Bonus Ball

If someone invented a league to rival the NFL do you think they would show up at a NFL playoff game in January wearing their new jersey's and advertising their "new game".
I can't help but take that statement as disagreeing with the viability of expo-style exposure of bomus ball at the DCC...I wouldn't suggest anything other than a cooperative effort between the entities
Make Dora happy, fund the current 9ball, 10ball and 1pocket tournaments. Why support 20 pro's? Do you know how huge $1,000,000 added to tournaments PAYOUTS would help the economy?

I am all for keeping our Dora happy, but how is it the bonus ball folks' responsibility to fund anything that isnt theirs? Would you support 25% of your annual income being withheld to pay a pro player's expenses?

I agree Mr. Balls. It's not their responsibility to look after anything but their best interest. It's also up to me to look after my best interest and that is long one on one rotational races against top dogs. Hopefully all can profitably co exist but everyone will be competing for players. Like I said before, it just rubs me the wrong way for them to come in talking like they own what I have enjoyed for a long time. I can't really put it into better words. I apologize.

kwakaa...The real number is closer to 3 million. BB has 'been around' for almost 10 years. The answer to your second question is "not at all", if you're talking about the US economy. If you're talking about the poolplaying economy, the answer is still almost nothing...with the exception of a few pros.

this venture has to be well over $1,000,000 invested in this "new game".

I haven't watched Bonus Ball being played, but I'm ready for it. I'm glad to see someone (genius) step up to the plate and raise the pros to the level where they need to be.....playing each other only. Take 'em out of their comfort zone, let 'em ***** & moan with each other without all the sideliners, and get 'em rolling. I hope you BB guys stick to your guns like you've been doing. If the game of Bonus Ball doesn't work out, switch the game using the same concept. ;) Separate the hand-full of pro pool players from the thousands of wannabes and give us something to cheer about!

I agree with the idea that the BB players should be fanning out across America and the world, wherever they go and promoting Bonus Ball. Pool promoters for some unknown reason just WILL NOT embrace the barnstorming, circus-coming-to-town type of promotion that has worked so well for every other endeavor since before P.T. Barnum.

Costs of doing business

Scott, since you operated an APA league can you answer me this.

hypo: You operate an APA franchise. You have a 9ball league. 15 divisions. 10 teams in each division. Each league has 6 players.

$10*5*10*15=$7,500*50 weeks = $375,000 in weekly dues collected for the year.

League sends 5 teams to Vegas:

Hotel room $100 per night, 7 nights = $700 * 6 = $4200
Plane fare $700 per team member, 6 team members = $4200

Cost to go to vegas per team $8400 * 5 = $42,000.

WHERE DOES THE OTHER $333,000 GO? IS THIS A RICO CASE?

Bonus Ball does not effect me in any way. I wish them all the best. I have always wondered this about the APA. Can you answer that for me?

Scott can answer better since I have never owned an APA franchise but I would guess they would have expenses just like any other business. In my area we pay $55 per team per week $15 goes to the house.

$40*10*15=$6000*50 = $300,000 assuming no teams drop and fail to pay

Many franchises take between 5-20% of your gross sales for national events, marketing, support, websites etc. So figure on giving the APA corporate around $30,000.

Might find a deal on office space and utilities for $12000 per year. Two employees making $50,000 each costs you another $100,000 plus benefits such as healthcare throw in another $30,000. Insurance, marketing, legal fees and accounting you could add another $20,000.

So now you are at $108,000 and you haven't paid any federal or state business taxes yet or the many other expenses that come with running a business. If it was easy money everyone would be running pool leagues.

Larry Chiborak started designing this game from sctratch years before anyone outside of his city ever knew it exsisted. It was very crude and a six pocket game with scoring, like snooker! It did have one neat thing to it, every third shot, you had to go back to the Bonus Ball.

It was played with a crude scoreboard but it was still tougher to play then eight ball. Then Mike Massey suggested he make it a three pocket game to make it more diffucult to play for top players. Great suggestion!

Larry put the game away for many years. He was still playing it with his friends at a local and very successful billiard room called Triple B's. At this time I met Larry and had just started playing Snooker myself. I was tired of the break and run game that top amateurs play in Eight Ball. I wanted to be challenged more. The first time I played it, I loved the concept and hated the name! (Like a lot of people)

We worked with the top amateur players in Winnipeg for several years and developed the game as far as we could. We took the game to the US open and showed the professionals and they loved it immediately. We continued to conform the game to what the professionals wanted to see and we now have this game of today. Challenging, strategic and well structured. Yes, the game has been developed for over ten years.

So Bonus Ball is delaying the start of their season. What concerns me is that if it ever launches that it will end up landing on top of many established events.
Bonus Ball has it's fans in the form of the 20 salaried players on their roster. But my view is that if you want to play something a little more challenging than 8 ball or 9 ball or you are looking to watch something a bit more interesting then just play/watch snooker.

This isn't spoken out of malice and I really hope that it works out for the creators and the players.
But a few years ago some ingenious individual 'invented' Snooker Plus in the mistaken belief that the snooker world could not do without an extra two coloured balls (orange and purple were added).
They are nowadays only found in the billiard room of memorabilia collectors.
I fear the lifespan of BB will terminate when the money runs out. Still the pool professionals will have drawn another bucketful from another well.

This is exactly what I have been thinking and could not of written it any better.

The main difference between Snooker Plus and Power Snooker is Bonus Ball is unlike other pool games in structure. These Snooker games tried to be the second coming of Snooker. that is a real hard sell. Bonus Ball on the other hand is not like 10 Ball that is 9 Ball with some improvements. It's not 8 Ball with improvements. It's not like anything in pool but it's own game! It also certainly isn't Snooker which is very tough to play and it doesn't need a huge table and smallish balls to play.

Bonus Ball is for players of pool that are looking for something more challenging than running racks. Many pool players are fine with that and I am too, for a while. A Bonus Ball game can be run but it is a whole lot tougher than even the professional expected.

Im not really impressed with the construction delays but I have helped Larry with his game for four years now and I for one have always wanted to see something professional on television again in some form other than trick shooting. I have attended many Mosconi Cups and enjoy playing Nine Ball and Eight Ball. I have always loved pool but mostly I loved the team format! Bonus Ball the game is really fun to play. That has always been my message to pool players. If you don't care to try it and play it, I'm ok with that. I certainly won't be found on any forum calling down other games or making crude comments about others. I love all pool players because I love pool. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and encourage everyone to promote whatever game you play!!!
