Be careful with Matchroom Sport

Ok, maybe Matchroom made a mistake when chosing Charlie Williams as Captain of the American team, maybe they didn't thats is their call and they are a very successful promotions and sports management company and I believe know what they are doing. Do I think that CW was the right pick? No, I think there were other people out there that would have been a better pick.

Now, I have said this before and I am sure I will say it again but lets all be very careful when we vent our frustration on Matchroom. These guys are an amazing asset to the pool world and have many option to go with other sports if they feel like it. If Barry Hearn decided that it wasn't worth all the bad and negative pr he could very easy turn around and say I will take the money, sponsors and time and do an event for fishing, Boxing, Darts, etc and we would lose at least 2 great events. So I say if you don't agree with something that Matchroom does then you should absolutly say something, I am not suggesting a gag on anyone but maybe there is a nicer way to say some of the things I have read in different posts on here latley.

I have no alliance with Matchroom other than I think Luke is a great guy who works hard and that Barry Hearn is a F$8king genius. The only alliance I have is to the pool and billiards community and I already see the pro pool arena turning to crap and I just do not want us as a collective to piss off someone who does good for the sport by being nasty toward them.

Once again, I am not suggesting that we are not entitled to let Matchroom, CSI, Barry Berhman, Zuglan or any other promoter know if we feel there was something that could be improved on or something that potentially could be done better. I'm just saying lets do it ina nice, classy, and educated manner.

Just my 2 cents.

You do realize you're suggesting this to pool players right? :)

They should get more pool on TV here in the States. The lack of coverage is ridiculously awful.

Per the press release that they put out I think today they haveandare trying but they say that American tv has little interest. I guess they can't make them put pool on tv but they do air live all over Europe and Asia and then sell the Mosconi Cup to Fox Sports I believe. However they still put on the events so thats a good thing.

The press release from Matchroom clearly says the players chose the captain, not Matchroom .

Well from what I see here is Matchroom made the initial decision and then askedthe playersto approve it and they did. So a little of both but from what Luke says the players did not go to him with the request. Luke went to them with CW in mind and the players agreed. Well thats how I am reading it anyway.

Charlie Williams had played five times in the Mosconi Cup, winning four times with a playing record of 12 wins and 9 defeats. Furthermore he had won three tough singles matches in an intimidating York Hall and knew what the event was about.

With that in mind, we then put it to the players on the team. This is not a formality as I don’t believe that the players would approve a captain

it feels very strange to hear somebody make perfect sense on azb.

bfdlad kudos on a great point, as someone who used to be a UK fan of snooker and turned into a hardcore 9 ball fan i have to say it's disgusting the lack of money and tv coverage our sport gets, thanks to Matchroom it gets 4 nights of live coverage a year for the greatest pool tournament the Mosconi and a couple of one hour highlights shows for the masters and the world cup through Sky Sports, without that coverage the UK and Europe probably wouldn't even have heard of 9 ball pool and some of your best players wouldn't have existed.

The professional game of pool is dead as it is, Matchroom sport are the only good thing this sport has, we NEED them!

I for one greatly appreciate the MC
Event. But would like to see Americans
Be able to choose their own team
Completely.Someone else picking our team
To me makes no sense

I see where you're coming from but it's not like you have complete idiots choosing the teams, these guys are people that watch pool all year and they know whats going on, this year the US team was the top 5 ranked guys, if any other sport was picking a team of 5 it would probably be the top ranked guys also.

In a non deliberate attempt at contradicting myself i suppose Dennis Hatch would've been a good pick, and this is from a big Europe fan

Quote from Luke regards to pool and USA TV:

Many efforts have been made by Matchroom Sport over the years to get some television foothold in the USA, leading to a live telecast, but the current reality is that US TV is not overly interested in pool.

Hey Mark,

Not trying to split hairs here but the quote says the word "overly". This leads me to the question...Is US TV slightly interested or fairly interested. Do they have to be overly interested? Perhaps Matchroom can make things more attractive to close a broadcasting deal. Cna't believe they haven't been able to get this done since 1994. Perhaps Matchroom can give back to the community. Plus, the cost structure is all ready in place and so any additional revenue would drop straight to the bottom line.

Perhaps UK arrogance and superiority is getting in the way of their desire to strike a deal with the USA? I've seen this many times having worked for a UK based company in the USA. USA is the red headed step child and all things important are based in the UK. I just don't believe they have tried hard enough to make a deal with the USA.

Plus, the real heart of the matter for me is my American patriotism makes it very difficult to accept that Matchroom owns the Mosconi name all the while slighting the American fan base.

I say f Matchroom until they begin to treat the American fan base with the respect and dignity we deserve. If they want to move into bowling or fishing go ahead, why would I care. Only way I can see the Mosconi Cup live is a boot leg stream link.

Regards,
Mark in Houston

Amazing

The MC team was the five highest ranked players. Hard to have a better system than that

Matchroom's Sports is a profit motivated business that sells TV programming. They would make more money if they could sell an existing program with all costs already loaded to US TV but obviously US networks don't want to buy it. I guarantee you if they could, Matchroom would sell the programming to US networks but they can't.

How can you possibly find fault with either of those scenarios?

ya, getting TV time in the States and all the revenu that follows would really suck for Matchroom - you should go punch yourself in the face and say shut up stupid.

I disagree with your comment. Are you telling me Matchroom with all the success over the years can't put a deal together in the USA since 1994. I think the model they are chasing may be broke but they jsut haven't tried hard enough.

Both of those red herring arguements don't change the fact this thread is about the captain pick and nothing more...

I'm not sure I get your comment. Are you being scarastic toward Matchroom or disagreeing with me?

Great post Mark. I completely agree. Matchroom is the best company out there for pool and they do listen to the fans. I believe in years past they would just pick the team and in the more recent years they have moved more towards publicizing the points races and how they will choose the teams so players can strive for something, even having a fan's choice a few years ago.

Matchroom puts more hours of pool on TV than anyone else out there and as much as I wish there were more hours on American TV, I think the American fans need to keep the bigger picture in mind. Matchroom sells the programming to the networks that have a market for it and some of that money comes back to the players. So although there is not much of a demand (by the networks) for pool in the US, our American players make good money off of these events that are primarily funded by networks in other countries that are buying this content. Matchroom can't control the demand for their product but they continue to produce high quality events and opportunities for our top players to earn more money.

Everyone posting that Matchroom doesn't get pool on TV in the USA is misinformed. You need to check your facts before you start bashing companies. Fox Sports buys the Mosconi programming along with various other programs they produce. It's not live coverage like Sky Sports does but we all know that getting pool on a national US network LIVE is a far fetched idea and not coming anytime soon. Matchroom's pool events air on around 20 different networks in over 20 different countries.

We should actually think about how lucky we are that Matchroom does an event where half of the field is American players when the USA only represents a VERY small portion of their network coverage. They could easily produce an event with Europe and players from another region where the networks have a higher demand for pool but they don't.
