Being Old & Beating The Youngsters

I came back from my usual watering hole & my wife quized me, as to how well I played. I told her, that I held the table for 3 hours against a group of 7-8 20 & 30 something people. She asked me if I was pleased, because at 66 yrs old, I had beaten the younger players & I said that was NOT the point. As a younger person myself, I had relished the info that I had garnered, from those at table one. To learn at an early age, that you could actually PREDICT, where the cueball would go or that you could move an object ball to the left or right, with english from the cue ball, was absolute golden news to me. When I try to impart some of this small amounts of knowledge, to others, I'm met with indifference or simply dismissed as "the old guy". THAT, honey is why, I so love beating these young guns. I don't know if they will learn much from tonight, BUT they will NOT take "the old guy" for granted, at our next meeting...JER

Hope you had some fun,

But actually, I think you should probably save this type of knowledge until your at least playing for......say $20 to $50 a rack!? But, I always try to have as much fun as possible with whomever I'm playing!

Take care JER,

Ken ;)

I enjoy "showing " the younger players that an old man can still shoot pool too. :p

My APA team recently (Feb.) won the APA Shootout in our league area. We have two 59 year olds and one 68 year old on the team. I (one of the 59 year olds) won 5 of 7 rounds that I played in.

I'm shooting the best pool in my life and enjoying it, except for the constant drama/sandbagging in the APA.

What is your and the other 59 and 68 year olds apa handicaps?

Good for you, Jerry. I'm glad to see you are enjoying the game. I'm the young guy who always hung out with the older fellows and absorbed all I could, especially the stories of the "good ole' days". The two that stick out in my memory are "Red" & "Mingo". They were both solid "A" players, one in his 60's & one in his 70's. They were both old road players who somehow by chance ended up settled in the same small town & it was a coin toss as to which would be winning the local tourneys on a given night. Worked out great for me.

I learned a lot from them, even though my 22 year old arrogance & stroke prevented me from really taking much of it to heart. Now yeas later I wish I had the opportunity to go back & actually listen to their wise but subtle hints & guidances. But the things I did learn, I use to this day. And funny as it seems, I still remember things they told me & I apply them now that my game is refined, but had no use for when I was "banging". Funny how things work out. Anyway, nice story, Jerry. Brought back some pleasant memories :)

Please don't take this wrong, but IMHO and personal experience an "APA Handicap" is more a function of how well one can manipulate numbers than it is an indication of an individuals level of skill at the table. But that's just my opinion.

I agree to tsp&b's take on the APA. If you don't take some liberty with defense and innings, you 'price' yourself out of playing. (too many high handicaps on a team; suddenly you can't meet the 23 SL limit)

to stevea's question, the 68 year old is a 4, I'm a 5 and the other 59 year old is a 4. the rest of the seven member team were newbies and all of them were SL3's. Jack Flanagan (fellow team member and AZ'er) started the tourney as a SL3, but trounced one of the LO's members in round 6,,,immediately, he was bumped up to a 4.

yeah, flash,,,the story of my life: one good game and I'm moved up. I've really gotta learn to make it a longer game against the LO's team. they are a bunch of assholes and complain about anybody who beats them.

I think some of that team went to Vegas 2 years ago and was DQ'd pretty early because of somebody playin' way below their skill level !

we have to play this bunch in the finals in 4 or 5 weeks. I can't wait. :(

Keep it up Jer. I'm only 51 but in most of the pool halls around here I feel like an old timer! Hell I"m so old I remember when Buddy Hall came to Dallas in the mid seventies and I bet he didn't weigh 180 lbs! Now remembering Mr. Hall at 180, thats a long time ago!! Damn I'm old!! I gotta go find my walker, I forgot where I left it. What were we talking about? I cant remember.
Oh yeah, I like to put some of the youngsters in their place now and again. And on a good day I still can, as long as its before the 9' oclock news.
