In recent times, Keith McCready has been benched, so to speak, when it comes to pool. There's a multitude of reasons for it, which I won't go into as it ain't the purpose of my thread! :p

Over the past 6 or so years, my curiosity has been piqued when it comes to American pool. Pool here in the States has quite a different history and track record than other countries, IMHO! Gambling used to be a way of life, much more so than today's tournament soldier environment. Action happened on the spur of the moment in days gone by, but in recent times, most players make appointments to play each other for games of stake, though they seem few and far between compared to the '60s, '70s, and '80s. ;)

American pool is unique, and there is a plethora of players that make up the very fabric of American pool, many of whom some folks have not even heard of and perhaps never will. These are the American Road Players, and is one of the reasons why America attracted quite a few of our international bethren of players in the first place. Apparently, at that time, pool shined brighter here than elsewhere in the world. That was then, though.

Keith participated in an iPodcast interview last night, and listening to him speak about pool as he knew it and knows it today, it only reinforces my present-day opinion that pool truly is entering a new era. Where it's going to go, nobody knows, but it is changing. The IPT, love it or hate it, did provide a platform that players had never seen before, and it sure was good while it lasted. Dave Matlock told me that he was going to take his IPT winnings and put a down payment on a house for him and his fiance, and there are other good stories about what some IPT competitors did with their winnings. Some IPT players truly did benefit from the brief time that the IPT was here in full bloom.

Coming up next month, there will be a battle between Bar Table Kings in Olathe, Kansas, July 18-22, 2007. To date, Hall of Famer Buddy Hall, 2005 U.S. Open Champion Gabe Owen, Shane "South Dakota Kid" Van Boening, Money Player James Walden, and Filipinio champions Marlon Manalo and Dennis Ocollo are officially on the player roster of this $3,000 entry fee event. Somebody is going to go home a happy camper! This is what pool is all about, the great ones meeting in one place, battling it out, and the best player wins. Pool at its finest! I would like to see more events like this where somebody will enjoy a good payday when the dust settles. If they get 32 players at $3,000 a pop, it will be a great day in the history of pool, with no outside sponsor monies either. How about that?!

Dan Tull of Shooters Billiards in Olathe, Kansas, is the host of this great event, and it all began with an idea that, hey, let's have a big pool tournament where the players will enjoy a large payday. Well, by George, I think they've done it. I can't wait to see how this unfolds.

The Action Report, a new website geared towards providing LIVE feeds and updates, is going to be there on site for the unfortunate inquiring minds back home. This truly sounds like it is going to be fun! Bravo to Shooters, Dan Tull, TheActionReport.com staff, and the players themselves. Build it and they will come! :)

Another name that most people would be thrilled to see on that roster would the Earthquake's, Keith needs to knock the dust off of that Madden cue and take a shot at this thing. The World Has STILL Got The 8

Believe me, Keith is chomping at the bit to get over there to Olathe, and we've been in contact with several folks about it. His Madden cue is a weapon of mass destruction, and on a bar table, NOBODY has to like it if Keith's hitting 'em! That's a fact! ;)

Things on the homefront at this time are not conducive to just taking off for Olathe, but we're still working on whether it is a doable option at this time. I will NEVER not attend a tournament that Keith is competing in ever again. Been there, done that, and I will never allow it to happen!

Olathe sure does sound SWEET, though!

Hi JAM... I do hope the director of this event will have an admission charge. I think it is time for the audience to make their donation towards a "REAL TOUR". Imagine this event happening 26 times a year (every other week) in Pool Rooms across the country.

Pool Gear & Equipment makers, such as myself, might/could very well make their appearance too, with a percentage of sales going to the proprietor & the Tournament Pot.

Maybe even have a short race Pro-Am Tournament.

If this could actually become REALITY, big time names like BUD, Frito-Lay, Miller, Coke & other concessionares might want to help. Who knows....?

Maybe your opening salvo, "make it & they will come", is truly in order.

You know, Ceebee, you definitely got a valid point and I think hit the nail right on the head! :)

To date, the pool industry members, if you will, have only invested so much into professional pool. Their interests lie elsewhere, and professional pool tournaments do not seem to be on the top of the list. I mean, after all, it is a fact that most of their income doesn't come from professional pool. It is no wonder that professional pool as a sport is considered no better than hot dog eating contests and lawn mower races on ESPN.

The BCA -- not the BCA League -- the Billiard Congress of AMERICA organization hosts a once-a-year tournament for professional pool, and this Billiards Congress of AMERICA reserves half of the player roster for foreign players. The ranking system to compete in this event is a joke, but a topic for another thread. Professional pool does not seem important to flourish and thrive to the BCA organization -- not the BCA League -- in my opinion.

Here's a pool room owner, Dan Tull, who decided to make something happen. He came up with the idea and is going to sacrifice his normal everyday income as well as his time while this event transpires. If he charges a nominal spectator fee, that would be okay by me. If the players come through and the roster fills up, I will consider this a huge American success and advancement for pool as a sport.

It is about damn time something like this happened. Bravo to all who are building it. I can't wait for it to happen. This is exciting! :p

By the way, I guess I will give a shameful plug for my inaugural iPodcast experience. Keith's interview is up now on http://www.TheActionReport.com, and at the end of the interview, I got a chance to speak to Big Chad Pollman for a few minutes! Man, I never realized how much of a Southern accent I have! :p

I thought the interview was a success. The audio quality is EXCELLENT. It is entitled "Big Chad Pollman interviews pool legend Keith McCready. Listen to one of the Legends of the game in his own voice tell stories of his biggest scores and best moves in a 50 minute interview."

Cool??...You seem to applaud a format with no sponsors where the players simply play for each others money. How long do you think such a formayt could last? I suggest no more than 3 tournaments before the participants come to their senses. This is bad idea except as a occasional novelty event. Totally unsustainable!JMHO

A little too far or us to travel but it is a great idea. I think $10.00 admission would be good for the sport. If something is a little dear it makes it all that much sweeter. I hope the Action report has a way to determine the number of viewers as this could be useful information later.

At some point theActionReport might consider some fee to watch and this too could help support other tournaments.

Sponsers can kick in after the players get it together. Power to the people -- they will make it happen.

Thank you for your contribution to the thread! :)

I applaud the man who created this event with no sponsors, more so than applauding the format with no sponsors.

As far as the players simply playing for each others monies, in this event, unlike other events where a percentage of the player entry fees are used to cover expenses for the running of the event, ALL MONIES ARE GOING TO THE TOURNAMENT PURSE!

One day, a young man by the name of Ray Kroc decided to create a take-out joint which served inexpensive food. Everybody told him he was nuts and that it would be "totally unstainable." Well, years later McDonald's was born.

Pool industry and other organizations haven't seemed to have been able to invest in professional pool in an effort to elevate it as a sport. Rather, they are interested in elevating their brand name, and the audience they target is quite different than the professional pool arena.

If this one man in Olathe's idea catches on and it is a success, I predict better things down the road, to include sponsor-added monies, but for now, this is the best thing that has happened to pool, and we will all witness history in the making. JMHO, FWIW!

Bravo to Dan Tull for his sacrifice, dedication, and time spent in making this happen. When TheActionReport.com staff brings this event home to us all, real-time live, front and center, you may come away with a different view, I hope! :)

Dan Tull has been making this sacrifice for years & has always turned it into a success. I would think that his pool room has had more yearly, big regional tournaments than any other pool room in the USA over the past 15 or so years.

When I was younger & much shorter in the pocket, I once thanked Dan for not charging at the door as other pool rooms were doing at the time. He accepted my thank you & said that he makes enough on cue raffles during his tournaments that he didn't feel the need to charge at the door. If that makes more people come, the better. Guess that is the reason why his pool room has bleachers in it during his tournaments. So many people, only way they can all sit. I remember this now and when I go to Olathe, I always play even though I have no chance. I always eat 2-3 meals a days in his pool room & don't walk out the door looking for somewhere else to spend my money.

Dan has been doing things first for years. The impromptu "Gomez Challenge" is still one of the greatest events I have ever seen in pool. It was a long time ago, so I am sure I will get some of the particuliars wrong but....David Gomez showed up in Olathe, told Dan to put $10,000 in his safe & he was going to play the 10 best players in the building a set for $1000 a piece. Dan turned it into the Gomez Challenge, and it became a single elimination, $1000 entry fee tournament. Matlock played the best bar pool I have seen in my life & ran over the field. Races to 15, I don't think anyone got past 6. until he actually played Gomez in the finals & Gomez got to 9.

I will surely be in Olathe during the ring games. If you love pool, anyone should try to rearrange their life for 4 -5 days so they can attend.

He just may have a flashback. And then no one has to like it. How long has it been since his very high finish at the U.S. Open? Not that long ago.

Actually, Ray Kroc was involved in setting up franchises for businesses, but was always looking for a "get rich quick" scheme himself. The McDonald brothers are the ones who worked to make the first McDonald's successful.

And just to clarify, nobody ever told the McDonald's brothers they "were nuts" for their idea. Fast food used to be a MUCH better investment for the individual investor than it is now. Why? Because there wasn't one on every corner, so if you started a fast food stand it was grade-A guaranteed money.

Ray Kroc was trying to sell the McDonald's brothers milkshake machines for their business. He saw customers lined up for hundreds of yards at the business. He sold the brothers on the idea of franchising.

The McDonald's brothers were hucksters, and the only goal they had for their business was to make a million dollars. Ray Kroc got them started on the franchise path, then got a loan to buy them out for a cool million. He did this after he saw that it was a guaranteed moneymaker.

All I am saying is don't make Ray Kroc out to be some hard working visionary. He was just a guy who was in the right place at the right time, and took advantage of two back-woods brothers who didn't know they were sitting on a gold mine.
That being said, I think the future of American pool for the foreseeable future has to rely on roomowners and benefactors who can afford to sweeten the pot with no need for a return on the money. Heck, if I won a big lottery, I'd probably support 5 or 6 pro tourneys a year.

Pool is what it is right now, I guess. It would be great if the top 50 American players could all make enough on the game to have a nice income, but it's just not that way.

That being said, Keith should remember that he can easily make 70K-80K a year booking exhibitions and giving lessons, without a doubt. Keith could easily book 300-400 dollars worth of lessons, and a $300-$500 exhibition every single place he travelled to. So Keith is one of the few people that has nooooooo business whatsoever bemoaning the fate of professional pool. He is one of the few people that can make a GOOD living at the game. Something(one?) seems to be holding him back from that, though.

Thanks for the history of McDonald's hamburgers. I used the Ray Kroc analogy without doing a thorough research. I had thought it was Ray Kroc who initiated the idea originally, though, and not the McDonald brothers. :o

Not yet, but with innovative folks like Dan Tull and Chad Pollman coming up with a different approach to the current status quo, a change just may be a coming! Pool needs more folks just like 'em. :)

Nothing or nobody is holding Keith back from pool. Sometimes in life, there comes a time when you have to think about your well-being, health, and peace of mind. Pool is a very tough racket, and it is a rich man's high, IMHO. I did the two, three, and four tournaments a month tour, and after expending $35,000 per annum, it doesn't take an Alan Greenspan to realize that one must choose their priorities in life very carefully after you hit the 50-year mark. Even if you win a couple of these tournaments, you're still stuck from the ones you didn't come in first, second, or third place in. The tournament payouts in the year 2007 do not provide enough income to play professional pool full time unless you have a stakehorse with very deep pockets or a pool industry sponsor. For the rest of the players, it's a tough road to hoe.

Though it may seem like an Easy Street to travel around the country and give lessons, not every great player can be a good teacher. They are two different skill sets. Meanwhile, you still must keep a roof over your head and put food in your mouth. Being a gypsy or living out of a suitcase ain't all what it's cracked up to be, and believe me, there ain't no place like home! :D
