Pagulayan silences critics
By RONNIE NATHANIELSZ
World Pool Champion Alex ?The Lion? Pagulayan has effectively silenced the critics who circulated a text message after he won the prestigious World Pool Masters Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas by winning an epic race-to-100 showdown against touted American sensation Shane Van Boening also in Las Vegas .
Inside Pool Magazine correspondent Samm Diep reported ?Same story, different game? as 2004 champ Pagulayan who came back to defeat 2001 World Pool Champion Mika ?The Iceman? Immonen in the Masters finals 8-6 pulled off an incredible comeback on the final day of a grueling match that lasted a total of over 23 hours to pocket another $20,000 in the ActionReport.com (TAR) pit.
Pagulayan trailed the smooth-stroking Van Boening behind an excellent break from the start and at one point was down by 23 racks going into the final day. But the
diminutive Filipino roared back to grab the lead for the first time 93-92 before a 7-2 windup gave him a 100-94 triumph.
Diep noted that ?neither player had missed a ball for hours, giving the packed room a rivalry they?ll be talking about for years.? Ultimately it became apparent that the momentum shifted even as Van Boening attempted to regain his lead but some fatal errors eventually cost him the match.
In a post match interview monitored by Viva Sports, Pagulayan said ?I am more happy than when I won the World Pool Masters because I was behind by 22 games and the people behind me kept asking themselves can Alex pull it off one more time and said to myself, if I get a chance I am going to do whatever I can (to win.)?
When asked about the comeback Pagulayan explained ?I?m the kind of player who is a slow starter and the more I play, the longer I play the better I get especially when I?m down.?
Pagulayan said ?I am the kind of guy who thinks while I?m playing. I want to play a race-to-100 straight-up to tell you the truth. I don?t like to play three days just because I am a very, very slow starter. The first night I was down 13 games, the second night I was down 23 games, today I was down 13 games and I don?t know how I did it.?
The victory by Pagulayan reminded pool fans of the epic battle between Efren "Bata" Reyes and Earl "The Pearl" Strickland in a small but plush Hong Kong bar in 1996 when Reyes played some magical shots to come back from 23 racks down to eventually win the race-to-120 also over three days 120-117 and pocket the winner-take-all prize of $100,000 put up by the late multi-millionaire Robert " Bob" Moore.
