Big daddy's billiards for sale!!

I wrote a very quick note yesterday about selling my business. We were... going to keep it going until the end of the month but, decided just yesterday to just be done with it. So that is one reason that the post was so incomplete. Sorry it didn't please you? It's a very stressful time for us because this was my dream....the economy killed us. People are just not spending money? I think if alcohol was involved it might have made a difference? Not sure? We didn't want to get involved in all that. Like I said ....there could be someone out there that also has a dream that might turn it around? I have some interest from two people already so maybe it might re-open?

Just because I didn't make it don't mean someone else can't make it work? Well see?

We were doing really well a couple of years ago...so I knocked down a wall and added on. And made it a real pool-hall! But unfortunately 6 months later the economy went south!! It wound up being the worst mistake I made? But who knew?

Anyway it could work for someone else maybe?

I'm taking appointments so if anyone is interested please call me at 410-302-4010

Thanks, Richard Molineiro.

PS- Thanks to everyone that supported us through the years!!!

You didn't say if you can put in a beverage license. There are a few hoops usually to get one, parking, meeting health requirements. Some cities you have to be a certain distance like 1000 feet from another license and so on. Without a beverage license the place may in fact be worthless.

I always advise someone thinking about opening a place to be sure they can get one. I don't care if they themselves don't want to serve the first beer they need to have the option. They may change their minds or like you want to sell the place.

Right now you need to have that information if you want to sell this place. Don't make a new potential owner have to do all the work only to find they can't get it. With that license in your pocket you have something to sell. Right now you have a failed business that is worth about the used value of your equipment.

What about that Whispers place, when they changed their business to a sports bar did you feel the effect? I don't know any details about this just what I read on the net but it seemed like it could have been a factor.

Some cities will make it easier to get a wine and beer license if you also serve food. That used to be a big hassle because it meant putting in at least a partial kitchen and meeting health codes but with the explosion of food trucks you might be able to work something out to serve food that way with less up front expense and also meet the city's food requirement for the beverage license.

Just a thought.

Rick, sorry to hear that your place has fallen due to the economy. Myself and Country Bob had a chance to visit your place last year while you were hosting the Maryland State 8 Ball Championship. We both liked that pool hall atmosphere and bleacher seating. There are not too many places with nine foot tables that have the capacity to host tournaments and leagues especially in the Baltimore/metro area. I've seen places drop like dominos over the last 18 years.

Seems it's difficult to stay in business these days and turn a profit with a pool hall especially without a license to serve alcoholic beverages and even then it's a gamble.

Good luck to you and your wife in any feature endeavors.

The sad part may be, there is no need for him to be going out of business. He may in fact find someone to take the place off his hands only to see them do all the things he should have done and make a go of it.

When someone like him is in this position it takes some tough love to tell them things they don't want to hear. It is posable there is nothing can be done, the business has run it's course. I have seen this with other pool rooms, usually they get priced out of the market with high rents.

You have nothing to sell so you close the doors, put everything in storage and look for another location in the future. I would hate to liquidate all my equipment for like for like 20 cents on the dollar and just walk away. Maybe sell the rooms as a packaged deal for someone to move to a new location. I have seen this done. I even bought one myself when a building was sold and being torn down, bought it lock stock and barrel.
Each case is different and whose to tell someone what is best for them.

I hope the best for you Levi!

Our pool room in Dundalk just had a public auction yesterday, don't know if it sold or not.

Craig Miceli the owner was trying to get 400, 000 thou for the place, for just the building, he sold all his pool tables to a pool room up in Allentown, pa.

I guess after trying to sell it for 8 months with no takers, he then went the auction route.

Hindsight is always easy and generally non-productive, but IMO I'm fairly certain that at least a year or two ago -- were I you -- I would have started a hunt for a razor-sharp manager whose business acumen and inventiveness would have supplemented my marketing/management weaknesses.

That said, as multi-referenced within this thread, it's quite likely that the absence of an alcohol permit plus the much too-close sports bar conversion spelled doom and may also give a potential buyer major second thoughts about becoming involved.

However, if you fundamentally love having your own room, perhaps a move to new location in a nearby municipality with lower rents, large square footage options, and easy liquor license obtainability, might give you a bright new start, perhaps with the aforementioned sharp manager joining you (given the sensible context of a partial ownership inducement). Such a manager will know that your target market as always is youngish -- between 18 to 40 -- and will maintain a website that attracts and informs that market nowadays. Senior afternoon rates and all-ages/genders leagues are essential as well to help pay the rent.

My condolences to Rick.

I was privileged to play in a couple of the state 14.1 tournaments held there. Great ewuipment, great atmosphere, and GREAT owners. The way Rick managed those tournaments and supported the game was impressive; and he is an excellent player to boot. Trolls here should disappear....as well run as any pool hall, any where. Thanks Rick for all you've done for the game!

Does anyone know the number of tables (at the location)?

Brand names, and sizes would be nice info also.

Someone said Brunswick but the FB pics look like Diamonds.

sorry to hear this, Rick. you are not alone in this economy.

if Black-Balled makes his way there again before you sell - please open your doors and kick his ass across the table for me!

My gosh, why kick a man when he's down on his luck and having to sell his business.....so he didn't mention the location....anyone with a cell phone could reach him if they wanted to contact the owner.
This isn't some pool cue he's hawking on AZ and he neglected to include some photos.....Sorry to hear about your misfortune........Hope another buyer comes along soon for your sake and also your patrons.

Do you plan on doing it again? If you liked the business it is just a matter of a new location maybe a different formula. I have had a few rooms the first when I was only 23. Now after many years out of the business in my late 60's I have a crazy plan to do it again.

I am looking at a collage town and have some ideas. I would love to have a place that would out live me. I was supposed to be up there last weekend to look around but was too busy.

Just curious what your plans are and what you feel you learned from the experience as well as will you do it again.

Rick and Cindy,

I have been at your room a few times (but not as often as I would like) I really enjoyed the times I was there.

Your room was well run, clean, and the tables were always in perfect condition.

I wish you luck in your future adventures.

Sounds like a nice turn key operation for someone that is looking for that way to open a room up, as long is there are no big issues like location, high rent, or a bad crime area. At anyrate, I wish you good luck in Montana no matter what you plan on doing. Johnnyt

This is/was one of the nicer places to play in the greater DC area...GREAT equipment, nice room, great tournament action when they happened. Well set up and well run. It's located in a two story strip mall, just off a major intersection off Arundel highway. Not hugely urban, kind of suburban, but not off the beaten path. Area neither up scale nor run down, kind of average for a pool room location. Not sure a liquor license would have made much difference, although a sports bar or entertainment angle might have kept up with the economy...not a guarantee, as those types of places have been hit, too. If I had lived closer, I'd have made this my regular room...hope someone takes it up and maybe gets the regional tours to do stops there. It will be missed. :(
