A very Special congratulations to my great friend John Schultz, aka "Johnnyshakes" who successfully completed his MBA yesterday. He did this while working full time and supporting himself. Johnny has been very dedicated and made a lot of sacrifices in this outstanding accomplishment.
Johnny is also a great pool player and has managed to keep his pool game at a high level though all this hard work that he has endured. Pool players beware he has a little more time on his hands to play now and will no longer be spotting the world 3 semesters a year.

Well done Johnny!! Congratulations!!

Congratulations Johnny. I got my MBA 16 years ago, and I know how much time and money goes into it. I finaly paid it off about 2 years ago.

9: You just made me feel a little better about my non-educated pool ass.:grin-square:

Good on ya, JohnnyShakes. What are you gonna do with all your free time now?!?!

That is quite an accomplishment and one you should be very proud about. Now for the doctorate in pool!

BTW, what's the degree in?

Conratulations Johnny! You must be feeling really good. Great accomplishment!

All the Best,
Abe - i4pool

Thanks everybody

Thank you for all of the kind words everyone.

Ridinda9- I definitely won't be working on the drinking problem tonight. Gotta celebrate.

Black-Balled- I will be splitting my free time between worrying about how I am going to pay for this degree, basking in the glow of accomplishment of actually finishing it, studying for the CFA exam in June and, of course, playing as much pool as I possibly can. Oh yeah, chasing girls, too.

Dogs- An MBA by definition is a Masters in Business Administration. My focus in the program was Finance and Accounting. The next step for me now is to prepare for the CFA exam so that I can hopefully convince an investment bank or asset management firm to take a chance on hiring me as an analyst.

Thanks again everyone, and I hope all the rolls in life go your way.

Doh, :grin-square: But of course. My degree is in business. For some reason I was just thinking masters degree. Total space out. :o

Now that he has his MBA it appears as if he will be working on his PHD.....

Pool Hustling Degree.

Nice accomplishment.

Congratulations!

Ph.D., C.Phil, M.A., B.A.

This maybe a touch nit-picky... but after the PhD, isn't the rest implied? I suppose you could clarify between a Bachelor/Master of Science versus Arts, but at that point, who cares?

M.S Biology, B.S Psychology... devoted husband to

M.D. Ob/Gyn, B.S Pre-med

Lol, oh the aires...

Lastly... congrats!!!

It's actually possible to get a Ph.D. without having a C.Phil. or an M.A. degree.

That's true. As far as I can tell it happens more in the medical sciences (PhD programs housed in medical schools for example) otherwise Masters (thesis) is usually a part of the PhD track (dissertation). I have just never seen any PhD put the rest of (non-certification school) as a part of a title :) MDs often put things like MPH (Master in public health) if they have it or any organizations/affiliations they are involved in. A PhD w/o Masters really has the same credibility as one with (so the distinction to me seem irrelevant).
What is a C.Phil? I'm assuming it's not America, I know English/European degrees can sound a little different. Doctor of Science/English/whatev. rather than everything being housed under "philosophy".

A C. Phil. is a Candidate's Degree, which you can get when advanced to candidacy for the doctorate. I only know of two schools in the U.S. that offer them (UCLA and UC-San Diego), although there may be more.

Aren't students typically doctoral candidates when the complete their Masters? In the program I was in (which didn't offer a Masters en route to PhD), candidacy was considered after proposal was accepted (which is typically when Masters is awarded). So C.Phil and passing Masters would both equate to being a PhD candidate.
So my question is, what is the difference between acquiring Masters in a PhD program, and being a doctoral candidate?

I don't know about "typically," but in my program there were a few requirements beyond the Master's before being advanced to candidacy, including passing the oral exam from your doctoral committee in order to be advanced to candidacy, which sometimes also requires completing a fairly substantial amount of work on the dissertation itself.
