Chapter 5, Not Giving up on the Road

The past couple nights have been productive, Yesterday morning I started off helping this guy install a granite countertop, I helped him cut and move it then put it in a bathroom, at the end of 4 hours he paid me $30, that really helped me out since he knew I was pretty bust.


Then last night I went to slick willies and left $100 richer.

Today I left Slick Willies $95 richer than I entered.

Tomorrow I play in the 2nd chance tournament with $500 added at 10 AM.

My bankroll is already back to 20% of what it was before I went busted in Houston.

After the tournament tomorrow in Katy I may hang around houston for a little bit or I may head back to oklahoma for a bit before heading to Laffayette LA White diamond tournament on March 29.

Just depends on where I feel I can make the most money, I thought about giving the pasadena tournament one more try next weekend, but not really sure.

While I was at the major pool tournament in Katy TX all day and away from the internet, the thread was moved, which is fine it had a bunch of stuff in it not related to my road trip, which this thread and my future book is about.

It was moved to NPR.

It contained topics that Rhea brought up but decided that they did not pertain to pool.

Namely, certain statements that proved that Rhea was not being totally truthful in her posts.

When a Thread gets moved and the OP starts another with the same title. I doubt that it will last long either.

Whatever, the same arguments in the moved thread will most likely end up here in no time.

Why on Earth would you go to the White Diamond tourney? Save your money.

Stay wherever you're at when that weekend comes and blow $50 on scratch off's tickets. That is a much better plan, cheaper too.

You may know or not, Herman got a hearing aid last Fri. So just walk up and start moving your mouth! Pool players are inherently cruel. Did you pick up any pearls of wisdom from Herman? He is there every day, he should get on the payroll and be the House Geezer!

For once take some advice! Saw is right it will be a wast of your money. A promising horse goes for about 1600-5000 $ and then it's still a dead gamble wether they'll cash.
 
Well unless you already paid your entry... Don't waste a trip......that tournament fills up the week before the tournament starts.. Hence why entry's are asked to be paid in advanced...
 
Getting payed $30 here and $50 there and going right to the tables with that money seems such a backwards thing to do.
At the beginning of your story when you traveled with Gene, you seemed to have some support on the forum, but as things have progressed it seems that almost everyone making a comment are worried for you and see your choice in a negative way.

I can`t help thinking that taking any job you can get, will give you more money and more securety, than your current situation.
Getting a steady job in a town where you can take lessons from a pool pro and maybe even getting your own table seems to be the only logical way to go if your goal really is becomming a better pool player.

Ah, the book deal. Who plays you in the Lifetime or Spike TV movie?
 
Your late 30's is not the time to start chasing your pool dream. I'm a few years younger than you and I can't even fathom at this stage in my life having a net worth of a few hundred bucks and wondering what I was going to do on a day to day basis....and hoping to scrape a few bucks together on the local pool tournament trail. That sounds like an absolute nightmare to me.

Here is my unsolicited advice for future success.

1. Go find the best job that you qualify for. If it isn't your dream job right away, don't worry...they say the best time to start looking for your "next" job is when you start your current job. And I don't advise working in the pool room. That would suck working where you wanted to be playing/hanging out. Separate the two. Find a job with the best benefits you can find.

2. When you're grinding away at this new job and feeling discouraged sometimes because, yes, sometimes working is boring, and you have managers that are jerks, and it isn't your "dream" of being in the tournament spotlight, think about the benefit of being able to support yourself, contribute to society at large, and not being a burden to others.

3. Don't do drugs. None.

4. Don't over-indulge in alcohol.

5. Start investing 10% minimum of every check into a 401K. Before doing anything else pay yourself first. Some companies will match you up to 10%. That is free money towards your retirement.

Follow this advice and in a few years you'll have a nice little apartment (maybe you'll have purchased your own house, where you could put a pool table), a little money in the bank, your own car, and you can play all of the pool you want in your spare time.
