I’m writing an article for AARP and other magazines on health topics. It’s about rehabbing playing pool after a stroke. Do you think I should use Billiards or Pool in the title? Probably 95% that read it will be non-pool players. Thank you for your advice. Johnnyt

I like Pocket Billiards

Pool with a capital "P" in the title-might be too Elmery Gantry/Burt Lancaster for AARP.

Good luck with your article. Thanks for the good works, Johnny.

Take care

I like billiards.
It's called that in a lot of literature.
And it covers all the variations , from 7x14 snooker tables to 3x6 bar boxes.
And the 40 million different games that are played on them.

The term is even used by scientists who can't hit the end rail.

I think your numbers may be a little high, 95%. In the 40's through the 60's pool was big. Lots of factory workers had Bowling and Pool teams. And the tavern right across from those factories all had at least 1 pool table.
Lots of seniors only apartments and condos have a game room with a pool table. I think it's a game you can play for a lifetime and a good reason to get off the couch and meet with friends. I see newly retired old timers re-entering the pool hall all the time.

Johnny;

Are you a pool player or a pocket billiards player?

I must admit, I did like Mr. Tucker's suggestion of pocket billiards for your article.

Hope this helped.

Use pool

People will know what your talking about when you say pool, pocket billiards sounds too formal. I guess you could use billiards too.

Yo Johnny -- I suffered a major stroke seven years ago and have used pool to rehab. Wonderful therapy if you ask me. Ask Mrs. 9BP and she'll tell you that I spend way too much time at it.

When I started, it was as if I was playing left-handed for the first time. I'd lost every bit of muscle memory. Today I'm hitting them as well as I did when I played every day at the pool hall. Having a home table can do that.

Best luck with your project.

Start out with Billiards, then later in the article you can tell them how "shooting pool" is good for them. The two terms can be used interchangeably.

I like this. Billiards in the title will eliminate any confusion with swimming and "shooting pool" is something more easily relate-able when talking in depth.
