Cabs in Vegas

Just to give everyone a heads up that is going to Vegas. Tourism is down a bit this year, so a few of the cab drivers are trying to make a little extra. When we arrived and got into our cab, I told the driver we're going to the Riv and we want to go down Paradise Dr...Not the interstate route. He says there is construction and lights and heavy traffic and will cost us more. I said I want to go down Paradise that I know it's faster and cheaper. I could tell he was irritated, but we went that route. There wasn't much construction, and our tab was $16.90 for the ride. We gave him $21, which is nearly a 25% tip and he got mad, saying we're supposed to tip 50% for the ride. Bellman finally made him leave.
I talked to the cabbie on the way back to the airport, and he said the guy was trying run up the tab. Paradise is definitely the fastest route to the Riv.
We went to the airport at 3:30am, and the ride was $14 as there was no traffic at all. Don't let them gouge you for a few extra $$$$
Last year I wasn't paying attention, and the fare was $21 by going the Interstate route. It may only be 4 or $5, but I don't like getting cheated.
Have a safe trip everyone.

$8000 - $21 = $7979

I think you will be okay, this year! ;)

Point taken thanks for the input. Times are tough and in a town like Vegas people always find ways to cheat the system :D

When I lived in Boston, cabbies were always doing this. If you don't know your way around you can really get screwed. I specifically tell them the route in New York as well as I've had some problems there. It IS only a few dollars but I feel the same way - don't want to get screwed. I have to go to Vegas for a User Conference and stay in the Venetian and I've never been before...that should be fun.

I did the same thing this year. Told the cab driver to go via Paradise. $17.90 with traffic to the Riv., $15.50 to the airport from the Riv. at 4:30 PM.

Last year, I had a driver take me down the strip to the street by the Wynn, turn right and took me to I 15 (towards Los Angeles), then down to Tropicana lane and out to the airport. Price was $20.00. I yelled at him at the airport and the Traffic Taxi Authority heard me and reported him. At that time, it was only $13.00 to the airport.

I had wrote down his name, company and reported him also when I got back home. You have to really watch those guys.

Folks, don't waste your time hopping in a taxi if you don't have to. There are coaches available where a bunch of folks get on and go from hotel to hotel. Much cheaper. You might even sit next to a pretty girl. hehehe

It's been awhile

but I took a Cab from the back of the Circus Circus to the side entrance of the Riveria (across the street) and it was $6.20.

And before you say anything, it was because of my heavy luggage.

last time i was in vegas (also it happened to be my first time), i didn't know much about the best ways to get around. My friends and I took the monorail all the way to the end at sahara and then we got into a cab and wanted to go to old vegas. The cab driver took us all the way to the interstate then after one exit he got off the interstate then drove around to get to old vegas, it was so stupid, on the way back from old vegas we went down one road and it was half the price of the cab right there. The cab driver from the airport was nice but he was trying to pimp some girls out to us haha

I went from the Riviera to the Wynn & the cab driver went behind the Riviera, down a back street, up a side street and then out to the strip. Cost $8.90.
Every other cab driver would go out in front of the Riviera and do a U turn towards the Wynn. Cost $5.50

I mentioned to the driver sarcastically that it would have been faster to do the U turn move & he said, "Oh yeah, guess you are right" and then tried to change the subject. I asked him how long he had been a cab driver in Vegas & was told 3 years. He knew what he was doing in running up the tab.

I wrote down his cab # but never turned it in figuring it would do no good. I wonder what happened to the complaint that klockdoc filed the year before.

Good point. I was wondering the same thing. I was looking for the information from my emails, but, will have to search through other files.

Anyway, if you have the information, here is the web site. Click on the complaint button at the top. http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/

If you do not know what the cab company name is, you can search by cab number or by color of cab, (white roof/maroon bottom, etc), at the photo on the main page or here, http://taxi.state.nv.us/TaxiCabInfo.htm

Bull that is Bull a 50% Tip.

Fortunate for me, I now know the town inside out and backwards, so the Cabbies can't do it to me anymore ... However, I "paid" for those lessons dearly in the old days ...

This happens in Hawaii all the time. I lived there for a while and had to direct the cabbies to take the shortest route. In Vegas last Saturday, I also had a driver tell me that Paradise was "closed" and he had to go down the strip back to the airport. I guess their salaries are based on commission, but I tip less if I know they are giving me the runaround

Maybe I shouldn't say this

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but I will say the cabbie who took us to the airport, said if you know for a fact a driver took the long route, when you arrive, refuse to pay him. If he insists, tell him you're calling the Taxi Authority and reporting him. They take that stuff seriously out there according to our last driver. And the one who drove us to the airport last year told me the same thing.
Now that I've said this publicly, some cheap pool player will let them take him the long route, and try not to pay.
THIS IS JUST WHAT I HEARD, SO DON'T BLAME ME IF IT AIN'T TRUE.....

They should never take the Strip, unless you request it for sight seeing. Industrial dr. runs right behind Circus Circus. It is just like Paradise dr, except less traffic. If I know they are screwing me, they get NO tip at all. The drivers get a percentage of the fare, plus all tips. Plus they think if the fare is higher, they get a higher percentage tip.
Get a map if you plan to go downtown, or to another casino. They're in all those little Today in Vegas magazines. Casinos are numbered on most of the maps. Food is more expensive this year, and it will all add up quickly. Might only be a couple of bucks more, but it's your money.

Cabbies do this everywhere! They will always take the long route if possible. In Reno, they always want to take the freeway the long way around to downtown and add 25-30% to the fare.

Most taxi drivers pay a set fee for their car every day, like $75-100 a day. Whatever they make over that they get to keep. They want to have as many big fares as possible. If you catch a cab at an airport and it is a short ride, they will be visibly upset. They have to get back in line when they return to the airport.

Like in Louisville, when we arrive for the DCC, and tell the cabby to take us to the Executive West, which is about a mile away. They get pissed. When I lived in Marina Del Rey, which is close to the L.A. airport, the cab driver was angry when I told him my destination. They want long fares!

Okay, a few tricks to saving money. Take buses whenever possible. I can take a bus for 50 Cents from my house in Lawndale to the L.A. airport. I only have to walk two blocks to the bus stop. The cab would cost me minimum $25. HELLO!!!

When you arrive in a casino town like Vegas or Reno, catch the shuttles offered by the various hotels. If I'm going to the Sands in Reno, I catch any downtown shuttle, and walk the last couple of blocks. I may tip the shuttle driver a dollar or two. And save a $20 cab fare!

Once again, please don't tell anyone I told you. :)

My last trip to vegas that I used a taxi I told the driver NOT to take the tunnel. He did anyway and assured me it was much cheaper that way. The fare was $10 more expensive than every other time I go to the same hotel 2-3 times a year. I knew he was full of s**t. I get to the hotel and paied with exact change for the fare. I have never not tipped but I knew he was lying to my face so I screwed him right back. It made me happy to see him get pissed when I didden't tip. My girlfriend started to pull out some cash to give to the driver and I pushed it back into her purse and said let's go.
This past year in valley forge we took a cab from sullivans to the expo center. The cabbie drove completely around the mall first and then weaved up and down side streets on the way back to the hotel. I was laughing as I could not believe it. Samm said I guess we are taking the senic route. The cabbie said something like I am sorry I but this route is faster. We still tipped him a couple bucks but he would have gotten a $20 tip had he just drove the road the hotel is on. Oh well, those are the only times I know for suer that the cabby was trying to screw me. Chris.
