bought a gc. need info on moving. please help!

The diamond black cushions are now being used on the diamond barboxes in place of Artimus.

They still use Artimus on their 9 foot tables.

The Diamond Blacks have not been out as long as Artimus, so no one knows the longevity of these cushions. They are also not as fast as Artimus cushions.

I guess you have to consider how much the savings is worth to you. I am sure that the Diamond Blacks are 150-200 dollars cheaper. Is that worth it, considering a cushion job, should be a once every 20 year event? If in 5 years those cushions start playing goofy, did you really save anything?

thats a good point, but it is still worth considering for me if the diamond blacks will cost me only 100 bucks or so (assuming no needed work on subrails) vs. the artimus rails costing 1300 bucks or more including the purchase price and needed work on subrails.
 
I would bet that your table needs sub-rail work regardless of what cushions you put on it.

Brunswick quality control was not the best in the world. My table. with the some of the most pristine rails Glen had seen on a GCII had pocket miters and down angles all over the map. The cushion nose height was not much better. Also my table came standard with the Brunswick Monarch cushions back in the day. As Glenn told me the Brunswick super-speeds are not a direct replacement for them as the sub-rail angle had to be modified because of differences in the cushions. (You cannot get the Monarch's anymore BTW)

The other thing to look at is how beat up the subrail ends are where the pocket facings are. If that area is really chewed up from recovers and play. Those subrails are going to have to be rebuilt. Putting the cushions and facings over damaged wood is not a good idea because the wood has lost it's natural stability.

This has been discussed at length in the Mechanics forum.

Point is if it is a GC it will need subrail work. There is lot's of good information on this site, and a lot of people who have run across the same things that you are seeing with your first GC. The point is not to make some of the same mistakes others had made in the past.

I would suggest the Diamond Black k55 rubber.

I have played on tables John Burns- Scruffy1 here on AZB- redid the subrails with the blacks and is was super nice.

I swear I am gonna have him redo mine, one of these daze.:o

you didn't tell me that scruffy1 was a scruggs fan! Man does he have some stories. We must have ended up on the phone for 45 minutes or so today.

im still trying to make a final choice on rails, but everything else sounded great!

IM SO CONFUSED. LOL

after talking with a friend, and great pool player, tonight, i am once again confused about what rails to go with!

he made a very good point. he asked me why i bought a GC. I told him because i've always loved them, and they play great. To that he responded, then why change the rails? Why not keep it all original?

after he said that, i started thinking. i've been making a lot of plans for this table, and setting up a lot of work to be done to it, to get it back to original perfect condition. why am i thinking about changing to a different type of rail and pro cut pockets???

Nah, you're not hopeless; you're just doing your due diligence. :thumbup:

Here's two big things to consider: Wanting to defer to RKC who is a walking/talking encyclopedia of knowledge on what to, and what not to do to a pool table - and this:

I did a local mechanic redo on my table about 4 or 5 years ago and for that I purchased new Brunswick Superspeed cushions. These cushions not only had an odd smell to them when they arrived, but, also, they held up poorly. They were made in China junk.

You can no longer get the original high quality rubber cushions that came with the early GC's. I think these were, in most cases, Monarch cushions, and they'd last 30 or 40 years. The new Chinese Superspeeds might give you 4 or 5 years of okay service before their downward spiral begins. Mine developed hard spots. :(

Tony has extended a nice offer for you to play on his table to see what you think. FYI, the Artemis (Artimus?) rubber is extremely high quality and made in Germany.

If it just comes down to dollars and cents, maybe the Diamond blacks would be a good compromise. If it were me, though, I'd look into where they are made, first.

Finally, a big final consideration is what condition your rail wood is in. I know Tony alluded to this in one of his posts. Between many years of use and, let's say, less skilled table mechanic's working on them, that wood takes a real beating. Having them rebuilt/calibrated is a huge positive.

KC and I had EXACTLY the same issues with our last experience with Brunswick SuperSpeeds.

If you want to go true FACTORY specs, make those corners 5.25 and it won't matter how slow the rubber is on them.
 
thanks for the input guys. one question, the gc III's originally came with superspeeds right? have they always been made in taiwan or is that something that has changed?
 
Table or the cushions?

Like most everything else in this country outsourcing is the name of the game.

There was a time when GC's were made in the USA, not any more.

As far as the cushions, there are no rubber plantations that I am aware of in the USA, so they were always made overseas. I don't know when they switched to the current provider of the cushion rubber.
