Chris, Speckled sounds like a good name for that figure. I have 2 more pieces that are stronger in figure. They will need to be cored though. After the cue was finished I discovered the forearm wasn't as stiff as I would have liked.

It's hard maple. It has been affected by bugs, then healed. It's very, very similar to massur birch but only hard maple instead. It's pretty rare. I call it "wormy" maple. Here's a pic of some used as a handle with koa forearm/butt:

The only place I have seen this wood is in UP Michigan. I search for it every time i'm up there, usually only finding a peice or two. It's not uncommon figure in the lumber world, but quite uncommon to find it in hard maple.

2008 Super Expo Cues

Here is a link to the cues we got together for the super billiards expo.

My new program is making the pictures really large and I am not sure how to shrink them in order to post them. Feel free to load them over here if you can make them smaller. I loaded one picture on here and it came in huge so I deleted it.

Unique Jump cue made by Craig at Full Splice billiards

The following cue was made for a very Special customer. The cues forearm was made from a broken un-repairable Helmstetter cue. The section behind the forearm is made from Macasar Ebony, all White on the cue is Walrus Ivory Tusk. The rings are a plastic Pearlized material and the cue has a 3/8-10 pin. The cues shaft is flat laminated with a solid Phenolic Jump ferrule.

I think I have only seen one jump cue prettier than yours, and it was actually a Titlist conversion jump break cue with MOP inlays kinda similar to a Bushka model Richard Black. Keep turning them out (pun intended!).

Craig, be careful with that walrus ivory. Alaskan natives are the only people allowed to use it or market it. It can be resold by anybody so long as the original Alaskan native artist's signature is still present. If it's preban then it's legal just like elephant, but pre-ban is not white. Walrus ivory turns yellow/brown pretty quickly, and white stuff is a dead giveaway that it's fresher than 1972. I know you can buy it on ebay & such, but that doesn't make it legal. I could care less, and am not taunting you, just warning you of the dangers. Get caught with it by fish & game, and you'll do prison time with HUGE fines.

My wife is a native Alaskan artist & I have her do any of the walrus ivory work in my cues, and even then it makes me nervous. I build cues with fresh walrus ivory, we can even legally buy them with tags from the hunt, but will not sell a cue with it in there. Your best bet & most legal route is to pick up old ivory artifacts such as sled runners & spear harpoons, and use that stuff. Most of it is very old.

Thanks very much Scott for the kind words. I am currently building a couple more of them. However, I only make them to order becuase of the price. The cue pictured and others like it sell for almost as much a Good Sneaky pete, and many people would not want to spend that much for a jump cue.

Thanks again Scottt

Thanks very much for the information, I am located in Washington State and there is an abundant amount of this material around. The peice in question came local Dentist, who got a Tusk from his Father In law who had it since the 1950's. The Gentleman collected different Animal Tusks due to the fact that he was also a Dentist.

I am great full for your insight on the subject and I will keep that information in mind if I ever buy any Walrus Ivory anywhere.

Thanks again Craig
