At our Monday night APA 8-ball league this week, one of the guys on the team was bragging about his wife, who is also on the team and a SL2, that she had won a singles board on the previous Saturday night, qualifying her for the regional singles tournament. Then I heard that the next night they had another singles board at the same bar and another of my lady teammates, a SL3, had won it and also qualified. When I congratulated the first lady on her winning and subsequent qualification, she confided to me that all the other players in these single boards had "thrown" their matches against them to allow them to qualify  . Now, in our league I have never once seen any of my teammates "dog" a shot to run up their innings (sandbag), nor have I ever seen one commit a foul of any kind without telling their opponent. I have always enjoyed playing on this team for this reason. I always play fair and I expect my teammates to do the same. But after hearing about this singles board fiasco, I have lost some respect for some of these people. It was a blatant case of cheating IMO. Do you agree with this assessment, or in my naiveness is this standard procedure in your area? What do you think I should do? What would you do? I can tell you this, I'm not feeling good about my teammates right now  !!!

Never heard of people losing to send someone to APA regionals, but I'll ask this;

Why bother even going if you can't win locally, and then go to the Regionals, where you are likely to encounter SL2s who shoot like SL4s?

In general, every time you play, your intention should be to win every game, every match. If you choose to lose intentionally, you run the risk of serious consequences.

In league competition such as APA qualifier boards, these matches are official. The results are used for handicapping purposes. These losses your teammates are accummulating will help keep their own ratings low. Also, it should be noted that every other person who plays in the Regionals had to actually win a qualifier.

There is no doubt this is underhanded. I understand that your teammates may be very eager to see these women play in the regionlas at the s/l 2 & 3 where they'll be seperated from higher ranked players but frankly, they should earn their post.

X2, me thinks they be cheatin....

You got ph #'s for these two....I usually do well with women that have low moral standards ;)

why would anyone wake up early on a weekend (thats when the local quifiers in my area are), and pay $15 to throw a match to a person that will probably not have a chance at the regional?
just curious, exactly what do these girls look like? they must be hot.:D :D :D

"Winning" those singles boards isn't going to do those two women any good, I imagine. Not when they have to go to the local larger singles regional touranment, where they'll be playing all the OTHER nearby singles boards winners. Those folks aren't going to throw matches for your teammates.

On top of that, if what one poster said is true, and that the singles board match results are rolled in with normal weekly match results, then other folks throwing matches to your teammates will just mean they each have several wins on their record - which, depending on the math etc, could move them UP a handicap value.

Honestly, I don't see all these folks throwing their singles board matches - isn't it generally $15 to play in one of those? Why would seven other people each toss in $15 just to throw the match? Doesn't make sense. Maybe they didn't say "throw" but "throw away", i.e. their opponents just played horribly?

LOL. Being a sandbagger. Is starting to be a art form.

Starting:confused:

Have you ever been to APA or TAP nationals? See or at least get a first person account from someone you can trust, and get back to me.

Its a question of whether or not this comprimises you morally / ethically or if you're just afraid that you may get into trouble.

If its A, then it shouldn't really affect you AT ALL as this is something that happened outside the confines of your team. If others felt they should ump to allow your team-mates to progress, that's their issue.

If scenario B is what bothers you, I got news for ya... the APA doesn't care. Plain and simple. I played in a regional singles tournament earlier this month and I was accused by one of my opponents of sandbagging (and cheating) several times over. So, I quit. I made it to the hill, then to the 8, then fired the cue ball into the pocket just to spite her. I let her win to see how far she could get on her own (not too far apparantly. She lost the next round. Way to go Allison.)

Then, I played in a 9 ball singles board later that day and told the TD as well as two refs AND two league operators that for me to play in a 9-ball singles board as a 5 is VERY unfair. I told them to bump me up to an 8 or a 9 because I would be damned if someone else was gonna call me a sandbagger and a cheater. But they said no. If I'm rated a 5, I'll play as a 5. I told them again to have someone watch my matches and then reconsider because people will complain. They actually said they didn't care!!!

So I played and I won. And by some very LARGE margins. And guess what... still a 5! So basically, if you're ethically concerned, get past it. Not tryng to be a dick but it really has no bearing on you or your team. If you're worried there may be some repercussions, rest assured, there won't be. Ratings are calculated by a foolproof equalizer handicapping system (Laughable. The system sucks.)
and 75% of the league operators out there care only about 1 thing : collecting their dues.

My advice: quit the APA.

Bought in

They might have just bought their way into the next round. 8 x $15 = $120. That's not the first time it's been done. Those other players might not have even been there?

League is about sand-bagging and cheating. That's what it is. Get used to it or quit but make no mistake that's what league is about. (Sorry to be so completely negative regarding leagues and I suppose it's not right or fair to label them ALL but such has been every league experience I've had. Ater I served on the rules and handicapping committee for a while I discoverd that the cheating is a part of those governing bodies as well so I finally reached the point where I couldn't take it anymore. )

No disrespect, but I'm not buying it. Your saying 8 people spent $120 dollars and the better part of an afternoon colluding together for one person to qualify for another qualifier. This was done twice?

Three people would have to win the first match and then dump the second, and one person would have to win two and then dump the third? All of this going toward your SL rating?

Why?

I have been playing apa the past 2 sessions.. well we were tied for 1st place last week and came up against the other #1 team.... I told their captain after watching them that they deserved an oscar for their performances... talk about scum,, well i came up against a 3 that i have matched up with before at another room, well i thought we hasd lost the prior 2, and they had a handicap limit forfeit for the 5th match and I kinda gave up on the hill hill match since i tought we would lose the night... Figured a dose of their own medicicne... guess what if i had just finished the match and won we would have had a 1 game lead over them for 1 st place... their sandbagging got to me mind!!!! and i dumped.....

Oh well i am still slotted #1 in regional top gun 6&7's

Joe

people buy boards around here....seen it done....all the time if it isn't full....one person pays the 120.....goes to regionals and gets destroyed.....happens all the time

Agree totally...

the APA contrary to many players thoughts was designed to be a fun environment and to promote family friendly pool environment! I have played APA since 1983 and have never thrown a match to help anyone or myself! I have a team now and I stress to my players to have fun and just play their games ! We are #1 in our Division Atlanta out of Mr Cues by far for this session so it is very possible to play good clean pool and also do well! :)

Yeah, but if you buy a board you get all the benefits of going and participating in the Regional Tournament. If you're fortunate enough to win there, then you may be able to reap some reward at the big event in Las vegas.

Buying a board is about the same as paying a bigger entry fee, like some other tournaments do it. Basically the exact same thing.

At issue in this thread, is that approximately 14 people (7 for each board) bought into a tournament and decided that they'd all sacrifice their own chances for the benefit of some wife and her friend.

All sounds highly suspect and very unlikely. Maybe when you're dealing with anything on large scales (since it's such a big league) anything is possible, but still doubtful. Add to the fact that the original poster is relaying a 2nd hand accounting of the incident / rumor, and so we're thus getting a 3rd hand version.

The whole thread sounds quite bogus!

I assume this is some other league than APA so what is buying a board? or is this just another terminology for the singles qualifier where you can enter as many times as you like?
