Playing money match 8 or 9 ball and your opponent wants to shoot the wrong ball but you see he's about to make a foul. Do you tell him before or after the shot? I told my opponent in a tourney not long ago to stop as he lined up the 6 but should have been shooting the 5. He thanked me and then beat me...I know it was ethically correct but was I a dumbass since it was a money match (not too much)? Mitch

I think it's good sportsmanship and the gentleman's way of playing.

I would definitely tell my opponent before he or she shoots.

I wouldn't want to win that way. Just the way I am.

Agreed! I always tell people when I see then lining up for the wrong ball. Only time I wouldn't say anything is if I can't tell because the next ball in line is close enough that I can't see them aiming wrong.

I agree as well. In acs its considered unsportsman like to knowingly let your opponent shoot the wrong balls (in 8 ball) Another like question, do you call your own foul if you committ it? I know guys who just walk away and hope you didnt see. Not my style to each his own I guess.

It is worth it sometimes. I play in a local tournament on Tuesday night. It is 8 ball tournament. I ran the rack and was shooting the 8 ball in, only thing was that there was another of my balls on the table. The guy let me shoot it and of course he won the game, because I shot the 8 ball in early.

A few weeks later, I am playing the same guy and it is his turn at the table. He has stripes, but lined up on a solid. I stopped him and politely told him he was stripes. He says "man after me not telling you about the 8 ball two weeks ago, I can't believe you told me that I was about to screw up".

I then told him "that I would not feel right winning that way". He called me an asshole and said I was just trying to get in his head. I guess I did, he has not beat me since.

it's funny how everyone always calls a foul . followed by "if i knew you were gonna shoot the wrong ball i would have said something" or " i wasnt paying attention or i would have said something" lulz

You shake hands before your match and say ... don't tell me if I'm shooting the wrong ball, cause I'm not gonna tell you! Smile and play.

If you didn't go over that specifically, I'd tell them, they'd say thanks, and you say, my pleasure, the next one is on you though...

It would depend on who I'm playing and the amount we're playing for. League play or tournament I will tell you unless you're an (insert your own word here).

I dont understand???

If you are playing for MONEY way would you tell the guy not to foul?

That thinking is a two-way street....
...if you tell me I'm shooting the wrong ball...I'm going to hand you the cue-ball....
....'cause I don't want to win THAT way either.

I am responsible for my own decisions.

If I am playing a friend I tell them. In enemy territory no way. I can play it off to make it look like I just noticed. You either hustle or get hustled...pretty simple.

If you have to cheat to win, you didn't really win.

Sportsmanship is essential.

I think you should google the word 'cheat'.....
...NOT instructing your opponent is NOT cheating.

In a refereed match, if the ref told a player he was shooting the wrong ball....
...he would be fired.

You got that right!!

I backed a guy for a nice piece of change..., the guy his was spotting shot the 8 in before the 7, he was getting the 8 and got to the hill first and clearly got over amped.

Now if my man would have stopped him and said "hey your shooting the wrong ball"
we would have had a problem.

Do you interrupt your opponent and point out the flaws you see in his fundamentals? Of course you don't.

Pool is a combination of physical and mental skills. Both are very important and neither is your job to police for your opponent in a game with anything on the line.

I very rarely shoot the wrong ball but I do miss. Should I get a redo because my opponent saw me steer the ball when I missed? Should you remind your opponent to chalk up or let them try again if they miscue?

It's my skill set against theirs. That includes everything.

To all those saying that it is unsportsmanlike or cheating to not tell him I have one question-
If you see him playing a tough shot because he missed seeing the obvious safety that could be a game winner, will you stop him and point out the safety to him? If not, why not? It's the same thing. (o.k., two questions)

If player points out that opponent is about to shoot wrong ball...is that a 'coaching foul', awarding BIH to opponent?

Situational ethics. For fun, social league, a friend....tell them. If opponent is on your sh1t list...notice after the fact.;)

Let's go one step further. By the same "sportsmanship" reasoning, if your opponent fails to tell you you're on two fouls, should you concede the game if you get a third foul?
Also, in APA play, if one tells a teammate they're going for the wrong ball, does that count as a time-out?
