AzBilliards Katrina Relief Auction

I am wondering if anyone would support the idea of a raffle.
I know a lot of the Azers are saving up for the US Open and all the coming events so may be we are all a bit tight at the moment.
Raffle tickets will be cheaper to buy than placing a bid in an auction.
Besides, I am hoping since it is cheaper to buy a raffle ticket, may be we can get more Azers to participate so the amount we get at the end will be bigger.
The winner can win an item worth much more than what he/she has paid for and the proceed is being put to a very meaningful charity.
Also, this way, Azers can buy raffle on many items he/she likes instead of tie up all the money on one or two bids.
If each Azers spends $5 to $10 on a raffle tickets, we can get from $5000 to may be over $20,000 since there are some 3000 members on this forum.
I will trust Mike to do the raffle at the end and then the persons who donate the items can just ship the items to the winners directly. This should also make it easier for Mike.
I think this would generate more money for the charity and the winners of the raffle will get the best deal on billiard items.

Great idea, I think quite a few people would participate in that.

Like the idea of a raffle....could raffle off some cues. Would think it would get most all of us involved and raise much much more money than the cost of the cues. Might even get a maker or two to donate a cue so all procedes go to help.

Just a thought, see that nipponbilliards has already promised a cue....

I have two people who have purchased vBucks already. Both of them purchased more than 500. I had originally thought that people would just spend $5 for 500 to get them back into the betting action.

The more I think about it though, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to buy more than 500. It is all for a good cause after all.

Thoughts?

Mike,
I will see what I can get from the Amateur Players and the tour has already agreed that the raffle for all the tournaments that we do this weekend will go to the hurricane relief. Thanks for your help too. I am originally from Louisiana so it really got to us. All of our family got out safely and we thank God for that.

Great Idea, but please consider Senting the Money to the Local Salvation Army in the Katrina Area. ;)

As the RED CROSS seem alway to Hold Back donations, for other projects.... Like 14-16%

I concur with that sentiment 100%. The Salvation Army does a better job. My mother never let me forget they helped clothe and feed her when she was a child during the Great Depression when nobody else was there. The Red Cross seems to show up for these high visibility things, but they kind of overlook the people struggling day to day.

But back to Mike's original proposal. Excellent idea Mike, I've no items to offer for auction, but I'd be willing to bid or just make a donation. I think we should all give what we can where we can. If you're in a position to give of yourself and not just money I think that is even more noble. However, if like me you can only give money remember, "there, but for the grace of God, go I".

I think you should also open it up to those of us that re not v-broke. I didn't purchase because it would "reset" my v-cash to 500...that means I would pay to lose v-bucks and that would be v-dumb....

I went straight to V-bookie and dropped all my v-cash on the North V. South to empty my v-pockets before scoring some more v-bucks from Mike :)

I don't see them in my v-wallet though

I started contacting people last night and the responses are coming in already. We already have donations of items coming in from ...

Predator Cues
Platinum Billiards
Matchroom Sports
Bob Henning - Bebob Publishing
Ewa Laurance - WPBA
Joe Tucker
Keith McCready
Lara Rossignol

I still have quite a few emails to send out to people looking for items. Anyone who has an item they would like to donate, please drop me an email at housepro@azbilliards.com

Does anyone know the legalities of holding an online raffle for any of the items we are getting?

Mike

This is Arizona's Raffle Law (since that's where you are):

B. An organization that has qualified for an exemption from taxation of income under section 43-1201, paragraph 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 or 11 may conduct a raffle that is subject to the following restrictions:

1. The nonprofit organization shall maintain this status and no member, director, officer, employee or agent of the nonprofit organization may receive any direct or indirect pecuniary benefit other than being able to participate in the raffle on a basis equal to all other participants.

2. The nonprofit organization has been in existence continuously in this state for a five year period immediately before conducting the raffle.

3. No person except a bona fide local member of the sponsoring organization may participate directly or indirectly in the management, sales or operation of the raffle.

4. Nothing in paragraph 1 or 3 of this subsection prohibits a licensed general hospital or a licensed special hospital that is exempt from taxation of income under section 43-1201, paragraph 4 or section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code from contracting with an outside agent who participates in the management, sales or operation of the raffle if the proceeds of the raffle are used to fund medical research, graduate medical education or indigent care, provided that the raffles are conducted no more than three times per calendar year. The maximum fee for an outside agent shall not be greater than fifteen per cent of the net proceeds of the raffle.

Now, to get around this, I would use the follwoing line "Purchase 500 v-cash(or whatever) and receive a free chance to win {fill-in blank}"

FWIW,

Jim

You shouldn't have any problems as long as you are not making a profit. I know as an auctioneer that the states I do business in (Md & Pa) pretty much have a blind eye for charity events (unless they feel something shady is happening - which it's not). I don't see where you would have any problems with it.

Make a bet, then your balance will be below 500. ;)

OK, I changed the wording on the vBucks purchase. You now get 500 vBucks for every $5 you spend.

I also like the idea of the raffle attached to the vBucks purchase. One entry in the raffle for each 500 vBucks purchased.

We have a cue coming in from one of the companies mentioned earlier and I think we will raffle that off first. I just want to clear it with the company that they don't mind their cue being raffled instead of auctioned.

Mike

FYI, we now have confirmed donations from (in no particular order)...

Joe Tucker
Tiger Products
Predator
Platinum Billiards
Bob Henning
Hustlin USA
Matchroom Sports
Lara Rossignol
Rodney Morris
Keith McCready and Jennie Malloy
Ewa Mataya
Ron Hamner Jr

I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg though.

I think a straight forward raffle is the best idea of all the ideas mentioned so far.I think the SIMPLER this thing is kept, the better.

List all the various prizes up for winning by all the various donaters.Have one BIG grand prize that will get all of us pool junkies salivating ,fantazing and dreaming of winning.Follow that up with at least two decent consulation prizes (or more), set a ticket price and let her fly.

If tickets are $20 apiece, a person can buy as many tickets as he wants or as he can afford. At a $20 buy in, EVERYONE will be able to afford at least one ticket and have a chance to win.

Others will be able to kick in $100,$200 or more and won't look at it as 5,10 or more chances to win. they'll look at as donating to a worthy cause and see winning some pool stuff only as a bonus.I think that, that should be the spirit of this whole thing.

If tickets start at $20, I'm willing to get the ball rolling and buy $100 (5 raffle tickets) worth. If all the money goes to the victims (which it will) EXCELLENT!!!If I win some pool prize along the way,it's just icing on the cake.
RJ

ps. God bless all of those who have already stepped up to the plate to donate.
