I agree that he is a different sort. Almost OCD in his mannerisms, but he understands the game, and his videos are good. I recently purchased a video of his (one of the 10,000 that he has out there) and it still mentioned that he still offers private lessons. I'm sure they'd be worth the $$$$.
Our very own ex-cuemaker Dave Fingers went and spent an expensive week with Bert. Dave is a fine player...an APA 9...wins lots of local tournaments. I even saw him come within a ball of beating pro Mike Davis in a hill hill match. So yes...he can play a little. After a week of Berts lessons, Dave paid him and was about to leave...Bert said "kid I gotta be honest with you, if I played as bad as you then I'd go ahead and quit pool". True story. After hearing that I knew I'd never recommend him for private lessons. I do have all his tapes & material and its hugely helpful if you are willing to put the necessary time in to do whats required to improve.
I have 55 of his tapes. There is a lot of info and things to work on but don't expect any one tape to teach you everything.
Most of his tapes are of students getting a lesson. It appears as if they are either top notch players or have a lot of money.
I have also heard some strange stories about his lessons. Most of them about how he really belittles the student.
I think that I would give Earl a shot at private lessons. There is a video of him giving a lesson to someone and he was really getting into it. The video was either posted here or was on YouTube.

Pretty classy move.
I would recommend a local BCA instructor instead. They do have teaching standards.

Coming from someone with your credibility, we all have to accept your story as true. And you are to be commended for not letting Bert's apparent rudeness influence your very correct opinion that there is a wealth of knowledge in his tapes.
They are very much worth the money but I agree with Joey that sticking with a BCA instructor known to have excellent teaching skills and not being rude...and/or Allison & Gerda's pool school would be excellent choices.

I took lessons from Bert when he (we) were in Chicago. Sometimes a little nutty, but that kept things interesting. His knowledge of the game is suprising and his exuberance about teaching is genuine. All in all, a fun guy who knows pool. Hard telling what he is charging today for lessons but probably worth it. One of the best tapes is the "Mighty X". His methods work. JMHO.
There is a lot of good stuff on his tapes, but too much repitition. His latest tapes, imo, are a waste. How many times can you watch Neils Feijan shoot the same drill over and over again. Forty minutes. I kept fast forwarding to see when he would change something. The same thing over and over again. Forty minutes. There are about 80 Kinister tapes. They should be condensed into into 15 really good tapes. The speed tape is a joke. I think Kinister's first 3 or 4 tapes were really good. I also think this went to his head and just started making tape after tape without any consideration to content.

A couple of years ago, I saw him give a lesson at his place in Mechanicsburg. He told the guy to keep practicing a particular shot while he left to go get smokes. Call me nutty, but if I am paying a guy the kind of money Bert demands, I kind of expect him to actually be in the room with me.
I don't know the whole story, maybe they were friends or something. Still, it was kind of strange.
I play a little one pockey in Dallas,and have run into Bert several times,we played ,he was always personable,friendy, and offered me many helpful hints just for the sake of being helpful.I don't know much about teachersin pool but I would say Bert could be very good.I do know in golf it is not unusual to tell the syudent to do a certain thing and then leave him to it for a period.the student doesn,t always know whats best.WAX ON WAX OFF...remember the KARATE KID>
