Best "Celibraty" Pool Player?

Pool & the Silverscreen

I think billiards fans are overdue for another big Billiards/Pool related Silver Screen production.

This time please contact actors like Michael Vartan etc. That actually have a LOVE for the sport, let's get them mixed in with few Professional Players that may have a bit of acting talents hidden away, and pull out all the stops!

We need another Classic Pool Movie, that will be enjoyed by the masses, not just the players, & that generations can enjoy & watch again & again. Not another low budget flop (that ONLY the players might enjoy.)

Ps.. On that subject (to The Powers That Be..) when will we finally get to see the Kid Delicious flick?!

I can't remember Joe Rogan's game, so with that in mind, the best celebrity player I'd ever seen was Jerry Orbach. That man could play and he understood the game. Paul Sorvino came in a close second

Ms.Crimi, In my limited trips to LA, I used to frequent the rooms around Hollywood, where the celeb's hung out....I watched many of them play, and you are right about Jerry Orbach..I do not agree with Fel's description of Orbach, he not only played good, he also had a lot of 'hustler savvy' !..He could (and did) give serious weight, to guys like Sorvino and Gleason !

The only two celeb's I ever got to play, were James Caan (D-player) and Jack Kelly, (who used to play Garner's brother on Maverick) He was a C player, in fact, he STILL owes me $200, from our last play, 20 yrs. ago ! ;)..I Played Caan several times, (with ever increasing huge spots) He was fun to play with, always paid off, and never bit**ed about losing !

Jimmy and Ronnie Caan have been friends of mine since the mid-seventies! When they both lived at 'Turnberry Isle' in North Miami.

We still talk occasionally, SJD's post will give me a reason and chance to speak to Jimmy again!
;)

I saw him hit some balls around and was pleasantly surprised.

Never heard of Michael Vartan, and Joe Rogan was just a host on a show.

My vote goes to Jerry Orbach (Law and Order). Even though he died, we will still be seeing him shoot a few shots on Law and Order reruns 25 years from now.

Yes, Jerry could play well, he came to see Earl Strickland and I do an exhibition at the Yale Club in New York City. I saw him hit some balls around and was pleasantly surprised.

-----------------> Manny Pacquiao ?

From what I have seen (on youtube only of course) Manny and Joe Rogan, both appear to be WELL below 'A' player status... They look to be about an even match with each other, and they both do love the game...But, both have so much else going on in their lives, I don't see them ever having the time, (or the skills) to become any better than an average B player..(never even B+)

IMHO,..the above describes almost ALL celeb pool players, no matter how much they like to play, or gamble at pool !..In my entire life, I have only seen a few celebs, that have actually cracked the 'B+', 'A-' barrier, but it is very rare indeed !

Jerry Orbach was probably around A speed.
Cory Lidle (pitcher for Yankees, died in plane crash) was probably around B speed

Those are my two votes. Other notables I've seen over the years include Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Sorvino, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Poasda.

Sorvino continues to be a regular at Amsterdam. He's a good D, maybe a low C. Clemens was a regular while on the Yankees. He would play pool during the day when he had a night game or the night before a day game. Sometimes, he'd bring other Yankees and they were all horrible. The only Yankee that could really play was Lidle. When he was traded to the Yankees, he started showing up at Amsterdam almost immediately and became a popular, yet quiet regular, seen almost every day. Very nice guy and his loss was widely mourned.

I find that absolutely amazing !..Not that you might have known him, but that you have known ANYONE that long, and they will still speak to you ??? ;)

PS..Please tell him hi for me.. He may only remember me as, "that guy from San Jose" !

I'm pretty sure that Mark is still above Joe Rogan...

I will say and I believe that Jay Helfert agrees with me, that Mark Kendall is the best celebrity pool player.

In fact, even Joe acknowledged Mark was better than him when he interviewed him.

He's even a regular poster here as MarkGW...

Jerry and I did an episode of, 'Murder She Wrote' with Angela Lansbury. He was a very fine player, could run 75 balls for sure.

He used to come down to, 'Hollywood Billiards' when I was manager there. He liked to banging around the 3C balls with me!

Paul Sorvino used to show up at our pro-celebrity events on the east coast.

Joe Rogan is a good player, but I'd bet that Mark Kendall from Great White would beat him pretty handily, (MarkGW here on the forums is his handle). He is the lead guitarist from Great White.

edit: Sorry I didn't see all of the follow up posts talking about Mark before I responded to Eric...

Paul Sorvino used to show up at our pro-celebrity events on the east coast. I didn't see him play much, however, he certainly enjoyed the game and watched several matches. Paul did a charity event with us and was enthusiastic about teaming with the top players.

Mark and I have played and even gambled at pool, he is an accomplished player. Mark actually wrote the story of how we played in Dallas (here on this forum).

He has passion for the Game - this quality is probably why he has accelerated to the highest levels in his musical career. I have always been a fan of GREAT WHITE, so it was pretty cool to have him wanting to match up on the pool table. He could give me a huge spot playing the guitar, although it would be closer on the piano. ;)

Joe Rogan is also an accomplished player and did our commentary at the Hollywood Park Casino in LA (an event the PCA did with Jay Helfert). Joe can take the "7 Ball" from top short-stops and it's a pretty even game.

I'm not sure which celebrity is better, it would depend largely on how much time they have to play (on a regular basis).

I've known and played with Mark for going on 20 years, I haven't gotten to play with Joe as of yet, so my opinion would be a little biased.

I was just going by what Joe said himself and what little I know of his game.

Mark can probably beat Scott Lee, but would have trouble with John Barton.

You''re probably right, I can't even remember how Mark and I matched up, although I do remember what table we played on. He did run out from the break on a few occasions.

I'd guess Mark can probably beat Scott Lee, but would have trouble with John Barton.;)

Mark Kendal

Iwould say Mark Kendal the lead guitar player for Great White would definitely be top 3 celeb. player, he has a high run in S.P. like 72 and plays decent 9 ball too. We are all going to the House of Blues to check out there show tonight. Fach myself and John Schmidt, eat your hearts out fellas !!!!

I don't know if anyone mentioned Joe Cocker. My pool league team mate played him often, not realizing his opponent was a legendary singer. He later found out but never brought it up to Joe because he figured Joe preferred being anonymous.

I'll have to ask him how good Joe played.

That was awesome when I got a chance to play you CJ!! I remember I didn't win :-). It was a sweet cheap lesson though. I played Joe Rogan a few month's ago after I did his show on a tight diamond 4 in pkts 10 ball. He didn't win. A- speed is probably about right, Jay Helfert knows a little bit on handicapping players :-). I'm gonna beat my 72 this year. I got a GC 3 with 4 1/2 in pkts and have been hitting balls lately. Hoping to get a 100 soon!!

Play Well, Bud, that 100 will come when you least expect it.

Glad you're still "rockin the table," Mark.

I'm ready for a rematch anytime you're around Dallas - my game's back on track, so be ready to rack. LoL (think this has the makings of a hit song?....."RACK ME," or something like that. ;)
