Best Cheap Cue

I tried the search function but it will not allow me to search the word "cue". I am in the process of purchasing a 9 foot Gold Crown I. Problem is, I have no cues. I was wondering, in your opinion, what is the best stick for under $50? What about under $100? I see a number of threads dedicated to cues under $350/$500, and I've seens a number of beautiful (and rightfully expensive) cues in the WTB forum, but those are too nice for me (and my wallet and skill level). I have not seen a thread dedicated to the cheaper cues available, any suggestions/opinions? Thanks for the help.

If it isn't leaving the house, $50 should be enough for a quality 1 piece cue (aka house cue) and money left over for a premium layered tip of your choice. In the same price range your best bet is a chinese import sneaky pete, including Adams. All the ones I've seen come with Candian maple shafts, 4 prong full spliced construction, and LePro tips. For $100 you can get a name sneaky from Dufferin or Schmelke, cues with more consistent quality control.

I was in Sears yesterday and saw that they actually had some decent cues. These were unlike the cues they usually carry.

Certainly not inlays, but nice looking, are the Black Widow line of cues. The cues have the McDermott logo on the bumper and have clean maple shafts.

Although there are many inexpensive production cues out there, I think for under $100 these are superior than most and may be what you're looking for.

I agree. Schmelke either way. Nice 1 piece house cue is $35 and 2 piece sneaky is $95.

You will have to spend $250.00 or more for a decent (barely decent) two piece cue.

Your best bet is to find a nice one piece cue.

If you are just looking for a few cues to fill up your cue rack in your home and/or let your visitors use them, then may I suggest Rage cues for that purpose. They are inexpensive 2-piece cues. I bought four of them to fill up my 8-cue rack at my house. Two of them actually have pretty nice wood on the shafts and the other two are fairly good. I've run racks with every one of them. They were each under $30. I just cut the tips off (I think they were LePro's) and replaced them with Triangles.

FWIW, the reasons I chose these cues instead of buying more 1-piece cues was for the shaft taper and the ability to break one down if I ever loaned one to somebody, pure and simple.

LP is making some great custom brunswick conversions for $175. For $250 you can get a custom sneaky from a handful of makers on AZ. Not to mention all the used production cues in that price range. IMO $250 can get you a cue that plays WAY better than decent.

home cues

i recommend duffrin canadian hardwood maple 1 peice house cues very good house cues durable quality with a good hit will last many many years they do have cheap sneaky's too.

Recommendation

I, too, recommend the Dufferin bar sticks, and I remember the Valley bar sticks as being pretty good too, with maybe a little better balance to them.

My 'home' pool hall was stocked with all Dufferin 1pc cues and they were really good. I heard rumor that they sold their name though and they are now made out of China and the quality isn't as good anymore. Any truth to that?

If you're talking about the quality of the wood, all the chinese labeled Dufferins are made from wood imported from North America. The maple needed for the shafts only grows in the region of Ontario, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Players

Someone had a new $77 Players cue that played pretty good.
He actually ordered it out of a catalog and I was surprised at the hit.

No you don't and the major percentage of pool cue owners probably don't.

I paid $250 w/tax for my Lucasi and I am happy with it. I have had Better(?) and more expensive cues, but for the money this one gets the job done quite well.

I can tell you that the cues Rackem was selling a while ago in the for sale section titled radial pin cues play great for the money i picked one up for cheap off a guy at the poolhall who didn't know what it was (niether did I) cause i liked the way it hit hope this helps

If it were me... I'd get a clean Mcdermott from a pawn shop..

you get a decent cue at cheap prices... and McD's are famous for a straight cue...

so as long as the previous owner didn't use it for a hammer you should have a decent piece of maple to play with...
