Be careful with Matchroom Sport

I for one greatly appreciate the MC
Event. But would like to see Americans
Be able to choose their own team
Completely.Someone else picking our team
To me makes no sense

Matchroom to the top 5 in points, cant get any more fair then that, IMO.

If you left it up to the players to choose it would come down to who got together to make a deal and how much money they could chop up.

Everyone posting that Matchroom doesn't get pool on TV in the USA is misinformed. You need to check your facts before you start bashing companies. Fox Sports buys the Mosconi programming along with various other programs they produce. It's not live coverage like Sky Sports does but we all know that getting pool on a national US network LIVE is a far fetched idea and not coming anytime soon. Matchroom's pool events air on around 20 different networks in over 20 different countries.

We should actually think about how lucky we are that Matchroom does an event where half of the field is American players when the USA only represents a VERY small portion of their network coverage. They could easily produce an event with Europe and players from another region where the networks have a higher demand for pool but they don't.[/QUOTE]

I don't feel lucky at all because of Matchroom, I feel disrespected and could care less weather or not the Mosconi Cup continues.

Would they still call it the Mosconi Cup? Maybe they could do it in Korea and call it the Williams Cup....

100% spot on!

I didn't say it was unfair, but on the same note , do
You think that was our strongest possible line up?

How would you go about choosing the lineup then? And more importantly, who would choose the lineup?

At least this way the players have to earn their way onto the team, by playing well over the course of the year.

Any other method is open to deal-making and cronyism. I'm quite sure the ABP would love your scenario....

I don't know what method should be used, maybe a. Public vote. And to be clear one more time.I am not throwing stones so don't take it that way,
I will ask you the same question and give an honest answer

I disagree with your comment. Are you telling me Matchroom with all the success over the years can't put a deal together in the USA since 1994. I think the model they are chasing may be broke but they jsut haven't tried hard enough.
What I'm saying is that Matchroom has already paid all costs associated with the program and it is ready to air. It would be pure profit for them to sell it to US networks, and, they are in it for the profit so that is their sole motivation.

Clearly, the US networks just do not want any part of it. The networks must like the demographics of golfers, bowlers and the like better. More accurately, the people who buy air time must like the demographics better as the networks are whores and will air anything that generates ad buys... Just look at the crap on TV every night.

Oh, so we agree. Misunderstood you..

Cheers and Merry Christmas

And happy holidays to you

Maybe if the loser had to eat a worm and jump in a pool of shit the networks would pick it up? Be more like what is airing now in prime time.

Luke Riches is Trying and that is a Good Thing

I emailed Luke Riches of Matchroom Sports about my concerns about choosing Charlie Williams as Team Captain of USA.
It was surprising to find out that Luke had time from his busy schedule to read my emails and responded to each one.

I have heard a lot from some of his friends, they say he is a great guy and good for pool.
He must know something I don’t know about Charlie?

I don’t know Luke, but I respect him as he answered every one of my emails, knowing that I was not a Charlie Williams fan.

I wish him and Matchroom Sports all the Best !!!

Hopefully things will work out better next year for pool.

I still don't like CW, just my two cents, Barney

Cris,

You are correct. They could have Europe vs The Far East. But what fun would that be? Watching the Americans yell, scream and threaten their opponents is what sells subscriptions. Bet their worldwide sales were higher with Earl on the team. This is entertainment first. Pool second. Ever watch Matchrooms coverage of the World Dart Championships?

Per the press release that they put out I think today they haveandare trying but they say that American tv has little interest. I guess they can't make them put pool on tv but they do air live all over Europe and Asia and then sell the Mosconi Cup to Fox Sports I believe. However they still put on the events so thats a good thing.

It doesn't have to be like The Wild World Of Sports.
Pool placed in a "reality TV" venue would sell.
If you think Pawn Stars & American Pickers is popular, wait until the United States gets a load of a road player throwing a piece of $30 Kamui chalk (Kamui to be one of the many advertisers of course).
The drama with Earl in a ring game would be fascinating for the average American TV Viewer.

I think our lineup was strong. Are there American players that could be stronger, perhaps. But perhaps not, too....

Is Corey playing to his ability lately, given his lack of participation this year?

Which Earl would show up?

Dennis didn't play well enough, often enough, to make the team, would he be better at Cup time?

The answer is all of those guys can play better than the current team, sometimes. And sometimes not. We could go on and on with more names...

Who do you have in mind, Petey? How much better have they been shooting than the guys we had play? If they didn't finish high enough over the past year to qualify, how much pool have they been playing, and how well? You don't just turn it on when you want to. Or maybe you do.... I've not seen it though.

Well said, BFDLAD, Matchroom is a credit to our sport.

The American fan feels a bit disenfranchised by the event because it is not televised, but that's not Matchroom's fault.

The fact that the cream always seems to rise to the top in Marchroom events is testament to the quality of their events.

Luke Riches is pool royalty, and I'm sure he pays attention to the feedback of pool fans when it comes to his events. How to deal with that feedback is his business.

Great post Mark! And to Matchroom, I am personally pleased that you let us "look behind the curtain" as to your selection process and thinking. It seemed to pool fans to be a closely guarded secret and I'm confident this PR will mitigate much of the balogna being pumped out.

Hats off to Matchroom Sports for sharing this insight. Many thanks for all you do.

Matt

I've been saying this for a long time...with the whole reality TV craze, something pool based will draw more folks in who will want to see other pool related programming. Do a reality show just following Earl around to various venues, tournaments, money matches, etc. Lots of tape of "the World according to Earl". Viewers won't know what hit them. Lots of interviews with current and former players, broadening the coverage and introducing them to the wider public.

Or (maybe as a next step) do a show like UFC, with two teams of B players (all with backstories) are each led by HoF players (team Segal vs. team Varner, etc.). Lots of woofing, etc. Winner of Ultimate Pool gets sponsored (and televised) to the U.S. Open, thereby getting more TV coverage/interest for that event.

Ok, how does this concept get off the ground? Maybe Joe Rogan can create some traction. I'm in..

Match room makes its money in Europe so IMO as long as they have the Americans to play the heel its all good for them.

Match room is not a charity. They do pool events because they make money on them as they should. Please don't think they are some benevolent organization. Money leaves they leave. As long as its profitable everyone on this forum could call them nine kinds of asshole but they wouldnt miss a beat. Its a business.

Finally....if you really think a few harsh posts on the internet could make a company like Match Room pull up on promoting pool events then we as pool fans really have become scared sheep desperate for any scraps we can get.

I agree with all above. Johnnyt

I was thinking the same thoughts. Certainly we must grant them that the MR crew are all big boys and a few candid comments here are like water off a duck's back. It's all about the cash and the European market.

Here is one thing that bothered me about the MR press release:

"From the perspective of Matchroom Sport, we really don’t mind which of the two sides wins the Mosconi Cup, as long it is an exciting event, satisfies our broadcasters and sponsors and neither of the sides begins to emerge as dominating the competition."

Everyone can draw their own conclusions as to the implications that statement logically leads to.
