Blues Music & Pool

It would be remiss of me not to mention this man in a Blues and pool thread.

Robert 'Junior' Lockwood.....often misnamed as 'Lockwood Jr'
Mr Lockwood became known as Robert Junior because he was considered
the heir of Robert Johnson.

Robert had a 9 ft Gold Crown in his home in Cleveland and knew and
thought the world of Bugs Rucker.
His wife was a wonderful lady, but we drove her nuts talkin' pool.

I saw Robert Junior Lockwood perform at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas back around mid 90-ish. I stayed up way late into the cold night sitting on the ground, wrapped up in a blanket with my wife to see this act of historic value!

Ahh, the memories!!!

OK Tony, next time we play you're feeding the jukebox. I'd hate to hear how many times you heard Stevie Ray live.

My old pal said they used to sneak him into an old oak cliff club when he was 16. I think Jimmy was probably of age at the time.

I saw him in 86 at Fair Park Texas Hall?

OK, can't tell you how many times I've seen BB. Muddy is high on my list as well.

Now if y'all can find em look for Climax Blues Band, FM Live album, song Seventh
Son.

Gotta mention Ricky Derringer who played with Edgar Winter as well.

Always liked Eric Burdon, especially his work as The Eric Burdon Band, Sun Secrets album.

Know he was mentioned, but Rory Gallagher is another of my favorites as well.

Hound Dog Taylor had 12 fingers

Another huge blues fan here, and someone who feels that every proper pool hall should have a nice collection. All good suggestions so far, but since you named Hooker specifically, here are some of the traditional and acoustic artists I have in my collection:

Robert Johnson
Son House
Blind Lemon Jefferson
Leadbelly
Bukka White
Bessie Smith
Elmore James
Sleepy John Estes
Mississippi John Hurt
Robert Jr. Lockwood
Muddy Waters
Howlin' Wolf
Willie Dixon
Magic Slim
Memphis Slim
Lightnin' Hopkins
Earl Hooker
Blind Sonny Terry
Pinetop Perkins
Brownie McGhee
Jimmy Rogers
Hound Dog Taylor
Big Mama Thornton
Sonny Boy Williamson II
Guitar Slim
Keb Mo
John Hammond
Lazy Lester
Anybody with the last name King
Anybody named Buddy Guy

Great, great list. An old Mississippi blues man I listen to a lot while I'm playing is Jimmy Reed.

I've seen BB numerous times, including one of his last concerts when he was really a shadow of his former self.

A few live clips, below, of BB in his prime. Just listen the huge voice he had:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOVU2nkxUMk

and the searing guitar on this clip from the same concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWLAAzOBoBI

On another front, via the wonders of YouTube and its software that took me from secular Sam Cooke to this.

Sam is one of the all time great voices, but his records tended to be highly produced, as was common in the era. Aside from his excellent Live of at Harlem Square Club record, I haven't found a great deal that shows his voice without the neat packaging. This is great (Sam only until about 8 mins in, then some new group that I skipped).

Shut up and take my money! Perfect list.

Do y'all wanna play a blues game?

If yes post just 1 youtube video. No words, no comments, just post the link.

Only rule is the people playing the game must watch the videos.

Then we can all vote on the best videos.

So post your favorite video of all time, or maybe post an obscure or unknown video that's buried in the youtube archives.

I'll start the game in the next post...

Boogie

Boogie Long, perhaps the best young blues guitarist in the country is a regular at Mike Black's pool room in Baton Rouge. boogie has been known to wager on occasion, lol !

Boogie is one of the best blues guitarists in the world period, I just had out here in California and I'm trying to get him to move here!! He'd be so much happier and more respected. This kid opened for BB King and is unreal! Such a great heart and plays half way decent also in pool.

He plays ok, to call him one of the best in the world is a bit of a stretch. He won a nationwide contest a few years back sponsored by Guitar Center that got him the BB King gig. Many thought a young man from Atlanta named Tony Sims should have won it. I agree with those people.

Why disappoint boogie is a blues player that loves pool more than anything. I agree with RL Burnside saw him twice, greatest blues show I ever seen. I've seen bb and muddy and many others and RL is god!! I'm just saying boogie has a heart for pool like few professionals.
