Because you asked so nicely

I was asked to tell some stories about Cliff Thorburn. He won the World Snooker Championship twice in the eighties, marvelous accomplishments. At that time he was young, exciting and very offensive minded with his snooker.
I played Cliff once at "Tacoma Whitey's"pool room in Tacoma, WA. He spotted me the wild 6 ball, meaning I could shoot that ball any time I wanted and even as many times in a row as I could, as it spotted back up. I lost and in retrospect, I don't think it was much of a handicap. It was a great learning experience for me.
I was there when he played our best snooker player, the great Denny Searcy. They played 50 hours and broke even on one of the 6' X 12' tables in Cochran's but honestly that hallowed contest was played with American balls and rules but Denny had never even heard of a snooker cue. In all it was the stuff of legend and perhaps the finest match this humble correspondent has ever witnessed. Again, remember, Denny could do things that nobody else even knew was possible. To put things into perspective, with my game, Denny used to spot me one point and it was gambling.
Cliff beat everybody he played, including "Herman the German" in OKC except Ronnie Allen. The only reason Ronnie beat him was that he tricked Cliff into playing on an ultra tough table with three red balls. Nobody ever played better defense than Ronnie at Snooker or One Pocket.
Simply put, it's an honor and a pleasure just to know a great champion like Cliff.

Grady,
You can tell how much we enjoy your stories, memories and remarks on the famous and infamous players, past & present. Would you ever consider a Volume 2 to "Bet High & Kiss Low"? Perhaps you could devote several paragraphs to assorted pool personalities. You, Freddy & JohhnyT have a gift for writing pool stories in an interesting and humorous manner.
Please do consider a sequel Grady.
Thank you.

PS-I can't wait for Jay's book to be released and we're chomping at the bit hoping that JAM has some extra time in her busy schedule to tell us more about THE Earthquake in the book she's writing!

Thanks for the story Grady I always like hearing about fellow Canadians.

Only one nit pick though, Cliff only won the World Snooker Championships once, 1980 against Alex Higgins 18-16. Still a great accomplishment considering only 5 people won the title during the 80's.

What Grady didn't tell you was that Cliff and Denny went on the road together after that memorable game. I remember seeing them pull up in front of the Billiard Palace in Bellflower in that snazzy little Jaguar XKE. I think Denny was driving.

The Billiard Palace had a 5x10 Snooker table and nightly Pay Ball games with Ronnie, Richie, Jimmy Reid, Keith (he was about 14-15), Cole, Eddie Burton, Bob Osborne and even Grady sometimes. No one was barred from that game. Cliff absolutely murdered that game, winning many thousands of dollars. BIG money in the 60's. They were playing 20 and 40, meaning $20 on each ball (2,3,4,5,6) and $40 on the 7 ball. If you ran out it paid double. So in a five handed game a run out was worth a mere $1,120.

They left Bellflower and headed east, on their way to Detroit. I asked Denny a couple of years later how he did on that trip. He said they only booked one loser (must have been Ronnie), and won about $40,000 total. Denny played Cornbread in the Rack and broke even, winning the first night and losing the second. I think Cornbread was the only guy who may have scared him a little.

Cliff went on to Canada and Denny flew back home to San Francisco.

FYI, Cliff became a member of the Order of Canada in 1983 (the Canadian version of being knighted), and he is also in the Canadian Sports Hall of fame.

He was ranked number 1 in the world at one point, and he was the first player to run a 147 during the World Championships (1983 against Terry Griffith) and was second player ever to accomplish the feat on television (Steve Davis was the first in 1982 at the Lada Classic against John Spencer I believe).

I saw Cliff play snooker on a few occasions, and Cliff had a well-deserved reputation for being able to win "while requiring." For those unversed in snooker termnology, that means winning a rack when there aren't enough points left on the table to outscore one's opponent. Hence, one is "requiring" points from a snooker to have a chance to win. It speaks volumes about Ronnie Allen that he was able to have his way defensively with Cliff, whose defense was really quite exceptional.

I've had the honor of getting to know Cliff a little at the '04 WPA World Champs in Taipei. We had dinner once or twice. An absolute great guy with a one-liner for any occasion

I think I saw a tape of this from a guy from Monteal, who was doing some sub-contracting for IBM. Was this where Thorburn made the last black and collapsed on the table?

Sort of. Here is the full break, it's about 16 minutes long. He eventually lost in the finals of the tournament.
