What were the break cues before the Sledgehammer. I remember the Meucci which was a 2 piece butt and a shaft and the Huebler break jump cue that had 2 dots to line up when screwed together. Both these cues did not jump very well. There was the Bungee tips with "THE LEATHER DUST SPRINKLED INTO THE PHENOLIC". I invented the It's George Jump Cue back in the 80's, but it was only for jumping, it had a leather tip, no break cue by It's George. What else was there back in the 80's and 90's before the jump shot became a shot that everyone could do because of the one piece ferrule/tip.

I remember Joe Porper selling jump/break cues in the early 90's. I had the Huebler jump/break and it didnt perform well at all.

I got my JOSS jump cue in about 92....but it's just a jumper. Not a break cue.


And BTW it's really just a jump butt, it uses a regular JOSS shaft, no special ferrule etc.

The first I know of was by Jay Flowers the cue case maker. He designed it and it was made for him by Huebler. It later became a part of the Huebler line and was the first jump/break cue. Although not really that great it did demonstrate there was a market and jump/break cues began appearing on the market from other makers. Just to date it I wold guess about 1983 because Jay gave me one to try. The prototype may have been made for him by Wayne Gunn of Tampa but that is a guess since they were friends. Steve Cook another friend of Jay's had one of the first ones as well around the same time.

I should add that sometime back doing a patent search I found a cue that was designed for when a wall or pole was in the way. It had a second joint about half way down the butt. It was basically what we see today as jump/break cues although designed for another purpose.

Rick Howard started making the Mace Custom Jump Break around 1986 or 1987. I think Rick was the first Custom Maker to build and sell Jump Break Cues.

Regarding the jump cue the first I saw Pat Fleming had. It didn't have a phenolic tip and ferrule but the secret was the weight. It was a regular 57 inch cue but when you picked it up it weighted only like 10 ounces. Later when the combination of light weight and the phenolic tip were put together the jump cue of today was born. The light weight was achieved though by making the cue short and thin. I also saw Rafael Martinez with a house cue that weighed like 10 ounces years ago that he was jumping everything with. Again, until you picked it up you didn't know the secret, it looked like any other cue.

I traded my Predator BK2 for a sledgehammer and love the performance of the sledge. I usually use it full length for jump shots unless the ball I'm jumping is really close.

Anyone remember Bobby Doss offering jump cue modifications to your existing cue?
A lot of disappointed customers fell for that deal. If I recall he bored out the butt and had a replaceable plug you would pull out when wanting to jump. Good way to ruin a cue lol.
 
I had a jump cue that was from Nick Varner in the 90s. I think it may have been a Joss? It had 2 or 3 points....basically looked like butt of a cue stick.
 
I have a 24 oz. Joss Boss that I think I acquired in the late '70s or early '80s. It was the first dedicated break cue I had ever seen.

The cues I remember that were made for breaking prior to 1990 were:

Joe Porper - j/b sneaky
Rick Howard - custom j/b cues
McDermott (this one is fuzzy, but I believe it was called the Black Mac with an "impregnated butt" )
