Beating a player on drugs...

Boy I agree 100%. If pool is a professional sport , why are these drug enhanced players allowed on the table. I know a few Hall of Famers that should NOT have been inducted ...its a disgrace to the game. Play pure...then lets see your game. I had as sponsor and they sure wouldn't tolerate it.

Seriously though...you think all the steroid users are gonna tell you they are users and the drunk drivers are gonna let you know who they are?

An inability to regulate is not to be confused with support of.

My uhh friend would highly recommend small amounts of LSD, cause it lasts for 8+ hours and there isn't a crash. He says the cue balls burn spots on the cloth also look pretty neat. He's tough to beat with or without drugs

Man  :grin:!!! I like some shrooms a couple times a yr, but some Timothy Leary!?? That table would become a green dragon, with 6 eyes and I would be hard pressed to even know the balls, were balls . I can't see anybody playing good on some acid lol.

I think the same. Man's likely to drop to the floor and play with the carpet for an hour...maybe swirl ice cube in a glass for the next hour.

But I did know a guy who never said no, ever. Came up to me and told me 'man, I'm tripping balls now' at a tournament. I watched him get on a practice table and play left handed for about an hour and didn't miss too many balls at all. Yes he was a right handed player, normally.

I believe Buddy Hall was a speed demon !!
Old school action matches were often marathons that were all about stamina and endurance that lasted for days players almost always used some type of amphetamines to compete at that level for long extended matches.

And in your experience, terry...did those guys play better hopped up, or did they just play the same but longer?

I refuse to say Buddy took anything at all because I never saw it or saw him act like he was anything other than tired.

However,I asked him about this subject over 20 years ago when he was still among the elite,so AFAIK way before the real high grade meth hit the streets but Desoxin was readily available at tournaments along with the common bathtub crank,as well as coke, etc. I had heard stories about it and asked him and this is what he had to say.

His exact phrasing might be a little hazy, but he said if you bet big on pool regularly in the 70's well thru the 80's,if you weren't on something you probably lost because you could bet your sweet ass your opponent was .

The first time I ever saw big money gambling AND saw someone do coke in person happened within minutes of each other. This guy played awful good winning the first 8 ahead in a little over an hour. The guy had the exit blocked so I couldn't just walk out and did a golf ball sized bag in front of me in the bathroom before they started the 2nd set. I told my buddy and he said we need to bet on ole boy ASAP so we found a bet and went all in for 300.

It was over in less than 15 min, with our horse breaking and running out the entire set like it was NOTHING .

Man-made has never been my thing.

I concur with those that suggest slowing the pace if possible. Tommy D.

Mad skills!!!! I will never be that talented :frown:

Chemical warfare.......................

I haven't been part of that scene in years but desoxin's were the absolute NUTS. You'd acquire what i'd call "tunnel-vision", nothing else existed but the balls. If you were already playing good you might catch a gear that was HARD to fade for your opponent. The big problem(pool-wise not health) was when your game started to drop-off the "stuff" was making you think you were still playing good. BTW, i'm not gonna name names but VERY few top action players from late 60's thru late 80's/early 90's gambled "on the natural". Multi-day matches were the norm, not the exception.

busted up a meth head many years ago in tulsa over the course of roughly 3 days....his dope gave him hope but at the time i was fresh off 100mile weeks of distance training so long story short, he got eaten and chit off a cliff.

mental and physical preparation is a must when combating chemical warfare....

they will try and go over the top and win with the drugs....if they aint winning....they will try more or change the mix.

Cant lie it was very demanding on me physically after the first 2 days, the next half day was relying more and more on the mental side as I was in much pain in regards to my lower back especially. The game was one pocket, and honestly if it were 9 ball even in as good a shape as i was in, i doubt i could have played that long at a much quicker pace. The last thing that started to go were my eyes. If i were to do that again i would definately be using some eye drops to fade the dryness and blur i remember happening.

many top players do smoke pot....i have nothing against that. Imop thats more of a stress thing than some performance enhancer. We all know that life style aint easy, theres nothing wrong with pot unless your watching reefer madness too much lol. I for one would much rather see folks smoke pot than drink alcohol.

I've witnessed many players and just people in general go down the hard drug road and never come back....some of them were world class talents, who turned into world class losers because of it not only in their chosen professions, but in their lives as well.

stay classy and never trashy azers

Adderall = amphetamine salts.

Not exactly the same thing but...

when taken at higher doses it can boost energy and concentration.

Does Adderal help pool players with their concentration? Does it help them focus better? Does it help anxiety? Just curious if pool players take drugs for these issues, to help them have a better chance at winning. I understand that it would do them no good if they do not have the skill within them, without these issues, like fear, anxiety, and other issues (like tiredness).

Heres a great player drug story. With a fine happy ending as any one lost down that road could wish or pray for. It is 100% true.

Buddy Hall and Mike Massey were to play for 10k at Rosies in Oklahoma many moon ago.

Buddy walked into the pool hall and Mike is laying out on the table face up, high on a hell of a mix. Proclaiming he was at one with the universe and could not be beaten.

Well Buddy beat his brains in and left him for broke.

Mike made his way to Tulsa, Oklahoma to his pal, fellow player and cuemaker Joel Weinstocks place. Every day for nearly a week Mike walked from Joels home outside of town, crossing the arkansas river, cutting up the east end of the river south and making his way to the Praying Hands at Oral Roberts University on 81st and Lewis.

There he prayed to the Lord to save him........Mike found his way....

Thats how the world got the Mike Massey the worlds ambassador of pool that we know today, its also why nearly every autograph Mike gives out says something in the way of "Jesus Loves you"

"This headlong plunge into the mystic came to a twisted end in a bar in Colorado when, unbeknownst to Massey, another pool player spiked his drink with LSD, the likes of which he had never experienced before.

"I was playing this guy for $50 a game, and all of a sudden I start looking at the ceiling, thinking I could think the balls into the pockets," Massey says. "I had been into all this psychic stuff and I could see how minds do have a certain control over situations that happen, so I started trying to win the game just by thinking positive thoughts."

It is like running on nitrous...or throwing gas on a fire.

I don't believe it helps with anxiety, per se. More like it allows intense concentration...but there is a limit to how much time one can spend at that rpm.

He signed my cue case about 10 years ago, but I'm glad that's one of the few occasions where he left that out.

Someone had jarred him with acid. Also 100%!
Oops, didn't see post #57 above.

P.S. Waterdog had been beating everyone around L.A. when he arrived at my poolroom in Bakersfield in the early 70's. I didn't know him, so of course I played him. We played ten and twenty dollar 9-Ball and I busted him for about $300. He was talking some crazy shit about the Universe and the planets and was wearing a weird T-Shirt airbrushed with stars and stuff like that. Later on people were amazed that I beat Waterdog and when I found out who he had beaten I was pretty surprised myself. I next saw him again in Las Vegas a year or two later. I went over to talk to him and he remembered me from Bakersfield. I asked him what was going on with him that day and he told me he was high on acid when we played. TRUE STORY!
