort of overrated champion.

I'll second that motion

Please play the old and best way,the 2 shot shoot out rule. Rich

I'll second that motion - 'Two Shot Shoot Out' is the best rules (2Foul9Ball).......Mike and Johnny have played their share, and I'd "sweat" that match, you'd be sure to see some awesome shots.

When I see statements like this, I wonder how many people on here watched Archer play in the early 90's, or the ones who did, if they remember how Archer played back then.

I honestly believe that Johnny and Earl are two of the biggest reasons that Sigel retired in the first place. He knew he wasn't going to win any more 9 ball tournaments, at a minimum.. And he saw 14.1 was going out of style.

The Archer you see now pales in comparison to the Archer of the early-mid 90's. He was an absolute BEAST back then. This is the guy who put a thirteen pack on Bustamente, remember?

There was NOBODY outside of the Filipinos that was even a slight favorite over Johnny in 9 ball. Sigel won his 9 ball tournaments against players that were not nearly as strong in 9 ball as Johnny and Earl.

There was good reason for this, of course, as 9 ball was not really the tournament game of that time period. Sigel came up when tournaments were split between 14.1 and 9 ball, with the status leaning towards 14.1. He was simply the first guy to recognize that having a big, fairly controlled break was mandatory. Even then, Sigel's break was not as powerful OR controlled as Archer's.

Even an Archer who is getting a bit long in the tooth is WAY too much for Sigel at this point in his career, and that would be if Sigel had been competing regularly.. Being out of tournament shape? I'd expect Johnny to be at least a 4 game favorite in a race to 11, and that is actually giving a lot of credit to Sigel.. Great shortstops who kill their regional tours still get beat 11-4, 11-5 in tournaments by SVB/Archer, etc..

Sigel beat Archer in the semi-finals in 1993 in the US Open 9 ball. I believe Sigel retired shortly after that....Also Sigel won the Us Open 9 ball championship 3 times vs Archer's one time...Mike Sigel won 105 professional pool tournaments. I'm not sure of Archers total?

I'll take Archer by a slim margin.
With all those years of retirement, there is no way Sigel can be as sharp as would be needed to play tight with a world class player that is still active. No way. Prime to prime, if that were possible, might be another story. If fact, that would be extremely interesting to see.
The good natured exhibition feel of this match will probably keep either player from wanting to show up the other.
Both these guys have class.

Doesn't interest me .... However, a 14.1 Match, run to 150, best 3 of 5 games on a 5x10.
Now, you have my attention and I may just fly in for the Match.

This is definitely more a promo match than anything. And agree it will be a buddy buddy match.

Always a joy to watch Sigel play, regardless. He is not the boring robot player, like many these days. I think the doubters of Mike's ability as of late should ask Ortman, Parica, Mika, and others, how it was losing a match to a retired man in the 2011 World Championships.

But one set to 11 in a promo 9 ball set? I think any pro has a good chance against any other. Sigel is pushing what is it 61 now? That's quite a spot. :)

I wouldn't bet on Sigel against ANY modern champion, in ANY game.

Is Archer a "modern" champion? What is the last major event with a world class field he has won?

I like Archer in this because 9-ball is his best game, it is in his home room, and he is more active and competes. But I would not say he is a modern champion any more then Sigel is at this point.

I think Mike would have a better chance in straight pool, in his prime i might take Mike, but now you gotta like Archer, two very class acts though, both great players. I remember my buddy telling me that out of like 120 times in the finals Mike wins like 113 of them,he was a great hot seat player. He used to be my favorite player when he played, very smooth, and a true class act. All the older guys were classy players, accept Earl and Mataya, they both give pool a black eye for sportsmanship, but entertaining to watch...

I'm picking Cap'n Hook. I think Archer doesn't really show up unless there is a fat stack of cash involved even if he is in his own house. If there is undeclared action involved, we will find out really fast.

BTW, not sure about when this match was, but here is a preview of what may come:
