It has come to my attention via Patrick Johnson's recent thread that more and more idiots now have access to the internet, thus precipitating flame wars and other behavior typical of idiots.

In an attempt to reverse this trend, I offer the following photo taken yesterday during a day trip to the new Whitney museum.

Man Ray, La Fortune, 1938, Oil on Linen.

P.S. If you have to ask why there are no pockets, you are an idiot and need not reply.

The 3 balls defy gravity.

I haven't changed my number. ;) it's still 867-5309

hehehehe - green to you!
i see Wilson let you out of NPR? CUEBUDDY & i are conference-calling CJ in the other thread, if you'd care to join us since you're up?

You're calling me? I haven't changed my number. ;) it's still 867-5309 (it's also on the wall)

according to some biotch named Jenny @ 3am, you don't know what you're talking about!
(however, i think LAMas & she are working a game)

Well, if you go to the link I provided with the audio clip, they basically say they have no clue what the hell this painting is supposed to mean.

I was about to write, "I don't get it," but now I can't!

Freddie <~~~ hooray for Art History Teachers!

That's because they weren't pool players. The colors of the clouds represent the game of pocket billiards (multi colored balls) as the storm on the horizon about to overtake the three cushion billiards scene by storm and become the game of choice. Before 1938, 3 cushion was the rage and the artist knew there was an impending takeover.

That's, of course, is my take on interpretation.

It seems like the colors of the clouds are supposed to represent pool ball colors... if so, he forgot to add a brown and black cloud.

An astute observation.

So, would you stop on the 1-cloud and combo the 2-cloud into the 3?

Shouldn't all 3 balls be different colors or is there a carom game that has two of the same ball?

I think the table pointing at the sky means that billiards is a game for the heavens. With the balls rolling down to the ground if not propelled by the cue upward, that means that the game of bowling is for the devil and you should play billiards instead.

The art, like the game, requires "creativity, intelligence, and a playful approach to problem solving" (from the audio). That doesn't sound very "dumbed down" to me. Maybe there's hope for the pool world after all. :grin-square:

Cute post,
Dave

Well done!

I like it,

PS: Now when I look at the painting, I can't help but hearing the song from "Music Man." There is definitely trouble in River City ... and "pool" definitely starts with a "p" that rhymes with "t."

Are we the only ones that noticed this?... The table is tilted more than the natural "flat" angle towards the horizon yet the balls are stationary... It reminds me of the symbolism shown in the old Batman show from the 60's where every time they showed a villain in their lair the screen was always tilted to show they were "crooked"... Does it mean pool and billiards are crooked? Don't know just an observation...

I'm going to call the local Mensa group to see if they will hold their meetings at a local pool hall.

Doing my part.

Where the heck is Black-Balled when ya need him .... Walter ! Oh Walter ! Wherefore art thou ???? Whatfore this art is ????

unsigned (Dave aint admitting to calling out Walter)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.....
...well, not in this genre...
....they usually need several thousand words to justify this art.

I'm putting it in the 'king's new clothes' category.

I have a t-shirt w/this painting on it that was being sold many years ago by the San Jose Museum of art. I love it. The message is simple:

3-cushion is the cuesport closest to reaching heaven. A game for the gods!

Did the t-shirt have a pocket?
