No sense bothering the authorities with burdensome paperwork before releasing them since this was clearly their first offense. (Do you get the sense that they drove into a dead end street/alley?)

I'm a little biased since my case was snagged not long ago.

He spit gum on the sidewalk and got caned for it.
They did a special on one of the news networks about the caning process and how brutal it was. The men who carry out the punishment are masters with the weapon and the weapon itself is soaked for days so it's heavy as hell. It literally rips all the skin off your ass and takes huge chunks of meat with each blow. I don't remember how many licks he got, 10, 20? He would have been hospitalized for sure.

I bet a lot of people who think of doing a lot of things there don't do them! A fantastic system.
He was supposed to get six licks and got instead 4 because of political pressure. He admited there was almost no blood afterward and even was able to walk and sit down right after....I can remember my father getting me with a belt a few times bad enough I really could not sit down....I would just lean against a corner wall....lol. He should have got 10. And this punishment is a perfect fit for criminals like derrick. Guys who have no business taking up tax payer money or space in a jail. Go until he can't stand or walk or sit for about an hour then see if he does it again.

In a weekly tournament I was running years ago, a player had a distinctive
cue stolen. Two weeks later, at the same tournament, someone spotted
the cue in someone's case and told me. We created a distraction and
stole it back...gave it to the rightful owner. I put the thief's match next
to the table the rightful owner of the cue was playing on. The guy lost and
didn't come back for two months.
..but when he came back, he apologized to the player and the room.
just from past experience,the prosecutor will let theses guys ride for the smallest thing.i had one recently that was dropped because the arresting officer was having a baby and didn't show to court. it did not make them :embarrassed2: just lucky
Mike iam proud of you . you got too many bad rolls in the past. it looks like the God that he was praying to might have taken his hand of protection off of him. I do feel sorry for his family and all the people in his church that at one point believed him and stood up for him!

F Wikipedia, I watched it when it happened. It was on the news everyday for almost two weeks. We must be talking about 2 different things because they made a huge deal out of him spitting the gum on the sidewalk and throwing down the wrapper. It was the crime
It does happen on occasion. Remember Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker? He was captured when some people in a Hispanic area of Los Angeles saw him trying to steal a neighbor's car and took action. By the time police arrived they had kicked the living snot out of him and were still going at it; the police had to break up the mob kicking his ass. "Severely beaten" was the description used by police.

This was in 1992ish if i remember correctly. That is within a year anyway. I was still in school and we watched it there. We had classroom discussions about it daily. Of course all we know is what was reported at the time so maybe he did other crimes, all i know is he got caned because of the gum/wrapper.
Wikipedia link was for a source that, while sometimes less than credible, can cite references and give a framework of what happened. I too was in school at the time, and remember that his punishment was related to the vandalism of cars. The media used the "gum laws" to highlight how strict the laws are in Singapore. Fast forward years later, and I visited Singapore in the Navy. It's a great place, and surprisingly easy to stay out of trouble if you're not a complete idiot.

Yes, as i remember it it was vandalism, spray painting cars or maybe sidewalks... Maybe thats where you got the sidewalks from. I remeber clearly the Public outrage of the caning sentance...what a joke. And they said crime there at the time was like non-exsistant and the streets were the cleanest in the world. They blew it way out of proportion and his parents were crying about it. The caners were martial arts guys who were experts as not to severly injure him and he ended up only getting 4 and then was sent home to mommy and daddy. At least thats how i remember it.
