Avatar Pics Discussion

I feel you galipeau, but it's a lost cause.

This discussion comes up regularly every few months,
and the bottom line seems to be: You can ask people politely to not use this type of avatar,
and give good reasons, but about 100% of them will ignore you and keep doing it
because they feel there's nothing wrong with it.

The guys who run the website are well aware of them and have never removed
one, to my knowledge... maybe it happened before with something really graphic.
I agree with you that it creates an atmosphere that might make females feel less welcome.

Personally what bothers me the most is that it gives the forums a real back-of-the-garage feel,
it makes the forums feel like a low-class place full of dumb people. I know there are some good
posters who have these avatars, they're not all dumb, but seeing dozens of bikini girls
absolutely creates that vibe that this place is full of droolers who go HURRR TITTIES!!!

We talk a lot about injecting a little class back into pool but I guess this is the audience.

Well the simple truth is that the membership here IS an actual representation of this internet slice of the pool world. This is how some of them think and feel. Forcing anyone to change their avatar will not change that person.

It doesn't bother me either way but some of the defenses are pretty funny. If I wanted to glorify women I would have a picture of my wife in her scrubs or maybe my daughter in her cap and gown. Pretty sure none of those people would have a picture of their own child in a G string spread eagle on a pool table as a glorification of what they hope for their future. :)

Says the guy with a ridiculously enormous dollar sign hanging from his neck and a freaking FEATHER IN HIS HAT.

If my avatar offends you, then you probably should live under a rock. Every sport on the planet is at some point marketed with the sex appeal approach. Pool is no different. If you are offended by a photo, you must not feel very comfortable in a pool room, where women (at least in my area) dress to impress, players gamble, curse, drink, and do very very (apparently to you) inappropriate, sinful, bad things.

I will have my eye on you...soon.

I.q.

As Mr. Dixon was reflecting on my I.Q. in a different thread, I concur with his commentary ( not withstanding the rest of our fair state). I did not know what an avatar was until I joined this community.

I believe my avatar may have been offensive back in the late 50's when the Runyon musical was made into a movie. :boring2:

I think that sums it up pretty well.:thumbup:If people have a problem with someones avatar, what happens when these same people go to a bar, a pool hall, or your local state or county fair and girls are wearing short skirts and low tops? There are far more sexually explicit things on prime time tv than on the avatars here.

I think it was an "8" with some vertical lines in it, not a dollar sign. Not sure about the feather. In the ghost nipple avatar thread, Creedo said that was Shane VanBoening ??

I second the motion

I'd like to post something and hopefully open up this discussion with the intent to improve this site for all users. I would like to ask people who post on this thread to avoid childish name-calling, ad hominem arguments, and general not-niceness. I'm also notattempting to establish a moral high ground. Hopefully we can all open up some thoughtful conversation!

Here's my food for thought:
A thing that has been on my mind for a while now is the pictures that some use as avatars here on AZ. There are a few people on here that use borderline pornographic pictures of women as their avatar. My question is whether or not this is conducive to a friendly environment for all pool aficionado's. Personally, these images don't bother me, but it's awkward at times when a friend or girlfriend see's me scroll through a post and there's a half naked woman on a pool table...

I'm not posting this for me though. Think of how many female pool players that might not want to engage in buying, selling, or discussing pool in general due to images on this forum. I want to be clear that my personal stance is not one of regulation and censorship... I don't believe in controlling anyone personal experssion, I just want to start this discussion and maybe it will lead to some good.
Exactly lets not look like dumber than we is

Ok...Eliza says we can tone it down for a while to make others happy. She is good at playing nice most of the time....other times she is a very naughty girl that needs to be punished to which I am forced to take care of that tough task.

Robert's rules

Somebody tell me I'm wrong here:

Can the guy who makes a motion also "second" that motion ?:grin-square::grin-square:

It's not that it offends me, I'm not uptight about nudity, I watch porn and say "motherfuсker" all the time
just like any other red-blooded american.

But just imagine if someone new scrolled through a typical AZ thread and saw a dozen
T&A avatars. Their first impression is probably going to be "well this place isn't exactly
loaded with rocket scientists."

That's what bugs me, that the site feels like the back office at a truck stop, just kinda low-class.
And choosing a nudie pic doesn't show a lot of brains or imagination. The avatar is a chance
to say something about yourself. It's attached to every single word you speak on AZ.
You don' t have anything more interesting to say than "I like boobs"?

BTW, yes, that is shane. It's meant to be humorous... the thought of this clean cut guy
nicknamed "the south dakota kid" dressed like a pimp just cracked me up one day so I photoshopped it.
Maybe my sense of humor is dumb, too.
But at least I put some effort into it and found something to say about pool.

Well my wife has happened to notice some of the avatars in the past and mentioned them to me  I just told her the way it is.

Personally, I don't think they allow any nudity on them, but granted there are some pretty skimpy bikinis and stuff. However this is nothing you wouldn't see flipping through the TV channels in my opinion.

It'd be easier if we all just used our autographed pictures of Billy Jack as our avatar. Surely everyone has one of those?

Creedo: I just thought that was you in your avatar, thinking, wow, this guy holds a cue like he knows what he is doing.

I had no idea it was Shane. :)

ScottK: Nice stroking. I need to work on that.

I think there is an old saying about judging a book by its avatar.
