Are Air Barrels ever justified?

It came to my attention that some posters are trying to justify air barrels being shot in some circumstances. If a person loses a couple of thousand and then shoots an air barrel for the last $500 set, is it then justifiable? How is this different than someone shooting an air barrel for the first $500 game or set? You are still basically taking a shot at winning money while knowing that you can't pay if you lose. It is the same as stealing is it not? Discuss.

I don't think it is every justified. the guy just has a much better chance of getting away with it - if say you took the guy off for say 3k and got air barrelled you for the last 500. You wouldn't be as upset as if you won the first set and didn't get paid anything. IMO

Who

Well i want to ask a question?? how long have you been playing pool, cards, or any gamble?? have you never been airballed??im 70yr and yes i have been clipped a few times!!!

I agree, but people that think its ok just because you have paid some already are on crack. What if I went to my mortgage company and told them I didn't want to pay this month because I had paid every month for the last few years? You think they'd mind?

Stick, you know that I've been playing pool, cards, golf, and gambling since I was a kid. Hell, you saw me gambling on the golf course when I was 12 or 13 years old. And, yes I've been air barreled. I also shot one at some guys on the golf course along with my partners one time when I was 17-18 years old because we knew they had no chance. Does that make it right? I don't believe so.

How about if your opponent owes your buddy $x, you play him for $x, lose and tell him he is off the hook to your buddy?

NEVER - and until the entire pool world learns this, pool will never evolve.

To justify that you have lost a certain amount of money and now get your free shot is ridiculious. To justify it by saying it was like a walking stick, is ridiculious.

It is total disrespect to the other player.

as long as your buddy is ok with it and you intend to pay the buddy.

That is business between buddies, not the winner...

So it is agreed: Air is sometimes OK?;) :D ;)

Its never a good deal!!!

I dont think it's cool at all. No matter what kind of score you make off of someone. What if you play good all night and deserve to win and your opponent shoots the $500 air barrel and wins. Then he comes back to get even or beat you. Now if you find out he was shooting the air barrel you would be hot. So what is the difference in making a score. None. If he lets you know that he is short and you decide to let him play and if he loses you agree to let him pay at a later time then i think thats different. Jut my 2 cents

In the early years, it was almost accepted. I've been on both ends of it.
Although never for the kind of $$$$ you are talking about.
In high $$$ races,(or even by the game) anyone who doesn't post up, WILL get airbarrelled eventually. Most pool player's have a slightly different code of ethics than the rest of the world, or so it seems. JMHO

Wasn't McGoorty who said the true test of your game was playing on nerve alone with no cash?

It is if your buddy agrees to stake the game or you are paying him.

if your buddy knows that you are playing the guy and if you lose then you'll pay the buddy then I see nothing wrong with it. It is a way for the buddy to get his money for sure.

yep

This thread isn't about Southpaw. Everyone here knows that Southpaw is a good friend of mine. I was just wanting to get everyone's thoughts on whether air barrels were ever justified since some posters said that they were ok if you had already been paid some.

What if your buddy doesn't know you are playing the dude? I fail to see how that has any effect on the to-be-aired party?
