Best tool for burnishing tip sides?

Just curious. Going to SBE and I always wanna be organized with what I'm shopping for ahead of time. Leaves more time to shoot that way. I notice that after shaving down any mushroom with my porper shaver, the edges are left pretty rough, making it easy to possibly mushroom again. What is the best burnishing tool to use? People actually use a piece of suede twisting the sides for like 15 min straight to get that effect. I def dont feel like doing that til my arm falls off.

Any suggestions?

I just use an old leather belt. Works fine. You don't need a special tool to burnish the sides. Though, I'm sure there are plenty of tools out there for it. Where there is a need to make a buck, some smart dude will make a tool. ...But a piece of leather works fine.

Just don't over burnish it. I think 15 min is excessive. You might be able to do it with super-fine sand paper too. Just get it heated up enough to burnish, then stop. I wonder if maybe some of thse shafter cleaner burnishers might actually do it. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Get a pack of paper matches. Tear off a piece about one inch square. Wet the side of the tip with saliva from a high school cheerleader. Use the side which has ink on it and hold it between thumb and index finger tightly and start turning. The ink and the heat will burnish it quickly. The younger the cheer leader the better!

Hey Keith
I use very light grit sandpaper 1500 or 2000 grit, I cut my pieces of sandpaper thin enough to just burnish (heat up) the sidewalls of the tip, then I bumish it again with a piece of leather. This should make your sidewalls on your tip baby butt smooth. You should be able to pick up this light weight sandpaper at your local hardware store, Ace, Home Depot. Lowes, Walmart or any Automotive stores as well. This is the way I burnish all my tip replacement jobs. Hope this helps & hope to see you & Tony in a few weeks. Take care brother

Lmfao! Think I'm a bit old to have contacts with any cheerleaders. Would a coffee shop waitress do?

My Willard Tip machine has a piece of leather glued to the top of the machine. You wet the sides of the tip and push down hard, holding the shaft horizontally, while you rub the hell out of it for a few minutes. There should be a lot of squeaking - when my dogs ears shoot up I know I am doing it correctly .

I use sand paper to smooth out the outside of the tip and then burnish the sides of the tip. I am by far not expert, but this works fine for me.

So I like the previous poster's suggest to get a piece of leather. The key would be to strap it down somehow so you can rub the hell out of the sides of the tip.

Get you a nice piece of leather between 1/8th and 1/4 in thick. Some cue makers will give them out with their logo stamped on one side. Usually one side is rough and the other smooth. That and a little spit is all you need. I have used this method successfully for over 25 years. It never came close to taking 15 minutes more like 30 or 40 seconds.

Lod fashioned cardboard.......

Hi there,

Just cut a piece of cardboard 6" long and 2" wide. I've used this since the beginning of time and it works just as good as anything on the market.

If you lose it just find another box. It needs to be a real cardboard box.

Try it. You might like it? Works for me.............and cheap!

Buy a 6 in 1 tip tool ($20) and you will never have to ask anyone what the best tool to do something to your tip is ever again.

After smoothing the cut edge with a bit of 600, get a crisp dollar bill, fold it up 5 or 6 times, sit in a chair, lay the shaft across your lap, hold that bill over the tip and roll the $h!t out of that shaft while squeezing the bill on the sides of the tip.

When your thumb and finger begin to smoke and melt, your tip should be nicely burnished. :)

I use cardboard too. Have done that for over 40 years.

Saliva and some folding money works well because of the bills fabric base it won't shred like cardboard will,a thin piece of leather also is very good.I like to show my tip some love and burnish with a 100$ bill.

Ray Schuler showed me his way. Moisten the sides with spit and then take a paper towel, crumple it, put it over the tip and twist with pressure on the sides.

My cue maker recommended using cardboard. I've used pieces of paperback book covers for years. I worked in a book bindery for almost thirty years and still have a bunch though I've been gone for almost fifteen:p

It is important to moisten all around the tip. Although it was mentioned is some of the posts, it is not necessary to use the saliva of a cheerleader. Any attractive woman will do. You can then roll the tip on the rail of a pool table. Not the cloth, the rail.
Mike Sigel once told me he likes a little mushrooming on his tip. He said he uses it to aim.
If you use any of the tools mentioned the like last forever and you do not wet the tip it is likely to pull the tip off.
