Best glue for tips??

Rubberized Gorrila Ca Glue from Lowes Hardware--I used the regular and gel super glues for years until I found the Rubberized products hitting the market--the addition of the rubberized particals are there to insure that shock doesn't fracture the hold of the glue--best I have ever used--My 2 cents issued

to answer your question, what did we do before superglue, back in the day, tweetens 10 min contact cement, was the only way to go

The poolroom that I grew up in was opened in 1941 by Reid Caswell
And ran by him until his death, I have watched him put many tips on with contact cement and then he would knock the hell out of it with a hammer. I never seen one of his tips come off, but then again he had been doing it for 50 years

Ditto, but I have been playing for only 2+ years and have installed only 20+ tips for friends and myself. None have come off yet.

I use Tweeten 10 minute, only I wait 24 hours.

I like it because, unlike super glue, I have time to make sure the tip is
centered.

I just did 2 tips this week, and they hit like a dream.

You ain't gonna believe this BUT, Elmer's Carpenter's Glue has been working
perfectly for many years of Tip replacements at my house.

Wow, thank you guys for all the feedbacks. Now I gotta get to some stores and see which of the recommended above are sold in my region. Got a whole note of them in my cell phone.

Yep, lots of votes for Loc Tite. And a new one with the archery tip glue. Sounds like one that a person should definitely look into.

Keep in mind that with the Gel CA, it does give you a few extra seconds
to adjust a tip before it sets hard.

Those couple of extra seconds can be a blessing some times.

And as Gunz mentioned, the rubberized Gel can withstand the extra shock.

Also, as has been mentioned, prepping a tip with thin CA is probably the best tip tip that one can get.

Tips, specially pig skin can and will wick up more glue. Really any of them will.
By prepping a tip with thin CA before hand, it will give the bottom of the tip a nice layer of glue.
Then after allowing it to dry for a few minutes, apply the glue of choice and the chance of your tip wicking up more glue than necessary is cut down by a large percentage.

There are many ways of doing this from a couple of hash marks with a blade to using a tip *****.

After you apply a layer of thin CA to the glue side and it dries, I will tap the tip ***** into the bottom of the tip to make some extra perforations. This will allow the Gel CA to set into the perforations and get a little extra hold, much like using a Loc Tite thread locker on bolts.

Using a blade and striking the back of the tip with a couple of hash marks works in the same manor.

Considering that you live in Viet Nam, maybe you could tell us what CA glues are available to you.
Happy tipping to you.

tips on installing a tip

CA glues have a shelf life, that being said I have had a few tips fall off.
I cannot tell you how many cues I have retipped but my guess is a couple thousand, and I hate it when a tip comes off.

Any more I only use thin ca as a primer and loctite ultra gel control.

2 part epoxy works good but takes a long time to dry, Remember 5 min epoxy is workable for 5 min, is still takes hours for it to dry.

If you are using a epoxy to glue the tip on , take a heavy rubber band or bands and do a slip knot around the shaft and loop the rubber band over the tip to hold it firm until the epoxy dries.

If you cannot find the right glues pm me and I will help you get what you need to where you live.

I used epoxy on a home repair and the tip is not coming off anytime soon, that shaft is now my break shaft now.

Hi,

Simple question: what is the best glue to use for installing tips?

thanks,
Cuong.

Super glues are great if you have a lathe -- you will know what I mean the moment you get some cyanoacrylate on your ferrule. So I like Tweeten's 10-minute glue. If you let it set for 24 hours, the tip isn't going anywhere. And it has the benefit of being water-soluble so it's easy to get any stray glue off anything it shouldn't be on.

i personally use CA because it dries fast. a lot here in PI also use this,

A friend of mine who has install thousands of tips says to put loctite gel in the freezer for safekeeping. I put on tips for friends here and there and after about one year in freezer storage my loctite gel works perfectly.

Just curious - how much shelf life do you expect to get from CAs?

I've tried just about everything out there, and I have one conclusion that doesn't vary between brands much.

Generally,CA glues have improved GREATLY over the years as far as shelf life.

I've been using the Loctite Professional in the tall blue bottle for about 3 years now,and always get several months worth of product per bottle, but I'm not as busy with cue work as some either.

The bottle I'm using right now is about 1/2 full and it's been open for almost a year ,at room temperature, just by keeping the cap on it when I'm done with it.

In fact, this stuff is so "hot" that if you don't try and minimize the squeeze-out,you'll find out real quick that it hates Viva paper towels, which can cause extra work in cleaning and detailing the ferrule, cleaning your hands ;),etc.

As long as it's available,I'm sticking with it.

On the other hand,I've had Gorilla CA go bad in the bottle after 6 months with it still in the package. Tommy D.

CA.

Can't recall ever having a tip come off because of the glue failure.

It's fast and effective.

Instead of paper towels, I use old wet wash cloths to wipe off the excess glue spill over. That's another reason I like the gel - much easier to apply with less mess.

Like a dumb ass I bought 15 or 20 bottles of krazy glue with the brush in it.
I was using it on tips. And I didnt refrigerate, I think I lost a dozen bottles.

how long do I want it to last? < untill I use it all up LOL.

I am not to proud to say that I have had a few tips fall off.
Loctite altra gel I think is the best in a fast setting glue, 5 min epoxy is my 2nd choice only because it takes for ever to harden up.

Keeping unopened bottles of CA in the freezer is the proper thing to do.
I was told that once they are opened, that storing in the freezer doesn't help.

I store the opened ones in there as well. It has to be better than leaving them out. Sometimes I can go for longer periods of time before tip installs so
don't feel like wasting good CA.

I have had some last for quite a while and others go bad quickly.

At least put the opened ones in a tray in the fridge to keep them a little colder.

Mike, its not uncommon to have the odd tip pop off. Its not a matter of whether you installed right or not.

With the couple that I had that popped, one on mine in fact, I found that even prepping the tip properly, I could tell that the tip actually did wick up more CA than I had expected.

It happens to everyone sooner or later.
