Not to split hairs here but I thought Buddy did a good acting job considering the circumstances.Buddy had a tough job to do with SM struggling.
Consider the 8 ball shot,If Buddy draws back for shape on the 9 he will leave SM an easier shot on the 8 but if he rattles the 8 then he might hook him if he draws behind the 9.
Don't really have an opinion on the dump, but if it were such, why wouldn't Buddy just hit the seven ball a touch fat? Why would he go to the trouble of trying to hit a perfect shot to both make the 7-ball and scratch in the side? Seems like a high risk way to go about it when all he had to do was hit the seven fat, draw the cue all to the rail, and leave Mike an easy layout.

Stupid Question of the Day:
have Buddy et al, sued Jay for libel?
.
Well.... for the sake of discussion...keep in mind that this is simply a discussion.
Jay's statements are inconsistent. In one of them he indicates that he "knew something was up but was powerless to do something about it" when refereeing the finals.
Now, as referee for the event and as plugged-in as Jay seems you would think that he would have seen the dumping previously and put a stop to it before the finals. So it appears that perhaps Jay did not actually know anything prior to the finals.
That said all you have is his observation from the finals and whatever conversation he reports having with the manager of the sports book afterward. Hardly conclusive evidence of a dump.
As for Earl, what was his alleged statement again? And is this statement on record FROM him or is it someone else saying that Earl said something?
IF Earl says that he was asked to dump then that is certainly a possibility. But that doesn't mean that there WAS a subsequent dump. In any event it would be Earl's testimony against seven other people. I am not saying Earl is lying, I am saying Earl has no first hand knowledge that a dump occurred and we don't have as far as I know any statement from Earl himself accusing his fellow professionals of felonies.
And to be clear, what we are talking about here are felonies. Fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. Probably the statute of limitations has run out on it but these are actual crimes you all want to put on the shoulders of Buddy Hall, Mike Lebron, Nick Varner and the other players who were allegedly a part of this.
It's NOT a rematch between Buddy and Mike, that's for sure. LoL :smash:
I didn't know anything for sure until it was over, but there were already rumors of bets being made on Lebron prior to the event starting. I had my suspicions and then the last match kind of made it conclusive for me. But the real evidence was yet to come. After I heard the whole story I knew for certain what had transpired. Maybe these guys are mad at me for snitching on them but I wasn't the only one who knew. Ask Allen Hopkins? He knows but is too diplomatic to speak publicly.
Like I said it really makes no difference now and I'm not without sin myself. But this was different, pool on national TV with serious money on the line. Very poor judgement to do business in that spot. They all should have known better and only one player did.
just shows how stupid the pro players are. they already had the 50,000 split up. so to get 20 to 1 instead of say 6 to one on a great player who could take it off and wouldnt be suspect winning, they get greedy and put the worst player up to win.
after they see he is dogging it they just need to beat him and forget about the side bet. but they are so stupid and greedy they have to make themselves look like thieves for it all.
The PCA (professional cue sports association) did all the men's ESPN Events (except for Matt Braun's events) between 96 and 99.....this equaled thousands of international hours of coverage (the WPBA did several evens as well, and we did one big one together). We also did several events on PRIME SPORTS as well.
Gary Morgenstein of ESPN told me I was on ESPN over 600 hours myself in those years......granted these weren't all "prime time" spots, but they were a HUGE commercial for pocket billiards and the entire industry benefited considerably.
Thanks for the legwork. I believe the professor is beyond repute.John,
Here are Earl's alleged statements according to R.H. Gilmer, room owner, on the Southern Billiards site.
After watching the video we can all see that Mr. Gilmer's recollection of events is a little off but that doesn't change his recollection of the conversation with Earl.

Its seems for some reason, that players who are well known to dump, are also the worse actors while doing it. I know of a couple that backs this claim up, as they would wake up the dead while dumping. You would think after the first 100, they would have it down pat , instead they get worse!
CJ, you have a idea of what happened? What's your opinion?
So, now you're saying that Vegas was in on the dump?We never understood the 20/1 odds and why they ("Vegas"} would keep this ludicrous line up on the board.....especially for more than a day or two. This seemed very odd, and if you know how Vegas operates, they seldom make such a lopsided line and keep it....they usually change it asap.
So, now you're saying that Vegas was in on the dump?
